Particles of dirt/sand/dust in your pocket can be MANY, MANY times more abrasive than keys, pens, knife, etc. It doesn't matter what freaking phone you have- even if it's made from honest to God Gorilla Glass on all four sides- it will frakking scratch. What do you expect? An impervious phone? Slap a protector on the screen and move on.

Calling Apple liars because it scratched is just stupid. If you don't want it damaged- frakking protect it! Same with dropping the damn thing- it DOESN'T matter what phone you have- IT'LL BREAK EVENTUALLY. Why do people always act surprised?

If you are smart, go to your basement, turn it into a lab, and create transparent adamantium. Voila- problem solved.

I think people are suprised because their 3G screens did not scratch as easily as the ip4 with the same usage pattern. It surprised and disappointed me.

I am at least glad to hear it is not just happening to me. It doesn't bother me that it scratched, I mean it is a phone but then don't go around telling me that it is more scratch resistant than ever because it is not better than my 3G.

Can't you use a scratch remove to get rid of light scratches on the glass?

I wouldn't do that. Scratch remover is abrasive. Using that on the scratch would remove the coating making it look very weird. I guess it would work if u remove the whole coating from the screen.

Apple say

Engineered Glass

All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass — the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It’s also recyclable.

Remind me to never ride in a helicopter

had my iPhone 4 for 1 week, pulled it out of jacket pocket late afternoon on sunday and 1 inch scratch on the face. very disappointed and there was nothing in the pocket. Dunno how it happened. I've had every single iPhone before and had no problems without any screen protectors. sigh...

My glass didn't scratch very easily, but my camera lens did. It was about 30% covered in scratches while the back of the phone was pretty clean. I took it back to the Apple Store in hopes that they could just clean/fix/replace the camera lens. They gave me the run around and eventually just replaced my phone.

Keep an eye on your camera lens - I think it's plastic not the magical helicopter glass like the rest of the phone.

You got them to replace it for you??? Ive had my Iphone 4 in a griffin case since day one and noticed scratches on the camera lens. Ive been considering going in and complaining but figured they would turn me away. Any tips?

Is this a joke? Nah seriously, please tell me your kidding! You put keys with your iPhone and you expect a scratch not to emerge? The iPhone 4 is scratch resistant not scratch proof..jesus christ.

This is what people keep mixing up. Most of you act like it is never supposed to get scratches, again it is scratch resistant not scratch proof. I keep mine in my front right pocket all alone.

bullocks. People are shocked because they've treated the 3 previous iPhones in the same manner and had no such problems. This thing, which Apple made a big freaking deal out of being stronger and less prone to scratching, is scratching easier for these people. No one is saying it's impossible to scratch.

Thats right, i use to sit the 3G, 3GS on the face when I put it down cause I know the glass was more resistant to scratches than the plastic back. Never had any scratches on any of the last 3 phones.

The scratch I got on the iPhone 4 seems to be from the lamented plastic. Its just annoying..

I am so pissed! My iPhone 4 has scratches all over the front and back also and I just can't figure out why?? All I keep in my pocket is a handful of rocks and a few razor blades and that's it! None of my other phones were scratched like this one!

Lol. I know its hard to believe everything a stranger says, especially with all the jealous Android fanboys out there corrupting things, but I swear that there is no reason why my lens should be scratched like that. I keep my phone in my purse by itself in the front pocket. I have had it in a freaking wallet case since day one. never dropped it (until this past weekend, when it slid out of my wallet case onto the floor of walgreens, and now the back is all scratched up). But the camera lense scratches I noticed over a week ago, and hadnt dropped the phone at all yet.

I had ordered a bodyguardz and it came in the mail yesterday, a little late for me now that my back and my lens is scratched up. Im going to take it to Apple today and see if I can exchange it. I know the back was my fault, but the camera lens thing is unacceptable.

Seems like a lot of people put their phones in their left front pocket. I'm gonna have to change it up now and then to keep the pickpockets guessing :)

I used to keep my phone in my right pocket when i had the invisishield on, i recently took it off and started to put the phone in my left pocket. I think its because the right pockets always have the small pocket above which has two metal tabs sticking out.

I've had my iPhone 4 for over a week, and I'm rocking it naked. I have not one scratch on the front or back of the phone. When it's not in use and I'm out, it's in my jeans/shorts pocket (with nothing else in that pocket).

Mine has a scratch on the screen already - don't have a screen protector yet b/c I haven't been able to find a power support one yet in stores.

I have a feeling their was something on my screen when I went to unlock it. Because its right where I swipe to unlock.

I only notice it if I look right at it .. or tilt the screen.

That's good, but be careful. Mine was scratch free a week later too, it's been over a month now and that is when the scratches started.

If I could only apply a PS screen protector to meet my standards of OCD. I tried twice and each time I had a teeny bubble which as the day developed irritated me more and more. I lifted it up with tape, applied tape, pressed down on the bubble etc etc but to no avail.

I bit the bullet and went to exchange my iphone 4 just now on my lunch break, due to the fact that the camera lens is scratched up even though my phone has been in case since day one. I showed the guy my receipt showing the case purchase and the phone purchase at the same time, also I fibbed a little bit and said that the phone was dropping calls even with lots of bars. Great news, he exchanged it for me. AND it's still on 4.0.1, i was afraid it would be on 4.0.2. I am a very happy Apple owner

I had the 3G without a scratch on the glass (no protector) for the last year of my using it. Now I am bare front with the iPhone 4 and somewhat concerned. I assume that this is essentially the same glass with oleophobic coating as the 3GS.

Has anybody here had a 3GS without a screen protector and not had any scratches on the glass after say 6-12 months of usage?

I cant answer your question directly, as I always use screen protectors, but Ive noticed from my own experience and from reading online forums that the most scratch-prone parts are the back glass and the camera lens. If you want to leave the front naked, I would say at least get a back screen protector. It wont protect your camera lens though, obviously...

Stop being careless with your electronics and you won't have to worry about scratches. Problem solved.

I went to the apple store, purchased my phone, never put it in my pocket, came home, layed it down on a brand spankin new Ray Ban Microfiber cloth, came back the next morning and there was a nick in the face. In a world where simple care was the key for keeping things in good condition, nothing in my life makes sense any more.

Nothing enters my room ever, as the door is shut both when I am out and inside it. No cats, no parents, nothing. :(
