Actually since Spirit is a userland jailbreak it could have been a jailbreakme.com type jailbreak. There's probably a good reason why they went with a computer application instead.

I don't think userland automatically means browser based. I believe it means that the exploit is within the firmware.

Well a userland exploit means the commands needed to run can be run as user and not as root. You might be right though, perhaps the commands they need for the exploit can't be run through safari this time.

Untethered != Browser based.

Untethered means you don't need a computer to reboot the iDevice when it's been turned off.

No it doesnt....(I dont think)

If so why would spirit use an application that they had to make work on many platforms? Why would they take the time to make it work for windows and mac if they could just throw up a web page and dedicate some servers.

The Spirit JB is actually 3 different exploits. http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Spirit and the injection happens at restoring from a backup. To jailbreak the phone, you need a way to inject code, and it's not always Safari that has the bug to exploit. So userland != Safari != just run from user mode.

At first I thought you were trying to say untethered equaled browser-based, then I came to the conclusion that you don't know programming code.

Nothing important to add. Just want to watch this thread for laughs. And occasionally some true information might be posted. :p

What's funny about this thread? A userland exploit can be run from a website on your phone(given that the exploits used are applicable). Userland exploit always means untethered since it's higher in the boot process.(untethered means no computer needed to reboot). Not much info to laugh at. And I'll bet you bragging rights it'll be done via your iPhone =].

Man - just saying that is too easy. Not saying you are lying, but that's just too convenient.

Well they didn't say it would be browser based, but that "it's going to be awesome". Anyway, nothings guranteed. We'll see.

What's funny is that everyone is trying to describe all of the different ways in which the JB tools can be released. Here is where it gets really funny.
1)- I'm not the most computer illiterate person on the web, but some of you are talking over my comprehension level.
2)- Someone stated that if it's implemented through the mobile Safari browser, could Apple actually stop or restrict it from being implemented that way?
3)- Also, how would it be done? Would it require the ability to "download" from the website? (See what I mean about talking over my level?) I have a download program from the App store, so that's actually a non-issue.
4)- I didn't get the desire to jailbreak until after iOS 4.0 was released & I upgraded. This is actually why I'm keeping track of this thread for the occasional piece of useful info. If the new 4.0 JBs work for first time jailbreaking, good. If it requires SHSH blobs from previous firmwares, I'm screwed. At least watching this will prevent one more useless thread getting started somewhere down the line.

Does that make sense now?

The very first jailbreak was a userland jailbreak. You just went to jailbreakme.com and pressed a button or something, safari crashed, ran some code, you rebooted and you were jailbroken. The only thing Apple can ever do with these exploits is release a firmware update that patches them.

Jailbreaking never requires your SHSH blobs unless you rashly update to a new firmware AFTER the jailbreaks are released. Apple have no way of knowing what exploits the dev team have found until they release the jailbreak so you'll always be good with your current firmware

Well, until JB tools for 4.0 are released, I'm not going to be able to jailbreak. Since I never know just what I've done by mistake until it's too late, I went ahead & saved SHSH for 4.0. I don't plan to update to any new OS until after a JB tool has been released in the future. At least I have learned not to be so overexcited about a new Apple firmware update. After I JB, I'll be disappointed when Apple sends out new firmware. :p

I will also not update my iPhone much anymore, though to be honest I think 4.0 is quite buggy in many ways. But I want to jump ship to T-Mobile ASAP so I can actually make calls on my Phone. I wish they'd hurry up with the jailbreak. I'd be willing to pay to have my 3GS with 4.0 jail broken and unlocked if I knew it would work, thats how badly I want to get off of AT&T.

I think next time I buy an iPhone, which may be next year, I will probably just buy from a Canadian Apple store (got family there) and get it factory unlocked and save myself all the headaches and hassles (though granted, It'll probably cost me $500-$600, but when you consider $199 + $325 cancellation fee + 1 month of useless AT&T service, that just about breaks even anyway).

How much is the iPhone 4 16gb going for in Canada? Do they now require a passport to return back to the States?

Yes, its been like that for a year or 2 now.
No more just using your ID or drivers licence to get back into the US from Canada or even for cruise ships.
I expect canadian unlocked iphones to flood ebay soon.
Prices will be up there though at the beggining.
In Canada they will go for $649 and $749 Can$
But to suffer with Edge speed is going to be a drag for Tmobile.

I'd be down to trading you my 32gb 3GS on iOS4 ;) I'm using a Nexus one right now anyways since I am still deciding if its worth it to go with Edge on my iPhone or blazing fast 3G on TMobile

The price wasn't posted last I looked for the iPhone 4 as it's not on sale yet (just says coming soon). But the 3GS is $549 Canadian which is almost the same in USD. I figure the iPhone 4 probably will be $649 at MOST (which is 620 USD), but we'll find out by the end of the month.

Hopefully one of my cousins will be willing to pick one up and mail it and I'll just reimburse them. Hopefully by the time iPhone 5 comes out my 3GS will have enough resale value to cover shipping and offset the cost a tad. :) I am definitely sitting out the iPhone 4 though.

Maybe I can make a snowboarding trip out of this winter.
