I'm sorry but this whole thing is complete crap.

Don't drop your phone! Its not Apples fault someone dropped their phone and it broke.

Yes, it is Apple's fault if they made it so that it slips out of your hand or pocket easier. It's common sense.

I own 3G and my wife owns 4. I can't decide to go with 4, simply because it just doesn't feel right in my hands. Every time I hold it I feel like I should be super careful, and that just won't cut it out there on the mean streets of New York :)

Sure, there are protective cases out there, but they are not made by Apple (the bumper doesn't really protect) and they defeat the purpose of going for the superior look of the hardware that only Apple has, which is just a huge bummer for me.

I've decided to wait for either 5 (assuming it feels better in hand) or at least the white one, where the coolness of it would add more to the justification of treating it like a precious piece of design artwork, rather than a utility device.

Irresponsible person? Really? And about "how do you design the phone"... Somehow every other phone manufacturer got it right. They decided not to use all-glass case. Was it really that difficult?

If you care so much about the danger of dropping your phone, then go buy a droid. No one would think any less of you for it. It just seems like it would be the best option for you as the iPhone apparently isn't tailor made to your specific needs.

How do you design a phone to be impervious to every stupid thing an irresponsible person will do to it? The phone functions within normal operational tolerances as it's intended to, and it's pretty highly resistant to shattering. I've accidentally knocked the thing off countertops, etc. and had it go flying... That's happened to my glasses, too. I don't go screaming at Zeiss or Younger or Bausch and Lomb every time I look down at the floor and fail to hold my glasses so they don't slide off my face.

Be accountable to your own stupidity and have a sense of proportion. It's not an M1 Abrams tank, nor is it claimed to be. If you want something shatterproof, I have a Rolex GMT Master II. It's lasted me 15 years, and I got it partly because I wanted a relatively indestructible watch because I'm a clutz.

However, it also costs about $9000 for the current model. The face, scratchproof and extremely impact resistant, is made of transparent sapphire instead of glass, and costs about $500 by itself. You get what you pay for.

Fact is the iPho4 has 2 glass surfaces instead of 1, and the edges of the glass are unprotected. How you fail to see a correlation with this fact and the data presented in the article is a mystery to me.

Think I'll just hold on to my 3GS till next years 5.

Smart! Very, very smart.

The only reason I got stuck with an iP4, is I trusted Apple to build a better "new model" and sold my 3Gs just a few days before my new iP4 arrived.

Having no interest in going backwards, nor buying a used 3Gs I've stuck with the iP4, although it took four exchanges to get one that would suffice. And I'm not even picky. It was one significant fault after another, all confirmed at the Genius Bar and to Apples credit, swiftly replaced on the spot.

As a serious Apple enthusiast, the greatest reason for my disappointment is to witness the decline of Apple quality, and concern for the customer.

I've owned many Apple computers, iPods, and other gear. All have been stellar, perfect ? No. But excellent and never shipped with a significant design fault.

The iP4 is a disgrace to the Apple name. Made worse by the fact that it's CEO was well aware of the problem in advance but ordered them to "ship it" anyway.

Going forward, I'm hoping Apple will show just a shred of conscious and concern for it's customers, before shipping another defective design. Perhaps they will avoid salting the wound by further insulting it's customer base with some off hand comment by a CEO with loose lips and a massive misplaced ego.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons why more people are buying Android phones that iPhone nowadays.

Apple encased the phone in glass and now people are shocked to see a high incidence of damage with the IP4?

Apple decided to embrace form over function. In the past apple married both form and function in an awesome design. This time they disregarded function altogether, as witnessed by the antenna problem and back of the phone easily being cracked/shattered.

My biggest issue has been from slipping. If I don't have that bumper case on, and I set my phone on a couch arm or my leg when i'm sitting, it slides off. It's a pretty sneaky devil, too. It creeps at the beginning so I don't notice until it's too late!
[knock on wood] Thankfully, no scratches or cracks yet, but if something is going to damage my phone, my money's on a slide-'n-fall.

For the "Apple sucks" crowd that loves to camp this forum, feel free to Google "shattered glass" and "X" (X being your glass-screened smartphone of choice) and enjoy the gallery of shattered screen photos.

I'd take the beautiful-but-slippery back of the iPhone 4 over that ugly terraced plastic back of the Droid Incredible any day of the week.

I don't see how 3.9% is high, seeing how the phone is make of glass. I would think more like 10-15% would be high.

Simple solution... DONT BLOODY DROP IT!

