iPhone 4 Hands-On Reviews and First Impressions

Apple disappoints once again.

No 64GB option.
No price drop.
Wifi only and iPhone to iPhone only video chat.
Virtually identical to the Gizmodo leak that 1000s of people here hated.

A good phone but outclassed by the Evo 4G in almost every way. Screen does seem impressive though,

...........I want to say a lot. But I respect your opinion.

I'm sorry, but that comment is wrong in so many ways. Sounds like someone who looks at checklists instead of real world performance. As Steve said, they key is the hardware and software working together in ways that make it work great. Evo will never match up for that very reason.

Oh the geeks will love Evo, but they are willing to put up with a lack of fit and finish in order to get the full checklist experience. For the other 90% of the world, the iPhne will continue to dominate.

But I give you credit for complimenting the screen. You aren't just trolling. But try to look beyond geek thinking. Steve is playing to the real world.

Just to give an idea I'm posting from a Sprint store Evo and I can read the forum in freaking portrait mode with no pinching. Small of course but I can. Pretty awesome and really makes me wish Apple had increased the size.

You're aware that Apple makes more than really bad phones, right? Some of us like their computers.

you know this whole "touch screen phone/ android htc" kicked off mainly cause the iPhone was a sucsses granted there were touch screen phones but they were pretty much crap compared to what you say is a "bad phone"

Here we go, 199-299 mark is a deal. Stop complaining, don't get it. Obviously we got something called, choice. 64GB. How many more people would use 64 rather than 32 realistically. Apple has went over all these things prior to release of there final production of the iPhone 4. Larger screen? This is a phone. What else needs to be said, as others have said though 3.7 would be the biggest to be comfortable without going overboard. I enjoy my screen now, I have a 3GS. With the new resolution, I will be looking at that than my beautiful woman......for the time being.

I feel apple did a great job, props. To those who complain, get the evo. Please do. Hah

We can agree that Flash sucks. But what sucks worse is not having the CHOICE to view a video using Flash. One phone lets you enable and disable Flash at will so that you're never forced to run to a real computer to view something, whereas the other device gives you no option whatsoever. I'll take choice over no choice every day of the week.

Despite what anyone else has to say about it -- you do have a choice. You choose a different phone because it has something that this phone does not provide. If you don't like Apple's design choices, or HTC's for that matter, you choose something else.

There is no controversy here -- this is the way it's supposed to work.

again, i'd think someone would list one of these ways....

iphone gots better screen, better video

evo gots... adhoc wifi, and kickstand.

what else is outclassing?

(i do like the wifi hotspot thing. but ok, that's one thing. what else?)

If they offered 64GB you would've complained about no option for 128GB

If they dropped the price you would've complained it wasn't low enough

They explained why the video chat is currently wifi only, did you miss that or did you just wanna complain anyway?

Did you really expect them to do "iPhone to any phone" chat or did you wanna just complain?

You do know the Gizmodo leak was real right or did you wanna just complain? :p

You lost me with that one. Way overstated. It exposes some bias beyond the quality of the phone. I am still using the original edge phone and it is still better than most of the phones on the market. Now that android phones are on the market and people can make other choices, Apple has decided to raise the bar a little. I have only used a droid for a few minutes whenever my friends have one around, and I can say I prefer the iPhone interface. However, I am not so...well, I have no word for haters other than hater, but sufice it to say I have no desire to say that droid phones are bad or really bad. My friends all seem to be happy with the performance of their droid phones. All of the iPhone users I know or meet love their iPhones. Get over the platform wars. They have been over for years. Everyone is a winner when they are happy with their devices, and everyone is a loser when they are unhappy with someone elses.

The price did drop - before the keynote, you had to pay $299 for a 16 gig model. Now you can pay $199 for a 16, or even $99 for a 16 gig 3GS.

Remember, it's not all about price - the price may not change, but you usually get extras for what you're paying.

You gotta realize that after every keynote there seem to be 300 posters who whine and moan about some stupid lil thing but once the product is out people will try it and buy it and everything goes back to being peacfull till next keynote.:D

Show me an iphone that runs the infinitely superior Android OS. Show me an iphone with 2 built in FREE turn by turn navigation options. I could go on and on.

oh, how i live "INFINITELY"!!!!

i have no idea what it means... but i love to use it, just the same. sounds so smart!

"I could go on and on." .... but i won't, because i'm actually at the end of my list. if i just say this, it sounds like i have a lot of actual evidence... of which i have absolutely none.

The IPHONE is INFINITELY superior to android, and i could list an infinite list of thousands of reasons... but i won't.

