... The only real disappointment is the lack of Verizon, or even T-Mobile. Otherwise, iOS4 is still better than Android, even 2.2 (barring a couple features like wifi hotspot and tethering).

You CAN tether with the new iPhone (I believe), just not on the unlimited data plan. It is an AT&T thing, NOT an Apple thing.

For the VZ folks out there...

For whatever it's worth, I did notice that the mockups on apple.com don't specify a carrier (i.e. 'AT&T') in the upper left-hand corner the way they did in the past. If they didn't intend on adding a carrier in the near term, you'd expect the AT&T to still be showing.

(scroll to the bottom pictures)

if apple DO open up the iphone 4 to multiple carriers, they wont make a big announcement of it. despite everyones hatred over them, they won't go "and another thing! we're getting rid of AT&T!!" ... it's bad business.

the first you'll hear about it is through verizon, or whoever your carriers are over there...

I may end up getting this. I'm currently on a family plan with AT&T and not sure how much the iPhone will cost though. (subsidized or full price?)

...looks to be a very usable phone!

Except for the AT&T-only problem, that is.

I was in the midwest this weekend for a college reunion. We drove to a nearby town to see something from our past.

On the way, we noticed the 300' to 500' high cell phone towers scattered about.

A friend (non-techy Iphone user - a psychologist from Chicago) said - "wow, it must be very expensive for AT&T to put up those towers to determine the worst possible moment to drop your calls".

"Nice phone on sucky network" == "sucky phone".

My Verizon 3G phone and laptop with internal Verizon 3G worked fine.

We can agree that Flash sucks. But what sucks worse is not having the CHOICE to view a video using Flash. One phone lets you enable and disable Flash at will so that you're never forced to run to a real computer to view something, whereas the other device gives you no option whatsoever. I'll take choice over no choice every day of the week.

You have to understand that iPhone has a higher standard than its competitors. They don't like to crap on their OS. You can't blame them for that.

It looks pretty decent but the "facetime" is weak. Here in Japan regular "dumb phones" can do video chat over the cellular/3g network with any person/any carrier as long as their phone supports it.

Funny story. I was in Fuji and my female friend was back in Okinawa and I wanted to try out the video chat on my phone so I called her up. She answers the phone just out the shower and sees me staring at her in her birthday suit. She drops the phone and runs to grab a towel. It was so funny, the look on her face when she saw me looking back at her.

we must never compare any network to Japans cellular network  lol its not even fair. Awesome story btw, coulda been the new ad for FaceTalk if Steve jobs wasnt against porn

Flash.

Proven to be buggy on phones and drastically slow browsers down browsing experience.
Video chat between the phone and computers or other phones.

I might give you this one.

Video chat over 3G or 4G or Wifi.
Gives a lovely stuttering picture.

A real OS with an even better one a few months away.
It's closed...but as far as an OS goes...it's good...damn good.

No iAds to be found anywhere.
Useless point...Ads exist on other phones...and they're crappy. Ads WILL be on phones..iAds allows a better ad experience...but i don't believe developers are forced to use iAds. not forced to use them

No moronic Apple restrictions on Apps.
Honestly..having used some of the god awful aps on other phones..I don't complain...but i will give you this one.

Free tethering.
Blame ATT no Apple.

Free wifi hot spot options via apps.
Kinda cool...but drains battery life like nothing else...and why do I want other people using my bandwidth? Use their own. Potential security issues here too

I can go on and on, but it would make your fanboy head explode.

Anyways, you calling other people fanboys but you certainly seem to be a fanboy just not of the Apple phone.

Try to be a little objective. The Evo has some definite positives but by no means is it an iPhone killer...but hey...I could be wrong..we'll have to who sells more. My money's on Apple.

Many put the blame solely on ATT, but its the phone. My mother-in-law has ATT and in spots where my iphone did nothing but drop calls, hers maintained service just fine. I love the new design of the iPhone. Love it. But as I said, it's first and foremost a phone. And as phones go, it's simply dreadful.

I think it definitely has a lot to do with the network. I've had an iPhone 3G in Australia for about a year and a half now (on Telstra) and I've never had a dropped call...

iPhone 4G. This Changes, uhhh, Everything? Ok, ok, Maybe something.

As with all Apple products, it's very nice. A worthy update, an aesthetic success. I don't agree with their claim that it changes everything (if any phone can claim to change everything today, its the HTC Evo 4G), and I'm really glad they didn't claim it to be 'magical' or 'supernatural' or 'shamanistic'.

