Phone back and so far so good...

Just got the iPhone 4 dropped by FedEx, boot up with no "no sim installed" message, this is a good sign. I will report back in 24 hours (or before that) rather I get the "no sim installed" message again. Thanks for all the info and support!!

BTW, it is a new phone.

I had this problem last night. It corresponded exactly with me giving the phone the "death grip." I was watching the bars go up and down and then all of a sudden: no SIM. Airplane mode off/on fixed it and then I did the death grip again and it happened again!

haha, I keep getting this every other day.

Anyone go to the apple store to get theirs replaced yet? Or do they not have any replacements yet?

I found an apple store out here in Vegas this morning to replace my phone no problem (I walked in and instantly showed them my phone with the NO SIM message). They came in a black box so they were new ones and not refurbished ones. I think your good to go on new ones considering how new the phones are.

I should go soon ... it might just pop back saying sim inserted again.

Yes, if you have problem go to Apple store and get a new one. They come in little black box. I feel like Apple specially made these little box knowing they will have bunch returns. This is also the first time I receive a replacement. I'm now thinking to get the Apple Care...

If you can, DO go to the store. It's easy.

However, I live in a very small town, 250 miles from the nearest Apple store. My local AT&T store was quick to agree that the phone was faulty, but won't be getting any more of them for weeks. They said they'd hold one for me, but said we'd save time going directly to Apple. No finger poin

I was worried about the runaround, but I actually had one of my best customer service phone calls EVER with Apple just now. They should ALL be this easy.

The cool thing -one reason why the call was so painless (aside from him being a generally pleasant guy) is that he said he'd read all about this problem on macrumors! The guy couldn't have been nicer, the process couldn't have been easier.

AND because I have Apple Care, they're sending the new phone out right away, waiving the $29 processing/shipping fee, and are letting me keep the old phone until the new one arrives. I can barely hold a call, but hey, I can play games and goof around on Wi-fi.

That's a small example. Following a dead video card on MacBook Pro (discussed here a while back), I got the motherboard swapped out twice, virtually immediately, for free. I now buy Apple Care every single time.

Seriously, as long as Apple's in charge of making this stuff, you need to protect yourself from them. :D

My friend who's a specialist at Apple said you can bring the phone in and they'll replace it. Defect in phone. There's no chance that the phone they give is refurbished right?

Just want to report back and say so far so good, no more "no sim installed" message.

As for a replacement, I was told at this point they don't have any refurbished phone. It's too early to have refurbished phone. (at least from what I was told...)

Quick update....

Figured I'll come back and do a quick update. I have not had the "no sim installed" since I received the new phone. All is good so far. Although I'm starting to think I should get the Apple care for it.

Yep. Replacement handset did the trick. I'm a believer in AppleCare, if for no reason from my expectation that 18 months from now I'm going to need a fresh battery.

Then again, giving how much I pay ATT every month (I'm the primary line on my family plan and I pay for it). I only had the 3GS for 8 months and I was already eligible for upgrade, I have a feeling that I'll be eligible for update the next one comes around. That's not to say I won't go to Verizon if iPhone ever gets there....

Didn't have this problem at all until last Friday, did it once or twice. Now tonight it has done it 4 times in 3 hours, usually while I'm on the phone. Calling AppleCare tomorrow morning before the press conference to see what they say. Thinking it may be my phone.

New iPhone user - got my iP4 on 7/07 and started the No SIM messages a week later on 7/14. Went to AT&T and got a new SIM on 7/15 and within 2 or 3 hours was getting No Sim again. BTW, my replacement SIM has the 3G logo and is the larger contact area style than the previous original SIM. I can get signal back via power cycle and/or flight mode toggle and/or reseating the SIM but even some of those are inconsistent as others are also saying. Haven't experimented with resetting network settings so can't comment on that.
Just did the 4.0.1 update about 20 minutes ago - so far so good as far as not gettting any No SIM messages but way too early to speculate on it yet.

UPDATE: Received another No SIM message within a couple of hours of doing the 4.0.1 update Thursday evening, got the phone to recognize it again but No SIM message back first thing Friday morning. Got rid of the No SIM message and made it thru the day Friday or so I thought until I discovered I couldn't dial out on the way home even though the phone was showing signal and appeared normal (hadn't tried any calls nor did I receive any that day). Flight mode toggle and power cycle didn't help so did a reboot and was then able to make calls. At that point I likely had switched towers so hard to say if the phone's fault or not.
In the meantime I called the AT&T store to see if they'd switch out my phone but was told to go thru Apple. I'm still easily within my 30 days so I could return the phone to them & walk away (supposedly anyway) but they're not willing to get me a replacement??? So I called Apple late Friday morning shortly before their press conference and spent 30 or so minutes on the phone with them. Pretty painless process as I explained I'd already tried a different SIM and applied their 4.0.1 update but still having issues and they did some checking/authorizing and agreed to an advanced replacement which according to Fed-Ex tracking will be here Monday morning.
I made it thru most of Saturday without the No SIM message but it showed back up late afternoon/early evening. Received a few more of them Saturday evening but been okay again up thru now which is late Sunday morning. So for now I await the replacement phone and go from there.

Well it happened to me again yesterday. "no sim" message and could not get it to go away . Drove to apple store and the retard bar. Basically had to through a tantrum to get it replaced AGAIN!!! I swear to god if this one does it I am flying to Cupertino and giving Steve an iPhone suppository.

Just to update...thats 2 phones in a row same issue.

That sucks. Hang in there guys...no problems here (aside from proximity) since I got my new handset a couple weeks ago.

Yep, figured I'd come back and see how the thread is doing. It's been about 2 weeks since I got the replacement iPhone 4. So far so good.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead*

I'm constantly getting this error. I don't know whether to replace the sim or replace the iPhone instead.

haha Wasn't expecting to see this thread again. :)

When I had this problem when the phone was released, I first tried a new SIM which didn't help. Switching the phone resolved my issue. Probably easier to start with the SIM I guess...
