I have been back and fourth, wanting to pull the trigger on the ip4 but i keep thinking that they will make a hardware change to the phone sooner or later...do you guys think they will make the change? i do not want to buy a phone and renew my plan only to have my phone be outdated and defected. please help!

stop listening to rumors and get the phone. if you're actually worried, then you're not in the least bit interested in truth, and get totally jazzed by saucy rumors spread by idiots (gizmodo).

I should imagine that apple can issue a fix by probably making the two parts non conductive. It would not be that hard to do if it is a possible solution.

There is no way that apple can stop the roll out of phones. If the did they would absolutely cripple their sales.

If AT&t has strong, consistent service in the area that you live then you probably won't have many call quality issues. However, if you live in a place (like NYC) where AT&T service has been sketchy from the start, you may wish to consider waiting.

The problems with the iPhone 4 are real and well documented by reputable testing companies and have been reported on by credible media outlets. They aren't just coming from techy geek blogs. I personally had an iPhone 4 that frequently dropped calls--more so than my 3G. I'm glad its working for other people however and I hope to return to the iPhone one day.

+1. I had many of the issues others have reported here and on the Apple site.

:D

The truth is that it's blown wildly out of proportion. Of course, some people have certain amount of dropped calls depending on the signal strength in the area, and there's nothing new about it. IMO, we wouldn't ever notice this in real life day-to-day usage, had we not been shown all the antennagate stuff. It's human nature to try and touch something when it's said "do not touch" - just to see what happens.;)

My husband and I have had our 4s for 3 weeks.

That is not the "truth."

Just because you got lucky and do not have any of the other issues (beyond just the connectivity one), it's narrow-minded to shut your eyes to all of the professional reviewers who have addressed these.

I see you just joined.

It's clear that many users are not having any of the many potential problems with this phone. Please give those of us who did have problems (without going out of our way to discover them) the same consideration. That we might be telling the truth. Maybe that's why so many reviewers did report on this, pressuring Jobs to finally address it in a press conference and a case giveaway. No small thing, that.

For those of you who have not experienced any problems (and you've had the phone a whole three weeks), read the Apple support boards and see how many other issues are reported.

I've had iPhones since the original and never had so many problems until the 4. I guess it is possible the lost tester phone pressured Apple to push the launch.

seems to be mixed feelings about this phone.
i really think its the ATT network and where you are making the calls.
i live in san francisco and let me tell you... in the heart of sf. financial district. i get dropped calls out of nowhere. it says i have reception and it will automatically drop the call and say call failed. this happeend 3 times yesturday while i was OUTSIDE. not even inside a building.. how weird right?
as far as the proximity issue i have yet experienced it.

Done. Gee, there are a lot. Ok, your turn. Please find out how many individuals are complaining about issues. Now check the research to establish how many people are having issues but not posting complaints. Then find out how many iP4's are in the wild. Then divide and give us a percentage. Please show your work.

The iPhone 4 is not flawless. But most people who have them are keeping them and loving them.

I sure would hope that "most people" (over 50%) of the 3 million sold are keeping them because Apple went to unheard of lengths by offering free cases to offset a stampede of returns.

LA Times today had a long article beginning with:

"By giving out free cases for its iPhone 4, Apple Inc. hoped to smooth over troubles with unhappy customers."

And ending with this quote from Jacket Plunkett of Plunkett Research to sum up: "This whole thing has been an immense embarrassment to Apple, and their biggest goal here is to try and make us all forget about this as quickly as possible so they don't have additional costs in terms of loss in brand image or market share."

I want Apple to fix the issues, I loved my 3GS and will try the 4 again when it's clear the 6-7 potential problems have been addressed. This launch has been head-shakingly bad. My guess is the majority of users don't get around to testing certain features in the first month. Some, maybe never.

re:

buy it!

I love mine- You're going to get a case for it no doubt-(or get a free one from apple). This solves the problem.

Now- I'm not haveing much problems at all with ATT personally, but quite honestly i don't use the "phone" part of my phone all that often. I get more out of the apps, txt messages and internet than i do with the rest.

But i can tell you this for sure- I did download the skype app- and called a friend of mine who is in the UK (I am in America) and the quality sounded better than calling my wife when im at work - only 3 miles away!

It is heavily rumored AND DIRECTLY IMPLIED that Apple will introduce slightly modified, but fixed models that donot suffer from antenna troubles

Wait a tic. How can you be serious? Rumors and "Directly Implied" (even in all caps!) cannot be your reason to believe they intend to revise/fix the hardware.

And where exactly was this implied? From what I remember Steve organized a press conference to outright say that the iphone is fine as-is and that they cannot change the "laws of physics". In fact, if I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure that he said that they will "continue to look into it", but that they already conducted heavy research and don't believe they could alter the hardware to fix the issue. And even during the Q&A when someone asked about the publication claiming a software update could fix the signal loss, they immediately shot it down. In fact, it was pretty explicit that all antennas by their very nature will have "antenna troubles"...so how could they produce a "fixed" model (which they've never done in between the main releases) without any antenna troubles when Steve's whole point of said event was to demonstrate that all phones' signal will suffer with human contact?

Now I know that they will continue to work on software updates to try to improve things, because that's what Apple does well. But "directly implied" is a long shot from what I saw and read from the transcript. Correct me if I'm wrong or you've read official statements elsewhere, but I think implying they'd have a hardware revision before iPhone 5 next summer was the LAST thing they'd want to convey. Not only would that piss off the 3 million owners that already had "defective" phones, but also cripple sales in the meantime, basically telling people not to buy until there's a hardware/software fix that they can't promise will happen soon, if at all.

Again, if you've heard different please direct me to such direct implications. But keep in mind, even if this is implied somewhere it still is just that--an implication, not a gaurantee. Honestly, I'd love to see this happen regardless, as I'm one of those on the fence. But I don't think Steve/Apple want to send that message, as it could very well lead to a class action suit and upheaval from the early adopters. So maybe it will be a silent alteration/coating of the antenna and they'll just hope to avoid media scrutiny, but it's hard to go from here to there without people questioning such a major corporation, especially after the media coverage and resulting P.C.

And oh, as for this "heavily rumored" bit...you're on the Mac Rumors forums--where everything is "heavily" rumored. (sorry for all the quotes, I don't intend it to be disrespectful...just, uhm..."analytical" :D)
Good day to you!

How about switching the antennas around?

You 'fail' with your worthless addition to this forum.
Sad, we used to be able to have some good back and forth discussions on here.
Now it seems 70% of the people on here sign up to post-
Fail/Cool story
BTW cool story bro

Really, guy? I typed up an essay (post #60) for your good ol' fashioned "back and forth" and I'm not contributing? Really? And sorry, but swapping the antenna around is a 'fail' anyway you look at it. Think before you post.

Oh, btw, your post...VERY productive. I can whine about the state of the forums these days too, if that's your idea of contributing.

Also, your story = not cool story, bro.

Not safe to buy yet.

don't buy it!!! just don't... PLEASE DO NOT BUY IT!!! Especially if you are in Canada!

Give the chance other people who really want it! It is SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE we do not need anymore competition of buyers!!

So, here's the answer for you.. DO NOT BUY IT. D O ==> NOT <== BUY IT.

"Should I buy or should I wait now?!"

"If I buy there will be trouble?!"

"If I wait there will be double?!"

It's fine. People who tell you otherwise have no idea what they are talking about. My family has 2 iPhone 4s. No problems. We got two free bumpers and we couldn't be happier.
