He had WiFi on and I did not see the G3 signal in the video. Who knows maybe he unplugged his WiFi for attention. Wouldn't his signal say G3?

Reason

Maybe there's a reason no other phone manufacturer has put the antenna's on the outside of the phone (remember during the keynote at WWDC10, Steve mentioned that "its never been done")....there may be a fundamental flaw in the design.

Hopefully its only a software issue or an issue with AT&T, or a combination thereof.

Whatever the case, I'm sure it'll be addressed by the time it launches here in Canada....this is one of those rare times where im kind of glad I get to wait a short while longer for something - let the early adopters (USA) work out the kinks ;)

My iPhone JUST arrived....

The test in the video was the first thing I did....

I am able to replicate it EXACTLY as he did....I'm keeping my Verizon number for now and holding off on the port for a few days until I see how this works IRL.

TEST THIS BY BEING ON A CALL!!!

Enough with the same test by everyone when you're not on a call. ACTIVELY BE ON A CALL AND DO THE TESTS!

all caps by an expert lol who doesnt read all the posts.. Everyone doesnt include me, i wrote in my test, when i pick it up I CANT MAKE A CALL
SO how can i do the tests if i can't make the call like you demand,, what a lamer!

how do you guys hold your iphone? I use 3 fingers thumb, index and middle finger and ring finger. I don't grip my phone, the tops of my fingers are the only ones holding it. I'm left handed so my index finger is on the back of the phone thumb is on the left side, and my middle finger and ring finger on the right side of the phone

call up your mommy at work first, then hold the sides. mmm, k, thx.

get back to me.

People please get a grip. I have a 3g with iOS4 sw. If i hold the phone the way he does in the video ... sure enough I drop down to no reception. But who grips a phone like that when making a call?
When I hold the phone as I normally do(with just my fingers...not surrounded by my whole hand!) it has no effect on reception.
If you hold the phone the way he does, your fingers stop you getting it to your ear!

I challenge any one on this forum to pick up their phones now as though making a call and see how much of your hand touches the edge. I bet you don't bridge the gap and the bars remain the same.

Storm in a tea cup is the expression i think:rolleyes:

alright lets do this barney style, how about you make a call while you are not holding the phone and then when it connects you pick it up and see if it drops?

When the iPhone 3G launched, there was a thug on how cool it was with antennas. It said that it uses things like the chrome display bezel, the camera chrome border and headphone jack border as antennas. There is a flap of meta soldered to tr logic board on my 3GS that touches the chrome display bezel, but I'm not sure what antenna it is for.

Why should it matter how people hold their phones? Just because you hold it one way doesn't make it the right way.

i worked with antenna design for years, i am guessing the bottom is grounded and your shorting out the antenna with you finger, the human body is very resistive but still conductive enough to do this, someone try it with wet hands or a wire between the two and it bet its even worse.

this could be a big problem for apple, for any antenna to work you need a good ground plane that is as important as the main one its self however they should never be bridged or signal will wiped out.

i can see this needing a redesign to resolve, they may be able to hide it with a software fix so you don't see it happening but they are going to need to change the antenna setup so that they cant short out.

They are doing a live webcast on tested.com and are running FaceTime with no issues, and the guy is holding the phone in his left hand.

i am probably old enough to be your father, and my mother is dead thanks.
You are a child.
oh i have a masters in EE... i am sure you must have a phd

actually, i barely passed clown school, but at least i know that i should FIRST make a call, THEN pick up the phone. so.....that masters in EE ya got........fail.

I wrapped both hands completely around my 3G and it dropped 2 bars and that was it.

Yeah, I think in all fairness he was claiming that what was a first was the antennae serving also as the main support structure for the phone, not an antennae snuck onto the surface or surrounding the display, etc.

facetime is with wifi though, shouldn't be affected since it doesn't use tower signal?
