This is the first time you've posted in this thread, I dont know why you are so insulted by my comments. You are right, this is my opinion and i'm free to give it.

I trust CR reviews as do millions of others. Even that said, I bought an iPhone4 when CR said not to, and CR was dead on in their review in my opinion. You can love your iPhone 4, thats fine. I did at first too, then over time it has just fallen apart.
No it wasn't the over zealous mods strike again. I actually posted right above your first post but I quoted another that had their post removed so can only assume mine was deleted because their post was. Not insulted by your post as your opinion really doesn't matter to me (no offense) but you threw out a lot of generalizations about a product millions had no issue with.

Sounds like whatever phone or product you own is ever going to fail you will be ready to call it quits.

Hope your GF never screws up but she might leave you her wonder free phone as a consolation prize.

Going to keep your post as a Kobayashi Maru for customer service.

Good luck with your new Android and the 6 week repair window when it Breaks and full cost out of warranty replacements

ignorance is bliss.

Have a little think about how much apple care costs,

then have a little look though all the threads about applecare, not many are +ve, it's good, but often the consumer still has to pay up.

The fact that your computer is 6 years old and is just now having problems is a testament to how well built Apple computers are. 6 years is a long time, especially for technology. Saying that Apple's quality control is going down based on an iPhone 4's faulty home button and your 6 year old computer breaking is just incorrect. The iPhone 4 was known to have a faulty home button, but was fixed with the 4S.

ESPECIALLY for a computer...

Every time someone on this board doesn't speak of their iPhone as its the greatest piece of electronics to ever exist, they are attacked by the fan-boys who can't see the forest through the trees.

You fan-boys don't like what he has to say but there is a lot of truth in it. Apple's quality has suffered lately. Also the iPhone 4 while breaking sales records, also sucked. And I say that as a guy who has one and uses it everyday. From antenna gate to the home button its hasnt lasted very well, and it shouldn't be asking too much to have a phone which costs $500-600 unsubsidized last 2 years. It says a lot when consumer reports doesn't recommend it.

I'm eagerly waiting iPhone 5, but anyone considering buying a new phone right now should steer clear of iPhone 4.

LOL... Consumer Reports is the biggest load of crap ever... CNET is much more reliable and gives much better suggestions.

I worked at Circuit City then to Best Buy during college for a total for 4 years selling Home Theater and Computers. I LOVED it when people brought those magazines into my department. Their choices as the "best picture" and the "best value" were all too classic... Meaning their choices were AWFUL.

One year, they picked a TV as the best picture/value... It sat right next to several TV's that BLEW it out of the water. I would bet that 3 or 4 times out of 5... I could get the customer to put that magazine down and listen to me instead.

During my 4 years in electronics sales, never once did I see CR pick a model that actually deserved to be the highest rated.

Go to CNET, they are much better IMO. At the very minimum, they are much better at recommending televisions that people should actually be considering.

No attack on you, just wanted to get the point across that CR sucks... CNET is better.

Fanboy? Well... i have 2 macbook pros, 1 iMac, 2 iphones, 1 ipad, 1 appletv, and a pile of other iPods laying around the house. If I'm a fanboy of anything, its of apple products. But this fanboy was disappointed with the iPhone 4. My opinion doesn't mean you can't love your apple products any less.

I can see the disappointments with the iPhone 4 due to antenna-gate and the home button.

However... My iPhone 4 was from launch day on AT&T, its home button works fine still. To mean, that is just bad luck. None of my friends had that problem either, so I had never heard about home button issues until I started reading peoples posts on here.

No, that really isn't what you wrote in your original post. What you wrote was more like: the iPhone 4 sucks, no matter how many millions actually have been brainwashed to think they like it, and you people that can't see that are idiots, and the OP was right to come here and whine about dropping it.

My point, and I think most of the other posts were not mindless fanboy reactions but more like, "great, really don't care," or if they did disagree made points why they disagreed with OP. But there really isn't much ad hominen attacks going on as you suggest, yet you seek to smear everyone that posted a response.

I never in my post called anyone an idiot. I never said the OP was right to come here and whine. You can spin my words 6 ways to Sunday, but those aren't my words. Whats really going on is you didn't agree with my opinion on the iPhone 4, so you now feel hurt that someone couldn't possibly give a glowing review of your phone. Sorry bud, it was a disappointing phone in my experience. Your attacks of me aren't going to change my opinion, so move on. You like your phone thats fine. Continue loving it.

As for the post, I thought most of the responses before I came in were attacks and uncalled for. Should he have posted it? I don't know, who cares? Don't like it, don't read it. The OP wasn't a flame at anything so I dont know where the heartburn comes from.

Millions had no issues with the antenna? Didn't Apple mail everyone who bought the phone a free case so they could MAKE CALLS?

Everyone's experience with their phone is going to be different. Yours was good, mine was good at first and is getting worse by the day. Not everyone is going to have the same experience, thats what many forget on this board before they get flamed for not being a complete PATT apple fanatic.

