Yes it may be hard for people like you to grasp how a blue collar outside occupation works but this case is very necessary. Also unless your prepared to pony up 200 beans for everyone who needs their phone replaced due to damage, don't question the lengths that some feel necessary to go for protection.

People like me? I'm an automotive builder/fabricator, and am by NO means a "white collar" guy. But thanks, though ;)

Heck, I frequently keep my iPhone 4 sitting in the car's engine bay (usually sitting on the strut tower) listening to Tune-In Radio when working on cars. You know how I protect it? I set it on a shop towel. I even frequently answer my phone (so as to avoid getting yelled at from the gf) while I'm laying under a car working. I've dropped it a few times but my bumper has protected it just fine.

My phone sees welding, grinding, painting, heavy shop tools, etc.

The only problem I have with doing this is that I get the screen dirty. But it wipes right off.

Don't be so defensive. My post was only semi-serious, as evidenced by the ":p" at the end. Besides, I even admitted the OtterBox iPhone 4 case is a small miracle compared to their other ones.

Well we all can't work cushy white collar office jobs in the air conditioning. Is this case necessary? Absolutely. I happen to work a job where I am outside in the elements all day except for lunch. This is in Florida, in 90 degree humid soup where storms pop out of nowhere and dump rain. Add onto that tons of dust and mud and sand and clay. Lol even with all those potential dangers you mention, I think my girlfriend's clumsiness is an even greater threat. She needs this case

This thread made me break down and buy an Otterbox Defender case. Mainly because I keep the phone in a back pocket, and after reading the stories of shattered back glass, I rather spend cash on a good enclosure than take the risk of ending up spending more cash dealing with a broken back plate.

Or you could stop carrying it in your back pocket. It's a glass phone, nut a tin of chew. :p

OtterBox cases have got to be some of the most hideous phone cases I've ever seen. It has absolutely astounded me how OtterBox manages to sell ANY of their cases, let alone the fact that they're wildly popular.

With full knowledge of how haltingly disgusting the OtterBox 3G cases are (a couple weeks ago on a plane trip, I sat near a couple who each had their iPhones buried under some huge plastic monstrosities - later on I discovered they were OtterBox cases), I've got to say the iPhone 4 OtterBox case is something of a small miracle coming from the OtterBox design team.

But seriously - people who buy these cases - really? Is it that necessary?

Do you also send your children off into life coated in packing peanuts, wrapped with packing tape, and then covered in several layers of cardboard too? :p

Although they are bulky, I don't think they're ugly. Sure, I wouldn't use it everyday like some people do because I agree that it takes away from the elegance of the iPhone 4 with nothing on it. However, I will be getting one of these for when I go camping or trail riding on my mountain bike.

Yeah this is how I plan on using it. The majority of time that I use my phone it will be naked (well gelaskin), but occasionally when I go riding, disc golf, beach, etc. it will be nice to have a case that will let me not have to worry about it.

And as someone else said it looks SOO much better than the 3GS version.

Ugly it may well be, just like a Hummer. However, our nation's warriors, our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, police, firemen, public works and utility service people do their day's work in horrendous environments. Water, extreme temperature variations, dirt, blood, sand, sewage, sweat, and grime.

Design is a luxury, utility is a necessity. It would be nice to have a reasonably priced marriage of the two, but since I can only get one or the other, I would choose necessity over luxury.

In my next life I want to work in a cubicle with air conditioning and guaranteed lunch breaks. Wow, what a tough way to earn a living.

Just to warn people (and I posted this in another Otterbox Defender thread):

You know how the Otterbox Defender for the previous iPhones had plastic over the camera (like the screen) and a thin membrane covering the earpiece, speaker, and mic so that everything was covered by either plastic, rubber, or that mystery membrane material? Not so with the iPhone 4 version. I got mine today and was very disappointed to see that the camera & flash, earpiece, speaker, mic, and noise canceling hole at the top are all completely exposed - completely unprotected. This was a big thing for me, and I'm not happy that I've got so many holes for moisture, dust, and debris to sneak into now. I'm thinking of trying a coffee filter to cover the holes and see how that works, but I was sorely disappointed by this change in design.

I find it ironic when people who buy these cases say they are buying it to protect their iPhone 4 and while on their rough neck jobs, they can still enjoy the ipHone 4.

Seriously, if you wrap up a beautiful phone like the iPhone 4 in a nasty box like this otterman box, you can just use any other phone in place of the iPhone4. What's the point when it's all wrapped up in heavy armor like this?

The iPhone 4 is all about: design, lightweight, stainless steel band, dual glass, just beautiful design. If you gotta wrap it up like a black skin burrito, just use another phone instead.

Unless you take the phone out of the ugly box after you leave your job, then that's ok I can understand that point. I actually saw some people with these nasty boxes at the mall. I can understand a silly bumper, but man, this is just going a bit far with protection.

The next revision will probably be a titanium box shaped like a box to hold your iPhone 5.