Oh dear or dear Apple...
- THE WHITE IS NOT THE RIGHT KIND OF SHADE FOR MY LIKINGS
- A 'MOBILE' PHONE? NOW I'VE HEARD EVERYTHING
- THIS IS CLEARLY A FAKE; THE PHOTO OF FRUIT ON THE BACK SUGGESTS IT CAME FROM A GROCERY
- HD VIDEO IS OLD TECH.

I'm not going to comment on the first parts of your post, primarily because I'm not sure what you are trying to say. However, I do want to know why HD Video is old tech. What is the new? Also, please stop screaming.

iPhone is not a phone

Pssst, first and foremost its a phone.

Not for me and I suspect not for most iPhone users if you use time spent on the activity as the metric. I further suspect that AT&T's recent data plan changes indicate phones (specifically smartphones) are used more for non-talk than talk.

As someone wisely observed, the iPhone is a "phone" only because of an accident of history. We happened to carry phones around so Apple used a phone as a starting point for its device. We use these "phones" for talking as much as we use our "computers" for computing.

Flash. Video chat between the phone and computers or other phones. Video chat over 3G or 4G or Wifi. A real OS with an even better one a few months away. No iAds to be found anywhere. No moronic Apple restrictions on Apps. Free tethering. Free wifi hot spot options via apps. I can go on and on, but it would make your fanboy head explode.

LOL. "i could go on and on" ... but since i don't have any more items, that would just be a big waste of time.

no ads on android apps? really? no app has ads? and somehow this ecosystem will... thrive? REALLY?

i do like the hotspot. but that's ONE thing.

we have better screen and real HD video recording / editing.

so that trumps your hotspot, or at least equals it.

now... WHAT ELSE IS THERE?

lots of people making all this noise about all these ways the others are better... and then DON'T LIST EXAMPLES. c'mon, how can we believe "there are, trust me"?

"A real OS with an even better one a few months away"

i mean, come on dude... that's just pathetic. you're not even trying. just ridiculous nonsense this, for many reasons.

Believe it or not, the EVO does have advantages over the iPhone 4. I won't bore you with all the details....

COME ON!

this is RIDICULOUS.

PLEASE BORE US. i DARE you.

or, i just have to join in

"the iphone is the greatest phone that shall ever exist, for many concrete, technological reasons... which i won't bother listing. ever. wouldn't want to bore you. by talking about this highly relevant and interesting topic."

you evo people really suck it... keeping all your superior technology secret from the rest of us. i really wish there was some way to actually get real information about it. oh well, impossible.

Here's why Android is infinitely superior. You don't like the stock keyboard on it. Fine. Neither do I. But guess what, I swapped it out for a great one (Swype). It's all about choices. I'd rather make my own choices rather than Apple deciding for me what I do and don't need. I'm mature enough to buy a phone and pay the monthly bills, so Im mature enough to decide how I want to use it.

So why do you care so much about the choices others are making? Some people have come to find that Apple and its engineers are great at what they do. Some of us use devices as endusers, and quite effectivly and happily I might add, so have little desire to change out hardware or sofware components just for the sake of doing so. My hat is off to all of the geeks out there that like to hack and rebuild. I, for one, am one of the end users out there that will be eternally grateful to Apple for building hardware and software that lets me focus on content creation and/or use rather than tweeking my system constantly as a source of joy(geeks) or as a necessity to just try to get some work done. I offer an example of when I first started into non-linear editing using a radius card and adobe premier. What a nightmare until Apple delivered G4 towers and FCP. At that point I simply began to focus on what I was creating and not what I was creating it on.

Shocked and stunned that in 2010, we're still made to choose between black and white. Why not a half black/half white Obama iPhone?

Okay, I'm kidding :D

Great post. I'm an editor also, so I hear ya.

ah - yes - It looks different and I thought it might be a button to keep the rotation from happening when you are looking at the screen and turn sideways to lay on your side to view. Is there another way to keep the screen from rotating - software option?

It's a software option in iOS 4, per some of the other blogs.

The quality and pixel density of iPhone 4 screen is impressive, no question about that. However, 3.5" screen is too small by today's premier smartphone standards.

Why? Who says a bigger phone is a better phone? Will a 5" smartphone render the EVO irrelevant? Which will in turn be rendered irrelevant by a 6" smartphone? Followed by the 7-incher? What, exactly, defines the "premier" smartphone screen size? If the iPad gets calling functionality, will that make it the greatest smartphone ever??? Of course not.

The iPhone is the perfect size for my pocket. I don't want a bigger phone. Many people don't want a bigger phone. The EVO is more hip-side PDA than pocketable device in my opinion.

How about I say the EVO screen is too low-res by today's premier smartphone standards?

Seriously, Apple. Would it have been to much to include a MicroSD card slot and a HDMI output on this phone?

I've owned both the 3g and 3gs and I will buy the next gen iPhone but I just don't understand why Apple won't include some of the features that other phones do.