As for CR, my experience has been dead on with their reviews. I use CR, CNET, magazines, basically anything I can get my hands on. My experience is never trust the guys at the electronics stores cause they screw with the picture settings on tvs every way possible. Turn the brightness all the way up on one thats expensive, then turn it down on one thats cheap to get a foolish customer to consider the more expensive model. You probably have a different experience from your side of the house. But thats mine.

- Apple want circa £150 to replace
- Apple will give me nothing towards an upgrade (not surprised)
- If I buy iPhone 5 I'll need new dock etc in any case (my own fault as don't like adapters etc)

1 - I get why your upset, I got burned by HP... but they didn't offer me anything at all. So the fact that Apple will only charge you 150 Euro to replace your phone is a darn good deal. Show me a BB or an Android phone where this would be possible...

2 - There are plenty of people that should get a discount before you, or even myself. What BB, Windows Phone, or Android manufacturer is going to give you a discount because you have purchased their products in the past? My dad has a decent Samsung Laptop and several Samsung TV's, and the Samsung Galaxy S... Should/Will he get a discount on the GS3? No

3 - How many docks do you have? I should be upset about it... But I am not, I get why they updated it... It needed to happen.

I have a Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Air ($600), 3 extra chargers, a car charger, an iPod/iPhone connector in my car from factory. My roommate has two iHomes that we both use (one in the kitchen and one in our office).

But I don't care. At least the adapter is only $10... To be honest, I expected it to be $15 or $20.... I just hope it is small and sleek... And comes in Black (white wouldn't look good on the Zeppelin Air cuz the whole thing is black)

Millions had no issues with the antenna? Didn't Apple mail everyone who bought the phone a free case so they could MAKE CALLS?

Antenna-Gate is well known to most people... My questions for you...

Did it stop people from buying the iPhone 4?

Would any other manufacturer have sent everyone a free case?

Answers: No, and Probably Not

I'm sorry you have had so many problems with your iphone.

Its really strange because I have tried to use Android phones, multiple ones, and every one of them did what you are having problems with. But every iPhone i've had has been perfect. Sometimes It seems like the luck of the draw with these:rolleyes:

Couple things on this statement... This depends on where you go... Places where they get paid commission, it could happen.

When I was at Circuit City or Best Buy, even we messed with the settings like that... We would have been fired for doing that. I personally had a Sharp Sales Rep kicked out of my store for doing this to a Samsung TV that was next to one of the more expensive Sharp TV's at my store.

Also, from time to time customers do that to the TV's was well, trying to play with the picture like they would at home but they forget to put the settings back (A sales rep may make this mistake too, sometimes customers would ask me to turn the brightness up or down, and I may forget to put it back to normal settings), or when they try to put them back.. they fail.

And finally, Most TV's are put in a "Store Demo Mode" or "Store Use" when they are put on display. This caused the TV to reset the Display Settings to Factory Settings every 15 minutes or so (in case someone is playing with the settings and forgets to put them back)

This is ALL too true. My first laptop was an HP... I got it serviced twice in the first year (each time it took a month for them to return my computer)... Then, 1 month or so out of warranty, one of original issues put the computer out of commission again. They wanted $500 and another month to fix it. I bought my first MBP instead, It was a Great decision.

And Luxury/Cost/Quality doesn't let you escape these issues. My friend gets spoiled by his dad. When he was 21, his dad bought him a new $80,000 2009 BMW 5 Series... It had broke down at least 7 or 8 times in three years. My car is a 2009 Maxima SV Premium... Mine hasn't had a single problem in three years.

Its all luck of the draw sometimes... Bad Luck of the draw that is...

That sucks man, I hope you find the phone/computer that can make you happy.

I've played with the android phones my family owns, and even the Xone (which I'm lead to believe is one of the big boys on the block right now) feels cheap in the hand. IMO. I used to use the original Moto Razr. Then I bought a i3g. Call me spoiled, or blind if you want, but I've never been dissapointed in a cell phone in my life. :D

Also; call us fan boys if you'd like, but I'd rather that than a troll. Because when you remove a troll from their computer, their just a cowardly jerk.

Well that was surprising

Thanks to all of the responders. Think I should clear up one little point, I completely agree with Apple giving nothing towards an iPhone 5, that's why I wasn't surprised. Also computer is old but not used much however I was happy to replace anyway.

Thanks to person who mentioned the assist function, tried that and helps a lot so many thanks, gonna take it to a man I found in Edinburgh who should be able to fix.

To those saying I'm this and that, making a meal out of nothing and my favourite 'looking for pity' - you guys crack me up and I'm laughing with you all so many thanks for cheering me up. It is nice to know that you can be sledged by a complete stranger for having a view on something and posting it in an appropriate forum.

Upshot is I'll most likely upgrade to iPhone 5 and take risk with worsening QC, over in States soon so will pick up macbook in place of iMac.

