Hmm... I was talking on my brand new 4s this morning, got to work and went to check my phone and there's a hairline crack from the ear speaker opening to the left side of my phone. Did not drop it, did not bump it. Simply carried it in the office, laid it (gently) on my desk, got a drink, picked it up, crack! It's in a case, never been dropped before and is BRAND NEW! I do not understand... I have dropped an iphone 4 before, and it shattered, this is not a shatter, just a crack. One crack, but enough to make me cry.

I just wanted to add this, in case this happened to anyone else. Just like the OP, my iphone 4s screen cracked, a single hairline crack across the top. I did not drop it, bump it, or anything that would cause it to crack. Picked it up off my desk and it had a crack that wasn't there 10 minutes prior! I went to the Apple Store last night, seen the genius bar and guess what? IT'S COVERED UNDER WARRANTY! He said that it doesn't happen often but they do see it. It's caused by faulty glass, just a little imperfection in the glass can cause this. When I went in to check in, the guy told me it wouldn't be covered, because it's considered accidental damage, blah blah blah. I told him I wanted to talk to them anyway, so I did. Turns out he had no idea what he was talking about. I'm sure glad I didn't listen to him. They replaced my phone free of charge and now I have a perfect iPhone 4s again :) So, to all those believing ghosts and aliens targeted the OP, turns out that his phone ACTUALLY DID BREAK ITSELF!

I know this sounds odd but I literally woke up this morning and saw this:

I was using the phone last night and it was pristine, put it in my bedside table, woke up this morning, picked up the phone, saw the crack. It's had the bumper on it since day 1.

I already setup a swap at the Apple store but I just wanted to post here, this stuff is fragile! Be careful, glass is glass apparently, no matter what Apple says.

Doesn't sound odd at all. I woke up one morning and my iphone 4 screen had two huge cracks across it. I then noticed the back was coming away. Weird. It was fine the night before.

Took it to the apple store today (it was within warranty time) and the battery had 'expanded' it was huge! They didn't tell me why or how it would happen, just immediately replaced it with a new one.

Ok just got back from Apple store and they are going to swap it out, although they don't have any 32gb in stock so they will order me a new one. They were very nice and at first said that they were really "doing me a pretty big favor here" because it was obviously user error, but "because they are so new...." etc.

I started to get a little frustrated and just tried to calmly explain that I didn't do anything and then also pointed out an area where it looked like the glass popped off the back, AND you couldn't feel anything rubbing your finger across it, AND it's now brown/yellow where the crack is, like it's burnt or something.

Then she took the phone back to another genius who said "single hairline cracks are always covered under warranty as long as there are no spiderweb type cracks where it was obviously hit with something" this made me feel better. However they still can't tell me why this happened or how to keep it from happening other than to baby it even more than I have been. A little concerned about having a phone that's so fragile. I've always kind of babied my electronics and trust me I'm a web dork, there is no running, jumping, exercise of any sort going on unfortunately. So if I can crack one of these things, get ready, there will be a flood of these pretty soon.
Replying after two years, but alright.

This sounds familiar to me. In my case I dropped my iPhone in its first week, and it was an awful drop. I dropped in on a concrete floor and it slid about a meter face down. Truly horrendous. However, I had only one single crack (diagonally across the entire screen), and it was covered under warranty . I was extremely lucky.