This phone isn't going to get a second glance from me unless they open up the carriers. If AT&T still has their grip on by the end of the month, I will be happy to go HTC for the phone, iPad for the other stuff and calling it a day.

I have a few friends in Japan who said that the original iPhone would never sell over there as it lacked features. Japan is so far ahead with features, the cheapest phones are often crammed with things that most people will never use, often because they simply can't work out how and can't find them. Phones often have TV tuners built in and do all sorts of things that we don't get on phones in the west.
I've been in Japan for some time now and frankly their phones are far from good. I would call them feature-phones rather than smartphones. The "features" that the iPhone was missing were emoji (emoticons), TV and wallet-phone. And yes, I have japanese friends who didn't buy the iphone just because of the emoticons (it is really that important fro some of them).
Fast forward a few years and not only is the iPhone one of the most popular phones in Japan but the iPad is also a massive hit, even though on paper they should hate it as it just doesn't have enough features and buttons.
They have enough features, if you put aside the TV and wallet-phone, the iPhone just kills the phones here.
It looks like people realise its not all about spec sheets and numbers, the most memory and the biggest screen, the most buttons and the biggest manual. Its actually about the user experience and how well it works.
Exactly. And japanese people are pretty good at understanding this :)

Engadget has a nice chart comparing phones:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-vs-the-smartphone-elite-evo-4g-n8-pre-plus-and-hd2/

In summary, the iPhone does some things better than the Evo. The Evo does some things better than the iPhone. Android does a couple things better than iPhone OS and vice versa (though that's LARGELY subjective; don't know the meaning of the word? Look it up).

The iPhone is on AT&T. This may or may not work for you. It does NOT for me. The Evo is on Sprint. Even worse for me, but that varies for everyone.

The Evo does NOT kill the iPhone or vice versa, nor does Android kill iOS4 (or even 3.1.3, I would say).

Anyone who says so is clinically retarded, and has a hard time discerning the definition of "opinion" and subjectivity in general.

I prefer iOS because I think they got rudimentary things I use everyday, such as virtual keyboard, cut and paste, web browsing far more "right" than Android still has managed, even as of 2.2 (yes, that includes the myriad of 3rd party keyboards for Android).

iOS4 does multitasking in a way that should be far less annoying than what I've experienced with Android, both stock and with various hacked firmware.

So am I buying an iPhone? No. I can't reliably use AT&T for work. It just doesn't have the reliable coverage, so I have no choice but to stick with Android. Luckily there is Android though, because it's still very capable, and is certainly better than the drivel from Blackberry and WinMo.

You are correct; however Android 2.2 has wifi tethering, meaning basically a portable 3G wifi router in your phone. So with my Android phone, I can run my phone, iPod touch, iPad, and MacBook all through the phone, at no additional cost.

The iPhone cannot serve as a wifi access point without going through the jailbreak process, and the tethering isn't free.

Dude, you sound like you have an IQ in triple digits.

Cut it out. You don't belong here. :D

I just get annoyed with the people who think the more they type their opinion of "XYZ is far superior, you sheep are crazy" the more people will listen to them. They're the equivalent of the people in a debate who simply talk louder in an attempt to prove their point. It's tiring.

Sadly, since this place lacks moderation, it's likely to continue that way.

I love when I'm called an Apple fanboy in one thread, then in another an Android fanboy, Windows fanboy, etc. It seems to be socially unacceptable here to actually see the merits and drawbacks of the various platforms.

Though I'll admit it's tough for me to see any positives in Windows Mobile. :D

I was surprised to see in that chart that while the Evo has a larger screen, it has a lower screen resolution. And of course a worse pixel density. The Evo screen must look fuzzy compared to the iPhone 4.

Evo?

What's this Evo thing? Never heard of it until today.

Oh and I'm getting the white one...

The cellular networks here in the USA are behind many countries of the world. But, in their defense ... at least to a small degree ... the USA has 4 individual states that are bigger than Japan (Alaska 656000 sq mi, Texas 268000, California 163000, Montana 147000, Japan 145000), and the country as a whole (over 3.5 million sq miles) is about 25 times the size of Japan. Japan has a whole lot less to upgrade every time there is a new technology.

I never said they were smartphones. Some of what you said is true but the only point I wanted to make was that Japanese "dumb phones" have been doing video chat across networks and phones for years all while not requiring you to use wifi.

I am just saying that Apple's implementation of video chat is weak. Only to other iphone 4 users, and only on wifi. That is extremely weak for a phone that is supposed to be all that and a bag of chips.
