Thank god I don't have screen discoloration but this reset network settings is working great. It isn't perfect because it kinda still happens but it's helped it a lot.

That's why I think the reset network thing is just temporarily getting a better signal which masks the problem but the shorting out is still going to happen the same.

The problem has been narrowed down:

1. It doesn't exist, or exists on all phones
2. Stupid people who don't know how to adjust rabbit ear antennas
3. It's Gizmodo's fault
4. Jobs specified an old Leica instead of a Nikon D3xs or whatever.
5. Stupid people holding it in the wrong hand or by the edges.
6. At&T's reception sucks.
7. A plot by Apple to sell more protective devices.
8. It isn't a phone, it is a life-style computer.
9. Cell phone technology sucks and should be replaced by something good.

I'm pretty much convinced that all of these are true and I am taking the following steps:

1. Use my Apple stock profits to buy a pre-pay phone from Verizon for on-road emergencies where reception may mean the difference between life and death and style doesn't matter because the phone works on bluetooth and is hidden away.

2. Keep the land line at home in order to make and receive calls.

3. Keep DirecTv for trouble-free real-time viewing of 987 channels in HD on a 42" screen.

4. Use a Macbook Pro on WiFi from Time Machine on the land line DSL for a fast and reliable internet connection.

5. Play my iTunes and photos on TV via the Apple TV in full surround sound.

6. Use my non-receptive, partially dead-screened 2G iPhone to play iTunes through the car's stereo (now hot with my home-made sub).

7. Maybe an iTouch in the future to get info on the road at WiFi spots.

8. Wait for the problems to be solved and then buy an iPhone G17.

It just works. So much better, actually.

So what you mean to say is that it didn't fix the issue like you said here? Are you still losing signal (even if not completely) when grounding the bottom left corner?

You're going to get peoples hopes up if you confirm it works and it really doesn't! :p;)

Ha! Epic Fail for the retarded public! Apple FTW.

Reset network settings to fix a network issue!?!?! OH MY GOD WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT!?!?!?!?

ok, so whats the next thing to whine about?

So if it was soooo obvious why didnt you pipe up earlier

I did it and still having the issue... But then again I am the retarded public.

if mobile safari see's that you have gizmodo in your browsing history then you will be affected by the reception bars issue. Apple is punishing Gizmodo through its readers.

i dont have an iphone 4. I am waiting for white when the bondi adhesive has had time to dry and they post iOS4.0.1 that auto resets Network settings every 30 minutes.

I got to admit it's gotten much better. Right now before resetting network settings I would have 1 bar, I have 4 now. So it's working one way or another.

ok, just got mine and absolutely love it!
No discoloration, no signal declines, nada! (except for usual AT&T poor reception in my building)

Well it seems a little inconsistent but it's def better now than before. Before I would go to 1 bar everytime now it's mostly on 3 bars and once in awhile it goes back to 1 but then back to 3. So ultimately this works great.

Hi.

First time long time.

I did not have this issue last night when I received the phone, but now it has cropped up. When I hold the phone my bars drop to one.

I just had two dropped calls in an area where my 3G had great reception (the two calls were from Apple tech support, to add insult to injury).

Try doing the reset network settings. It helped me a lot. I did have 2 drop calls in an area that I did not before I did the reset network, hopefully that will help the dropping of calls. Report back if it helped.

a quick fix

I received my i4 yesterday and did not notice any problems until I started reading this forum (thanks guys). My phone drops signal strength when holding the phone in my left hand, like many who have reported.
I had a extra piece of Invisible Shield screen protector and cut a thin strip to match the thickness of the stainless steel antenna band. I attached it to the band from the lower volume button, proceeding downwards and wrapped it around the bottom of the phone, ending at the speaker (or microphone) hole. I can hold the phone now without any degradation of signal strength. This will last until I get some cool case (which doesn't exist yet).

Thank you for the tip. That seems to mitigate, but not completely alleviate the problem. I'll pass the word along.

I knew I wasn't crazy. It does help though it is not perfect. A big thanks to the guy that called the Apple store and mentioned on the forum the reset network setting.

Why would you settle for this defect? You should be pissed off at this, not saying I'm fine with it. Its a design failure. A case or shield should be temperory, not a permanent solution.

This. Even though I am getting a case I am still going to demand this gets fixed. Its total BS.

Dvt

Remember that guy that lost the prototype unit ?

He actually had some bumper around it to conceal it's true nature (namely being an iPhone prototype).

That being said, I recon it is very well possible, Apple did not perform the Design Verification Test properly. They should have tested the device without bumpers....

(with bumpers , less signal loss due to no skin contact.)

People have suggested this - apparently it works for some, not all.

Didn't work for me. I don't see how it would help either, your are physically causing a signal drop by touching the device, resetting the network settings shouldn't fix that. And for me, it didn't.

I don't see how it would help either since it mostly just resets wifi network preferences, just repeating what some have said.

Exactly. It doesn't work - I've reset settings multiple times (once to get my microcell to show up, once to get facetime to stop "Waiting for activation," once because Apple told me to, etc.)

Two phones, both reliably lose all their bars and go to "Searching..." if I palm the phone so the left corner is nestled in between my left thumb and fingers. Doesn't matter if I'm starting with a 3-bar AT&T signal or a 5-bar microcell signal and I'm standing 3 feet from the microcell. Shorting the antennas results in actual signal loss that results in actual call failures.

New Issue

I don't know exactly where to write this (admins feel free to move this somewhere else) but check this out. In the older iPhones you could put someone on speaker, play a song through iPod and you could talk to someone on speaker and you could hear the music coming out of the speakers and the other person could hear the song thats coming out of your speakers. With the iPhone 4 if you play a song while on speaker talking to someone they DO NOT hear the music no matter what (which is kool) BUT the music quality is AWFUL! Someone with an iPhone 4 check it out. Call someone, put your phone on speaker, play a song and see how AWFUL the quality is and also notice that the other person does not hear the music. It has to be the noise canceling mic. This sucks cause now you can't prank people would sound boards. =-\