Oh I wish they made those ming vases out of rubber. I just keep dropping them, theyre so flawed.

this is a non story

A friend of mine dropped his iphone 4 with the bumper on and the screen shattered. The phone still works perfectly and it didn't dent the trim. My question is can they repair it? and about how much would it cost to replace the front glass?

I'd love to read the full list of "other" in this pie chart. I'm sure "Dog chewed on it.," "Threw it after arguing call with girlfriend." and "Kids dropped it down garbage disposal." are in the list.

I have one, but would obviously not be covered. I was taking a picture (2G I think) of the intake on my ski and dropped it. It slid under the motor and that was that since there was a little water in the hull and I figured it was toast. I finally got it out after jumping some waves and suprise (not) the screen was totally screwed. Let it sit in the garage for a few days and then plugged it in. OS recognized it after a bit, but I could not do anything with it. In retrospect I really should have taken it to the Apple store just to get the reaction.

It's not just that it has more glass. It's also that it's thinner with sharper edges that offer less traction against the skin of your hands, while at the same time being heavier.

When I hold 3G in my hands, I feel like I have a good grip of it, when I hold 4, it just doesn't feel like it's made to be held tightly, because as I tighten my grip the edges are uncomfortably cutting into my hand. Bumper helps with this, but it's really pathetic to need a piece of prosthetic plastic to fix a flawed design.

Good luck with that

Thats like saying its a drinking glass companies fault because people at home are dropping their glasses on the floor and the glasses break.

Good analogy, call me when you get one that is suitable

Assuming apple sold about 3 million iPhones, we're talking about 141,000 (using 4.7% figure reported in the first post)
phones breaking because of glass. No matter how you slice it, having over 141,000 users dealing a broken phone is way too much.

This of course is only a subset since it does not include users who do not have squaretrade.

So you carry a ming vase around with you every where you go pulling it out of pockets, etc...? You guys are hillarious. You think that because you have not dropped your phone yet that is the simple solution. It's like saying don't sneeze, it's GOING to happen. But you are right this is a non story since as usual everyone else is wrong (~141,000 customers)... until you drop your phone...

Apparently some people do not get it. Why do you compare a phone to a glass? How about a hammer? What if Apple made a hammer out of glass? Would you still insist it was not Apple's fault that the hammer broke the first time it got used? Phones do get dropped. That's the fact of life well understood by all other phone manufacturers out there. Have you ever heard of broken Droid X back? I did not think so. Because it was designed with specific purpose in mind. Same can be said about iPhone, it's just the purpose is different - brainwash and sell, sell , sell.

Yes because no one talks about Droid X here, that might be a popular topic on Android forums but not here. No one talks about Nokia here either, so it means nothing.

The only company that's brainwashing people is google, making them believe that they all open and friendly.

I've dropped my phone from 3 feet onto a marble floor with no sign of damage.

So clearly it's not brittle. I can say "Apple put cinnamon in the phone" but that doesn't make it true.

If there are people out there subjecting their phones to more force than that, well, I'm sure it's bound to happen but at some point you have to be realistic. Not everyone's accident is going to be 'saveable.'

(By comparison I DID crack the plastic back of my 3G once. So surveys don't prove what will happen to an individual. Chance is still the biggest factor.)

Strength and brittle are 2 very different properties.

Glass is very brittle. It means if it will break before it flexes. So falling and landing the wrong way means it will chip which generally will form a crack. Steel for example is elastic. That means it can and does flex before it breaks.

Glass screens break. Everybody gets it. We also get that the phone screen has to be made out of glass. That's not the point. In this image gallery of yours, try finding X phones with shattered backs.

One other possible contributing factor to low quality of iPhone screens is that, as I understand, Apple opted for using some no-name cheap Chinese glass manufacturer for iPhone (instead of Corning's Gorilla Glass). This fact was revealed when white iPhone was delayed: "The delay in the launch of white colored iPhone 4 devices has reportedly been tracked to precision issues with Apple’s supplier of glass panels – a Chinese company called Lens Technology. It was reported by the 21st Century Business Herald, a Chinese news daily, that Lens Technology was finding it difficult to get the proper opacity and the paint thickness for the pure white coating that was required by Apple on the glass."

Noones saying its the solution but its not rocket science that if you drop your phone its your own fault. I dropped both my iphones with no damage, I dropped my plastic nokia and cracked the thing to death. Does that make Nokia using plastic a problem?

Id really love to cry for the 141000 customers but quite literally I dont have the patience.
what would you make it out of? steel? iron? ffs