I ain't no Rocket Surgeon but I'm thinkin' the coffee filter will really impair the camera & flash performance.

Thanks for posting that. I was about to post the same thing. I work in the same kind of conditions as you in Louisiana. I work in plants. I have had my otterbox on my phone since I bought it a year ago. (3gs) I rarely take it off. I took it off the other weekend for ONE DAY. Guess what I did? Cracked my screen! I have dropped my phone with the otterbox on it SO MANY times on concrete. NOTHING. This is a great case for me and people in my situation.

So the Iphone is all about looks? Right. Find me another phone that does everything the iphone does, as fast as the iphone does it, browser like the iphone, and everything else included in the iphone software. If you can take that and put it into an unbreakable design, which may be ugly and heavy, but durable just like the otterbox. I GURANTEE you tons of people would buy it. It's not for everyone , but some people do need it day to day. Not to mention just the security of knowing you can't easily break your phone. You will probably be the next one starting a thread whining how you glass broke and want apple to replace it.

The iPhone 4 performs just a spectacularly in the Otterbox as it does naked. To you the iPhone is all about appearance, to me it is all about performance.

The Otterbox looks great, fully functional yet rugged. And, if you see me at the mall shoot me & call 911 as I have been abducted by the "Body Snatchers".

This version cannot come soon enough, thanks for the heads up.

Apparently you were channeling my thoughts, only more quickly LOL, as I wrote the post directly under yours.

It's called compromising/balance. If you want a tank, you buy a tank. You don't buy a BMW and expect it to be as strong as a tank. If it ends up being as strong as a tank, probably the fuel efficiency will suffer greatly. It's about being balanced.

There's no whining about dropping your phone and shattering GLASS. Most of you guys who are obsessed with protecting your phone forget that at the end of the day, it's just a phone; sure an expensive phone. Just try not to drop it. If your job requires physical action, just don't bring the iPhone 4 with you. Use another cell phone.

My point is don't wrap it up like this nasty otter box because what's the point. If you take out the iPhone 4 after your job, than that's fine. But to have it be used daily is just ludicrous. I went with a case for all THREE of my iPhones and finally, I got rid of my ugly incipio on my iPHone 4 finally and it feels so damn good. I don't drop phones daily; I try my best to make sure it doesn't fall on concrete either. If the phone does shatter and break, I'll pay $199 apple care replacement - lesson learned.

edit: it's about looks AND performance - An otterman box does not look good at all. The argument of having the iPhone 4 function in an ugly otterman box is moot. Buy another phone for your heavy duty job instead.

Exactly. I don't even have a job like that, but I still like the peace of mind that pretty much no drop of any kind will do any damae to my very expensive, glass phone. Plus, I love the bulk. The phone is too thin for me without it.

Your argument isn't very good...some people need all/most of the functionality that the iPhone offers, yet work in environments that aren't very good for the design of the iPhone. The Otterbox allows the iPhone to still function as designed and be safe in environments it normally wouldn't be very safe in. It's the best of both worlds. They get the functionality of the iPhone yet also get added ruggedness, which is also removable when and if desired. The thing that draws most people to the iPhone isn't the look anyway...it's all that the phone can do. Hell, the 3G and 3GS looked like bars of soap (especially in white). I doubt that most people buy the iPhone for what it looks like. The Otterbox case overcomes the delicate design that Apple made for people who need it.

I need the protection because my kids are not as careful with it as I am. I let my 4 year play games on mine. She is more prone to drop it than I am. I'm not going to keep it from her just because it's a expensive device. The iPhone/Apps provide fun and educational benefit to her. In return, I consider the case like buying insurance. We don't like to pay for it but it sure is nice for when you need it. Productivity not appearance for me.

My BMW is pretty much built like a tank. A lightweight rocket powered tank, but a tank nonetheless.

I get it you don't understand, not the first time in your life surely. I'm going to continue to use my iPhone in my "job that requires physical action" even without your permission. And as to the whining in this thread, well....it's you. What jobs require no physical action?

Ok enough, what is this Otterman Box you keep referencing? It's an OtterBox, and it is the perfect case for my use.

Ok, I guess you're entitled to your opinion, but a couple of suggestions if you have to dog something that works so well for so many iPhone owners...

First, it's OTTERBOX! Not otterman, ottoman, or whatever other iteration you so cleverly (you seem to think) you come up with.

Second, you keep calling it "nasty". Now, I've seen a lot of nasty things in my life, but I've yet to see a single cell phone case that I would consider "nasty". Hookers are nasty...a cell phone case isn't "nasty". If you could, instead of hurling insults at the case, and in the process sounding like an overbearing oaf, explain what makes it "nasty" specifically.

Carry on.

So just because I work in construction, I have to own 2 phones? I use my ip4 for browsing, games, whatever during lunch and stream music heavily during the day. That would mean I would have to buy 2 smartphones so I could "use another cell phone" and with the data plans, additional line fees, etc. Not very practical. I think I'll lug around this atrocious case, thanks. ;)
