This fix worked for me. My question is, did bad network settings get installed when I sync'd to my computer?
I will keep testing and report back if it didn't .. but I was really about to head back to AT&T tomorrow and give them the phone back until this was fixed.
I can't see how something like this would get past Apple...
Can someone actually prove they're an engineer and use a multimeter on the iPhone4 to check for impendence and/or short circuit issues?
I'm going to strap mine on before I go to the Apple Store....
New Issue
I don't know exactly where to write this (admins feel free to move this somewhere else) but check this out. In the older iPhones you could put someone on speaker, play a song through iPod and you could talk to someone on speaker and you could hear the music coming out of the speakers and the other person could hear the song thats coming out of your speakers. With the iPhone 4 if you play a song while on speaker talking to someone they DO NOT hear the music no matter what (which is kool) BUT the music quality is AWFUL! Someone with an iPhone 4 check it out. Call someone, put your phone on speaker, play a song and see how AWFUL the quality is and also notice that the other person does not hear the music. It has to be the noise canceling mic. This sucks cause now you can't prank people would sound boards. =-\
Why on earth would I want to do that?
I hope they fix this. I really do. If Apple doesnt?? Then I"ll prob make a video myself just repeating the same thing all over again and put it up on youtube once my new iPhone arrives. I'll repeat just placing the tip of my index finger right over that small lower slit/section on the phone just so ppl can see that its not the grip but the phone itself.
But Mr. Jobs? You guys did really did create a really outstanding impressive fine piece of art of a device truely. Just please fix taht small section on the new iPhones for us. Afterall ...... its supposed to be a Phone before anything else.
Apparently, an early batch had shipped without the necessary non-conductive coating, which solves the problem.
Anyone who received a phone without the coating will be able to swap it for one that does.
Did someone else hear this from Apple technical support or any other source?
I really hope this is the cause and swapping my iPhone for a later batch fixes the issue.

Update on the reception issue from my buddy who has been hitting his head against the wall:
Got off the phone with Apple. They're sending me a new one overnight. They said they're aware of the issue, and it has something to do with a missing protective coating on some of the parts....
BTW, Apple has amazing support. Friendly, knowledgeable, professional. They really do take care of you. Every time, in my experience.
Did someone else hear this from Apple technical support or any other source?
I really hope this is the cause and swapping my iPhone for a later batch fixes the issue.
Yes.
He just asked if someone else heard the same thing....besides you...and you said yes. are you two different persons?

Yes, that quote was from another user on the forum.
You're responding to what someone on this forum said, that does not qualify as apple technical support or any other source...he is asking if anyone else actually called into technical support and heard it from a reputable source...
He asked, "Did someone else hear this from Apple technical support or any other source?"
Someone else did, and the question was answered.
no-one seems to be addressing the question of how far I need to hold my new iPhone from my tin-foil hat in order to reduce interference?
The official advice is to "avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band".
1. someone on this forum said they heard that.
2. someone else asked, "did anyone else hear that from a different source?"
3. you said that you did but you really just heard it from the original poster.
please explain how that is a different source?