Thanks again to one and all, everyone helped in their own way.

I never attached you. Or at least didn't mean to. And I certainly didnt call you out on your post.

I responded to your concerns with my opinions/thoughts. You can take whatever you would prefer from them. And if that was your original point about the discount thing, then yes, people mistook took it, cuz I know I did. I read it as you expected them to do so.

And do remember the fight that Apple put up before they did that? I seem to recall a certain Steve Jobs saying and I qoute "You are using it wrong."

They folded to the consumers, they screwed up, tried to blame us, and in the end didn't want to hurt their profit line and gave in.

I got the iPhone 4 right when it came out, and I still use it everyday and love it. I will admit my home button does have issues, and sometimes it doesn't want to work, but if I just slap the back of the phone, it works like a charm. The phone is over two years old, what do you expect? I tried both the HTC One X, GSM Galaxy Nexus, and the GSIII; but I kept coming back to the iPhone. This is what I found on android. Sure, the newest Android handsets have more functionality than the iPhone. They have more customizability and openness; but guess what? I found when I had those Android phones that I didn't pick them up and use them nearly as much as I did my iPhone everyday. My Android phones just became a device for calling, texting, email, maps, and sometimes google music. Sure, I tried a ton of different apps, but after awhile I just found them ugly and unintuitive. Bottom line was, they were not ENJOYABLE to use. They didn't make me want to pick up my phone to check my RSS feed. Instead I just checked it on my MBP because Reeder has a more enjoyable design and layout. As soon as I went back to my iPhone 4 I realized that as both platforms get the same apps, it really comes down to design choices and how the app looks and feels; and on iOS they almost always look and feel better. That makes it more of a joy to pick up your phone and use it as a mini computer. It's all those little things, that most people don't even realize, that make it better; and it's something that some people get, and others don't and never will. I am excited to upgrade to the new iPhone. Even if it is not a mind-blowing step up from the 4S, it will still be a huge step up from the 4.

The iPhone only lasts 14 months? Not 15? Not 13? But spot on at 14?

I think you have misunderstood, my iPhone only lasted 14 months, not every iPhone, I have no idea how long everyone's iPhones have lasted. I quoted 14 months as counting through the months I have had it came to 14, not 13, not 15 but exactly 14.

Indeed, and if you buy an Android phone from a good retailer they'll give you their own warranty anyway. I'm not sure what the US equivalent is, but here in the UK we have John Lewis who give you at least a two year warranty on small gadgets as standard (five years on bigger things like TVs and laptops) and if your **** breaks, you take it back and they give you a new one just like Apple. You can even exchange it for a different product of similar value, like I've done in the past.

The key is that they did give in.

Leave it to SJ to tell someone they are holding their phone wrong  :apple:

Did you get rid of it or something? Because the post you should be listening to is the one about EU warranty periods. 14<24

... However whilst on holiday my phone suffered the home button no longer working problem. Every time I needed to change application I had to shut off and restart, not good...

As a workaround, turn on Assistive Touch: Settings --> General --> Accessibility --> Physical&Motor --> AssistiveTouch = ON

You'll get a little white circle permanently onscreen. Tap that circle to get a popup menu with a soft home button.

The same trick can be used if your volume up/down or mute buttons or rotate/shake aren't working: Select "Device" on the popup.

Edit: I see JesalTV mentioned it already. Must've missed it when skipping through all the, ahem, constructive debate :)

So your 2-year old iPhone is worn out and your 6-year-old computer has issues,a nd in your mind this means Apple's QC has dropped the ball? Good luck out there, but I think you're in for a rude awakening.

My god knows how many years old Windows Mobile Motorola flip phone is still working fine, so is my Nokia 3310, and i have Fujitsu, Dell, Asus and Sony laptops that are still running ranging from a decade ago, to a REALLY old orange and black screen unbranded laptop (its a 286, thats how old it is) ALL still working ok today.

Apples QC in the same time has seen me with two failed time-capsules, several failed Macbook-Pros, the iPhone 3G and 3Gs crappy plastic backs that crack, Screen issues on practically every iOS device , Screen issues, ongoing, with the iMacs (dust getting between the LCD panel and backlight..

Apple go from design to release in such a short cycle they cannot possibly be testing the products well enough.

Just went and did that, very useful! Thanks :)

Point taken, BTW.

I'm in the UK too and I can second that, Argos is an other one with great extended warranties.

This is absurd. Apple offers the best warranty support and retail experience in the business bar none.

My first iPhone (the 3G circa 2008?) went to crap and was out of warranty. I was glad to pay the $150 or $199 whatever I got a nice new iPhone (actually got a 3GS upgrade)

Now since that fateful day I've spent the lousy $50 to $80 to have AppleCare. When my "4" had some issues, I walked out with a new phone - no cost - no questions asked, in very short order.

Cliff notes, buy the coverage, or man up and pay the (still very fair) out of warranty replacement/repair prices.
