Computerworld reports on a successful launch of the iPhone 4 in China on Saturday. Over 1,000 lined up outside of Xidan Joy City shopping mall to buy the newest iPhone on launch day. The first customer in line had waited 2 days. IDG shows video of the long lines:

China Unicom reports that 50,000 users pre-ordered the device for launch day. The iPhone 4's launch comes only 3 months after the U.S. launch which helped keep demand high despite a healthy grey market for the phones. In contrast, the iPhone 3G launched in China a full 2 years after its U.S. launch.

Kinda paradoxical that China is the country that manufactures iPhones but is the last one to actually sell them.

Agreed, the phones have been assembled in China since the original iPhone, yet they couldn't buy them officially in their own country - sounds backwards to me. The rest of the world gets them before their own country.

I was thinking just that.

They probably also ship from China, assembly, back to the US, marketing and packaging, and back to China again

Awesome Apple. I've been waiting for an iPhone 4 for 2 months now but Virgin in Australia doesn't get any supplies. Why expanding into new markets when you can't meet demand in the existing ones?

IPhone 3G did not launch a full 2 years later in China

2007 + 2 = 2009 ? :)

No, the iPhone 3G launched in the US on July 11, 2008 (not 2007), and in China on Oct 30th, 2009. That's roughly 15 and a half months, or 1.29 years. Not even close to 24 months or "a full 2 years".

& in israel in 24th in september :)

cant believe that we got the iphohe 4 before china :D

& here's the video from the launches of iphone 4 in israel before 2 days ago

& they are not advertising how much iphone sales yet before the launch was in the morning before shabat .. maybe today :)

Hooray...they have their iPhones at last!

Something to distract them from not having any human rights or universal suffrage ;)

Two days in line? Nice.

But nothing beats that week long iPhone waiting guy.

Dude, that blog of the living-in-his-parents-basement gamer geek waiting for his iPhone 4 was one of the best famous / infamous threads IMO. We attacked him, some defended him, debated social issues, the economy and even a religion sub-thread started up. I hope the next big iPhone launch creates another cluster orgy like that again. Epic!

Here in Taiwan, we got the iPhone 4 two weeks ago - 150,000 were pre-ordered and sold out the first day.

The current waiting list, according to the Apple resellers here and Chunghua Telecom, is 200,000 people.

Maybe I should fly to China to get me one, since it looks like I'll never see one in Taiwan.

Apple really has challenges in organizing the Iphone distribution, where I live I4 has been available in shops without queuing.

Hm, population of China 1.3bn and approx 60k sold.
Population of Taiwan 23m with 150K sold and 200k preordered.

Something strange is going on here...

Who cares?

Let's be honest, who really cares? This is macrumors.com not macrumors.ch or whatever the hell their suffix is.
