Never mind contacting just apple support, anyone considered emailing Steve himself?? He supposedly has been known to reply to emails, and at least that way he can't deny he doesn't know!! I'd do it myself but I haven't got one yet, just a reservation for tomorrow, which I'm now seriously reconsidering.

Already emailed Steve himself, let's see what happens.

We did that.

hmm, I think if this is a hardware issue, we can all expect trade-ins for updated models, or free bumpers (or both).

Trade-in, yes. Free bumpers is not a permanent solution. Perhaps free bumpers while we WAIT for our trade-in, but suggesting to simply use a bumper/case and that's it is NOT a proper solution. Problem is... looks like there is a shortage of bumpers too, so I doubt Apple could even provide free bumpers to everyone who buys an iPhone 4.

One more followup:

What we really want to know is if anyone else is seeing this symptom?

It's not so much of an issue to us about the masking raw reception (we do know about that), it's the sharp decrease when one comes in contact with the antennae.

Dear God i thought it was ME! Mine does the EXACT, and I mean EXACT same thing. Seriously wtf?

OMG!!!

What a FAIL! :(

I always wondered when I first saw the keynote, that was the new antenna system such a good idea. I mean to literally touch the antenna with your bear hands, doesn´t fit with my common sense. And sometimes hands can be sweaty...

Now I don´t know if I even want to buy the iPhone 4. This could be a dealbreaker. God what a FAIL! :(

Somebody put some rubber gloves on and try if the problem repeats? :p

Recall!!! Recall!! Recall!!!

This is like a bad dream, now I have to buy that stupid bumper to get reception

Good one Apple

This issue can be a real deal breaker for me. Im probably just in denial because i love apple so much, but you guys think that maybe its an issue because its before the official launch date? Idk.. Im just so surprised that apple would release something that seems to have something wrong.:(

Just don't ring anyone. No big deal.

Maybe this is why they invented face time. You can only call someone when at home, therefore freeing the phone companies from iPhone users, releasing bandwid back into the wild making the service better for others.
This is obviously the reason why they came up with the bumpers. Why else would apple randomly enter the case game? iPad is understandable but iPhone bumpers....which only go around the side conveniently where the antennae are located.

iPhone 4 - the only phone in the world you cannot hold while on a call.

Just waiting for the apple branded Bluetooth headset.

Thankfully I picked up a Rocketfish soft gel case from Best Buy, the phone works fine with the case on. Unfortunately I hate cases. But for the folks getting a phone tomorrow, Best Buy should have some of these cases in stock, just not the Apple bumper. The case is actually pretty nice, and it says its for an iPhone 4G:).

I don't know if this was mentioned already, but I did try to go into diagnostic mode and find out the dB, but the *3001#12345#* didn't work. Did Apple change it?

Perhaps everyone on this forum with the problem should block email 'Steve' to make sure there is a reply?

So I just called my wife by holding the phone at the top and bottom between my fingers. Call connected, full bars. Switched to holding it like a phone, bars dropped one by one until finally the call got disconnected. Ouch.

Wow, just made several more calls. Every single call gets dropped when holding the phone like a phone.

Glad others are experiencing the same issue so at the very least its a universal fix versus, unique issue affecting a limited number of phones due to manufacturing issues or HW assembly problems...

I'm not an RF engineer but from my experience so far the call stays up until the phone goes in to no service mode. To get to no service level I had to drive off to an area where I normally drop calls while holding the phone in my left hand.
Soon as I drove to a stronger signal area, away from directly under a tower, I got a single bar back and was able to make calls and transmit data... Used iNetwork to test while on the phone and got decent numbers back for data...

Download: 1549.461 kbs
Upload: 80.940 kps
Latency: 205.92 ms

These numbers are about par for Denver area...

So time to go find a stupid bumper and hopefully mitigate the antennae issues.

The Product Manager at Apple for Bumpers just got him/herself at least 500k dedicated orders talk about building a product for success...

I know there's a shortage now, but I'm pretty sure they could whack out a fair few in a couple of days if this thing is as big as it might look.

though judging from the thread, it may not be as widespread as we think - there aren't that many iPhone 4 users out there just yet, and it seems like the majority of them are not posting in this thread, so there seems to be just a handful of people with the issue. Not saying that it might not be widespread, but you'd like to think that even a basic engineer at Apple might have considered this. Hopefully it's either a software quirk, or a bad manufacturing batch with a dodgy connection somewhere.

You do know they used to have an Apple Bluetooth headset. Apple discontinued it about a year ago. It was $99 just as much as the iPhone 3GS 8GB.

Damn!

This probably cannot be fixed by a software update. It´s an hardware issue.

Back to the drawing table Apple! :apple: :(

TEST THIS BY BEING ON A CALL!!!

Enough with the same test by everyone when you're not on a call. ACTIVELY BE ON A CALL AND DO THE TESTS!

one thing some need to keep in mind, it is also how close you are to the tower. I took mine to work , we have what i call mini towers, due to the outside alls of the building.
if i am in my office, i can cover the phone with both hands and speed test works great, and looking through my fingers i see the bars are always full

Thing is i do not want a mini tower at home to use my new iphones.

At home I can cover my 3gs with both hands and it works fine. no signal loss, just pick up the iphone 4 and bang no bars and no calls..
well at least my boss cant call me at home anymore lol
