One more followup:

What we really want to know is if anyone else is seeing this symptom?

It's not so much of an issue to us about the masking raw reception (we do know about that), it's the sharp decrease when one comes in contact with the antennae.

I think I am.

What a cheesy way to get us to buy their ugly overpriced bumpers. Either that or they want us all to be British Dandies.

this is strange.

By my understanding, when you touch the iphone, your whole body should act like an antennae and boost the signal, but it seems like the cellular radio waves have some trouble passing through the human body, and since water is more conductive than air, all the cell radio waves choose to pass through the body, make the signal poor.

It doesn't seem to have anything to do with having trouble passing through the body.

The problem seems to be when you touch to two antennas together.

The left side is wifi/gps the right side is for the cellular network.

Touching both sides at the same time seems to affect the signal.

The worst part is that it happens when you hold it like a phone. I guess for now I'll need to make all speakerphone calls. This is dreadful.
You have thirty (30) days from date of purchase and signing of new contract to return the iPhone 4 and cancel the contract with no penalty. Also, remember: Over-anxious first adopters always get the buggy stuff. Patient people wait and let things settle down. Just saying.

InvisibleShield solution?

I wonder if the InvisibleShield being advertised on these pages would provide enough insulation to keep this issue from happening?

Same problem here. I called Apple and they said to do a hard reset, then restore the phone again from Itunes. Neither worked so they said I'd have to report it as DOA and send it back to Apple. They said they have not seen similar complaints about the phone? I told the guy to google it and he smarted off and hung up on me...

Does the invisible shield cover the sides? Thought that it was just front and back.

It's the same with wifi off. I'll post a video showing. You can see the 3G come in and go out.

If possible record the video showing the entire phone and where exactly your hand is on both sides.. and maybe test if you just touch one side with a finger.. stuff like that. It may narrow down if it's a body static issue or if it's when both antennas are linked by your hand.

Weren't people reporting that Apple sales reps were pushing the bumpers quite hard when ordering on the phone?

I can see what you're getting at and would be seriously pissed if they knew about this all along.

Surely not....

I finally activated my second iphone 4,, Exactly same issues as my first one (i put screen shots on Page 2 of this thread)

I did take my leather case, it seemed to help a little.

Now i know why apple is pushing those crappy bumpers for 30 bucks so much on launch day!!

I can't believe they didn't find such a problem like this. Yes they put re phone into a 3GS like case. But the REAL world doesn't have cases to make an iPhone 4 look like a 3GS. Stupid Steve!

this is sh#t i dont care if it works WITH a bumper - i dont want a gayass bumper. i expect it to work as it is without spending £25 on a bit of :apple: rubber

I completely agree with this, but I don't think it's something Apple would actually do, or not notice, so there must be something to it.. making me nervous now for my reservation tomorrow

i doubt Apple will recall these products, i rate they'll find a solution, and ull have to take it into an apple shop, and wam bam kapow, fixed

Can you explain to me how a software glitch is affected by the way someone holds a phone?

Yes,

Take your current iPhone 3GS or 3g, or any phone..

Now when you hold it, signal will of course drop...now here is the software part (same issue for iPhone 3g too, was then fixed in 2.1)

on the 3gs and 3g a 10dbm drop in signal could correlate to no signal loss.

On the iPhone 4 a 10dbm drop could correlate to 2 bar drop...which is why I am saying someone do this in field test mode..

If we ordered through At&t and have this issue and need to return it, would we go through At&t still or can we take it to Apple Genius Bar?

one thing to think about,, take a look at the studies done on At&t and their 3g networks..
The strongest signal in the country is all around apples hq

I was hoping that the new phone would be a reception revelation but then read all the reviews that came out this week.

It may be better, but AT&T still sucks.
