You hear that guys? If another phone had a feature before the iPhone, you aren't allowed to be really excited when it does come to the iPhone.

Well video chat is a novelty that you will use once when u first get it and maybe once again when something important enough happens.

Although over wifi will be free and if they can wrangle a good deal out of the telcos then maybe it will be ok...

Maybe that is what is new here, Apple has a lot of power over the telcos, softbank has doubled it's revenue for example since getting iphone.

The president of softbank would probably blow Steve Jobs if he asked him too:p

i dont get what people expected....its a phone do you want it to drive for you or something?

apple is usually not the first to certain things like cut copy and paste and multitasking. But they do it better then anyone else, i expect the same with video calling even though i wont be using that.

Well cut and paste and multitasking are software things, not a new phone hardware thing. I am excited about the new software. :D

It's the morons on this board that put Apple on a pedestal, where if they crawled out of Steve Jobs' sack, they would be amazed by the existing technology already out there.

Really? Just because the iphone isn't your kind of phone (which is okay as all situations are unique), please don't start trashing the iphone for the people who are excited. I am upgrading soon too and I am excited. There is no need to get up in arms. Besides, I didn't see you spending all the time and research to make a smartphone...

There are those that will NEVER be impressed with a new Apple release and others that will absolutely freak out when Steve takes the stage.

Video chat? I really don't care. Faster processor, better screen, better camera with flash, better battery life and a new design in a smaller package - those are things I care about.

I also don't care who does it first. I care about who integrates it all the best. I have played with a Droid and owned a Palm - no comparison in my mind.

This is the first iPhone update I have really been impressed with. I missed the first gen iPhone and this sounds just as big.

when I first saw it i was like OMG MUST BUY! but now meh,

-the dedicated plus minus volume buttons are very unclean a huge step back from the volume rocker. the bezel gaps look also make this look less stylish/ apple.

-screen size is the same as the original iphone. I dont see why apple chose to stay below the competition in this aspect. just extend the screen a bit....

-same storage space. this is very disappointing. even though its more than the android phones, apple could have easily had a 64GB model ala the Ipod touch.

- lol @ wifi video chats i have been doing the exact same thing free with ichat for about a decade now. horrible deception of the future...

- we are still getting the same headphones and accessories a $60 ipod shuffle, come one apple!

-in general not engough new features to warrant a new iphone IMO. not 4g data!!! If I can get one for $199 thats fine, but I seriously not going to be bending over backwards and spending a lot of money for one. if you factor in this and the capped data plans, its kind of pathetic iMO. also hate how jobs was so pleased with this that he ignored computer hardware that is long overdue for an update.

First timer here, but the announcement today and the statements that Mr. Jobs has made concerning Flash and App approval have got me wanting to say what's been on my mind. If Apple's focus is on making sure that no outside products or standards or accessories compromise the quality of the Apple user experience, then why do they continue signing contract extensions with AT&T and allow them to retain exclusivity? I hear so many people complaining of the service and see hints from Apple that their hardware/software is held back by the network that the phone is on. This doesn't add up to me.

And yes, I am frustrated that I would have to switch carriers to get an iPhone...dangit. That and spend upwards of 120 bucks for a plan that doesn't even include unlimited data anymore. What the heck? AT&T takes steps backwards while Apple is trying to move their product forward to compete with stuff like the EVO from Sprint. Frustrating!!

my thoughts exactly. its the simplicity of IOS that makes it great. Software is key and it shows when the 600mhz 3gs is just about on par with these new snap dragon 1ghz cpus.

When Apple does it on their OS, it trumps anything else.

Other people tried to do it. Apple does it right.

It matters more when Apple releases it.

Period.

[halfway kidding/halfway serious fanboi rant]

Well not dissapointent, at all:
- Welcome HD video, bye bye Kodak Zi8
- Welcome video chat, bye bye lugging a web cam to use on my 'work' Dell when away from my Family.
- Welcome robust case, bye bye cheap chinese plastic case with cracks
- Welcome flash, long time overdue
- Welcome 92 other features not disclosed yet.
Did you know that you can still talk over your iphone even it is syncing with iTunes? (this is not one of the 92)
- Welcome longer battery life

Things that I am still waiting from :apple: next model:
- 64 GB iPhone, or more
- Even longer battery life
- Screen lock
- wireless sync/connection to the data
- Unlock the iTunes sync -> so we can be able to move data from the iPhone just by drag and drop like it should be
- speed up the iTunes syncing

Still only AT&T.. Bad Apple, bad. I'm out. Won't replace my Gen 1 with another iPhone. No reception and too much money.

