Yeah, the reality is that Apple is starting to slip behind here. Slightly larger screens and 8mp camera's are starting to show up on a few smart phones. I want my iphone to lead the pack, not follow it. I was really hoping for a surprise 4.3" screen. I know, I know, I was dreaming. :D

Chasing megapixels is idiotic. The tiny lenses and the size of the photosites mean that if you go over 5mp on a phone camera you are LOSING quality. Ultra small photosites introduce lots of noise, and the sensor is limited by the lens quality anyway.

Lens quality in phone cameras is terrible, mostly due to the size of the glass. There is a reason SLR lenses are 20x the area of compact camera lenses. To gain quality they need to be.

.

Streethawk,

Don't you realise that it isn't the quality of images that matter?
All that matters are the numbers!
8 is bigger than 5. So 8MP it is obviously better!

Ah, i stand corrected. If only i'd learnt this when i started out twelve years ago, i'd be a better photographer now

Seriously though, as a basic guide to megapixels, the maximum you really want per device, before you start losing quality through excessive noise, are:

Phone cameras 5mp
Compacts 10mp
Bridge cameras 12mp
DSLR 25mp
Medium Format 50mp

Wow! video calling, only had that for the last 10 years here in Japan and it was never really popular because the companies charge a lot for the calls, probably why Apple are saying wifi only as they are negotiating a good deal with the telcos.

I have to see how well the hi res screen can display content, but I am disappointed, we knew everything about this phone before they announced it, was the Steve Jobs key note full of bored "seen it" faces?

I will still most likely buy it as my 3G is 2 years old and I am somewhat tied into them what with all the apps I have bought.

Well, gee wiz, mind telling me how it's Jobs' fault that he showed what you've already seen? Shouldn't you blame the douchebags at Gizmodo for spoiling the surprise instead?

Things that I am still waiting from :apple: next model:
- 64 GB iPhone, or more
- Even longer battery life
- Screen lock
- wireless sync/connection to the data
- Unlock the iTunes sync -> so we can be able to move data from the iPhone just by drag and drop like it should be
- speed up the iTunes syncing

Screen lock is in the software in iOS 4.0 and sped up iTunes syncing is in iTunes 9.2. Unlocking the iTunes sync will never come for drag and drop through Finder so don't bother waiting for that. And the battery life was already increased, I think you should take that off the list!

Count me as one who doesn't want my phone to have a bigger screen.

Yeah I think the bigger screen argument is pretty moot. I guess they can increase it a bit to the bezel, but I'm happy with the size of the device so I would not want the size of the phone to increase at all!

Well, there is a thing called competition, they have to be competitive, is this competitive against the others? Hardwarewise... no.

HTC EVO has bigger screen, HDMI out etc.

But I forgot we have to thank Apple for releasing new products with updated tech in them.

I wonder what % of smartphone users would ever use HDMI out?

Apple is kicking ass in sales because they offer a stable, great designed and easy to use smartphone that lots of people like.

Yes they don't have all the latest "geek freak" stuff that a very small amount of people will every use but they sell a great product that appeals to the power user and the newbie.

And "geek freaks" hate the iPhone because of that.

If you want a mini computer that is more of a "hip holster" sized device they are out there and you should feel special that you not only have one but can put up with the tweaks and crashes that go along with it.

Yes!

In this thread: People who don't "get" Apple.

It's kind of funny how people hate on Apple for taking existing technologies out there, tweaking them to make them as simple and as intuitive as possible, and then marketing the hell out of them like they invented it. What are they supposed to do? I can see it now:

Jobs: "And now, Facetime. Now if you're in Japan or maybe even with certain other phones here in the US you've probably seen this, so we're putting it in there for the kool-aid drinkers."

Since the iPod, Apple has become better than anybody at making things that are intuitive to use, appeal to the masses, and just work. And yet there is enough under the hood to satisfy those that really like to get into the meat of a product with things like iMovie for iPhone. Has a lot of what they have done been done before or available in some way? Yes. But nobody makes it as accessible and easy to understand as Apple.

4.3 screen most users, and by most i mean millions of people, don't want a LARGER phone.

Apple sells a lot of iPhones because they know how to package a product that appeals to the power user and the newbie.

Nuff said

Woohoo, finally, someone who has a clue about photosites:). Technically, they never were megapixels. I guess megaphotosite would be too difficult to comprehend. I closed my photography business last year. It seems that many folks with a digital camera are automatically wedding photographers. That is until the bride and groom receive their photos. Now my Canon's are sitting in what was a darkroom (when I shot film) wondering what happened:confused:. Oh well.

What are you talking about? The only thing we knew was the rough design (the finished product is so much sleeker and sophisticated than the rough prototypes that were out there) and we knew it had a front facing camera and a few other details. Other than that, most everything else was a surprise to me. So you guys have been doing video calls on your cell phones for 10 years eh? Wow, we are behind the times. :D

I would say it is BETTER than expected. The new iPhone is going to rock! I only wish there was an option for MobileMe free account..

But the Farm game was beyond ridiculous. Really lame. I would never have permitted this on such a big presentation.

Well, you know, the stuff many other phones already have. Like a 4+ inch screen, HDMI out, video chat that works under 3G

Lets see Hdmi out? Only supported by one phone released in the US htc EVO. But IMO hdmi is implemented badly on the EVO because it uses micro hdmi which is a an issue because who wants to go and buy another cable? Eh.

You mentioned video chat that works under 3G. Only sprint has that right now and it's not even real video chat because you can only call someone that has the HTC EVO version of Qik or the Fringe Software.

4 Inch screen - What for? Apps look crappy unless they are rewritten for those larger screens. I'm looking at apps on my soon to be returned EVO and they look terrible because they were written for smaller screens.

Sounds like you really don't like the new iPhone and that's fine dont buy it. But me and most other people like the new iPHone.

I wonder what % of smartphone users would ever use HDMI out?

Only Geeks would use it and that's a tiny segement of users. I can't see the average mainstream user using HDMI out. Considering that most people don't even use the HDMI on their tv sets.

Thank you.

I just bought a new 10 MP camera. It's predecessor had 14 MP. Canon is the first (that I know of) to break the "megapixel war" and I rewarded them with my money. The lower resolution is an upgrade.

I am so glad that Apple elected not to implement an 8 MP phone camera. The 5 MP will produce better images.

My operator charges the same for video calling as for any other voice call. If you have minutes it comes out of those. If you don't then its 20 cent per minute (same as voice call). Every operator is different but 3G video calling doesn't have to be expensive.

I was excited when it first came out here.

My Japanese friends showed me a demo. Cool. Then I asked about the cost. If memory serves it was around $1.50 per minute -- each party had to pay. So a 10 minute call was about $15 for each. We all agreed that it was too expensive, yet at the same time would be a nice way to see family when traveling.

this was brought up earlier, but does anyone know if the new iphone has 256 or 512 mb ram? Either way I'm getting a big boost when it becomes available, but it would be nice to know.

Well now we have video calling and it's basically free since it's on wifi not using up data. (I believe)

If your fancy Japanese phone is so great why do you have an iPhone?

Because his fancy Japanese phone doesn't work on the US's MESS of tangled wires called cellular network!

Face it, we have the tech to make the craziest phones, but we're limited to the bottle neck of our messy network in terms of how far we can push the hardware!

Canon was the one playing the megapixel game up until very recently. Nikon, imo, is the one that has not been participating and focusing on lower noise among other things.

So if the Iphone got bigger, as I was hoping, wouldn't the lens be bigger and then take advantage of the higher megapixels?