I was excited when it first came out here.

My Japanese friends showed me a demo. Cool. Then I asked about the cost. If memory serves it was around $1.50 per minute -- each party had to pay. So a 10 minute call was about $15 for each. We all agreed that it was too expensive, yet at the same time would be a nice way to see family when traveling.

Agreed on a nice way to see family. Living in the States with my wife's family in Japan we are hoping this version of the iphone can keep my wife better connected with family. So far as we know, it is the only US cell phone that allows easy access to Japanese Language.

I just wonder if the chat will only be for iphone-to-iphone or if one will be able to video chat iphone-to-computer. Any news of this yet? I am hoping for the latter.

64 GBS easily fits in an iPod Touch because it's using two 32 GB chips. The iPhone can only fit one flash chip because the other chip is made for communications. It's what makes the iPhone a phone.

Ram

Honestly, the ONLY thing that disappoints me about the new phone, is that Steve didn't mention the RAM, which leads me to believe that it's still 256mb. Seriously, it's just not enough to keep up with the competition. Would it be THAT hard to ramp it up to 512mb?

Well, there is a thing called competition, they have to be competitive, is this competitive against the others? Hardwarewise... no.

HTC EVO has bigger screen, HDMI out etc.

But I forgot we have to thank Apple for releasing new products with updated tech in them.

I remember not so long ago people were calling phones of that size bricks; I guess times have changed.

It's an improvement from my 3G so I'm far from disappointed and no I am not switching to Sprint (they suck even more than AT&T) and plus I don't like the Android OS:p

please explain what you wanted them to give you
I for one, expected at least a 64GB iPhone. It's rather disappointing the limit is still 32GB.

I also think it is a shame we would have to pay extra for video chat on the cell network. I am also not pleased tethering is extra too. When you think about it, data is data, shouldn't matter what it is used for as long as I don't go over what I am paying for. I can do video chat on my home computer and don't have to pay extra for it. Seems to me if the cell networks want to limit the amount of use due to their systems not being able to handle the use from customers, then maybe they need to just not make it available until they can support it, instead of charging more as a way to limit the use.

so, I ask again, by all this technology I dont really know about according to you, please tell me what you would put in this phone, keeping it relatively the same size, that would make it so much more amazing, all-knowing technology wizard

Well, you know, the stuff many other phones already have. Like a 4+ inch screen, HDMI out, video chat that works under 3G, microSD card support (or at least a bump to 64GB to offset that), USB support, non-proprietary video copy-protection, 512 MB RAM (assuming it's only 256 MB), LED notifications, 8+ megapixel camera, and a CEO who whos not a complete totalitarian towering over his blinded dominion.

The ONLY reason I stay with the iPhone is for ONE feature that is probably trivial to most but is very important to me that no phone but the iPhone has - support for lyrics display that is read from the tag information embedded in the song files. If not for that feature, I would never have gone for the iPhone in the first place. Apple is always lagging behind in technology, and even when they get around to implementing what others have had for years, it takes them a couple over generation to actually get it right. Their only truly original revolutionary self created technology over the the past 5 years was multi-touch, which was admittedly very cool, but now everyone has that so it's no longer a differentiator.

A lot of people are forgetting is Apple is about software. It's the same reason why most of you will buy a "less spec'd" Mac over a higher spec'd PC. Understand that Apple is more about making the BEST software, rather then just throwing hardware together.

So now that the antenna is supposed to be a much better one.....
One more fact that the main issue with the calls is AT&T's network....;)

Does it only have 256mb? I wasn't sure and am waiting for a teardown first. While 256 isn't bad (I would be happy with the speed of a 3GS unlike all of the ungrateful people here), more would be better when I upgrade.

In this thread: People who don't "get" Apple.

It's kind of funny how people hate on Apple for taking existing technologies out there, tweaking them to make them as simple and as intuitive as possible, and then marketing the hell out of them like they invented it. What are they supposed to do? I can see it now:

Jobs: "And now, Facetime. Now if you're in Japan or maybe even with certain other phones here in the US you've probably seen this, so we're putting it in there for the kool-aid drinkers."

Since the iPod, Apple has become better than anybody at making things that are intuitive to use, appeal to the masses, and just work. And yet there is enough under the hood to satisfy those that really like to get into the meat of a product with things like iMovie for iPhone. Has a lot of what they have done been done before or available in some way? Yes. But nobody makes it as accessible and easy to understand as Apple.
