My 3GS does the same thing when I hold it in my right hand, but not my left. I think everyone is just pointing out a realitivly common thing. Depending on how you hold radios of almost any type you effect their signal in some way. Get over it.

I won't be using a case on myne when I get it this evening.

Actually, and I'm not trying to be a smart aleck here, the other possibility is that not everyone is reproducing the issue in the same way. Those that are not reading these forums in detail are thinking it has to do with the whole rim of the phone. In actuality, the problem comes when touching the seam between the top metal portion and bottom metal portion on the left side of the phone. This completes a circuit that causes interference signal drop. This was done on all five of the phones presently in my office.

If you don't believe me, go find a place where you have a strong signal and press hard on that seam. You'll see your signal drop.

Woah, there... press hard? If it is a simple conductivity issue, you shouldn't have to press hard to make it happen. Electricity doesn't care how hard you press. Just touching should would be enough. I'm wondering if you are pressing hard enough to deform the shape and cause something inside to short?

Just tossing out some theories, like everyone else in here today...

That is absolutely ridiculous, and if it were anyone but Apple, the very kind of thing Steve Jobs would scoff at as poor engineering, lack of attention to details, etc. "If you have to tell the customer how to hold the phone, you've failed."

Glad I decided to hold off on this one, hopefully they'll have it fixed by the time the mythical Verizon model appears.

A quote from iPad: "There is no wrong way to hold it!" :D

My signal drops also... when holding lower left.
Call me crazy but I feel electricity coming through when Im holding it in my left hand.

HEY GUYS, SORRY TO TYPE IN CAPS BUT I WANT PEOPLE TO SEE THIS MESSAGE.

I CALLED APPLE AND THEY TOLD ME TO TO RESET THE NETWORK SETTINGS TO FIX THIS ANTENNA ISSUE.

SO FAR, IT APPEARS TO BE WORKING.

GO TO SETTINGS. THEN GENERAL, THEN SCROLL TO RESET ALL THE WAY IN THE BOTTOM, THEN RESET NETWORK SETTINGS.

I've touch the atenna several times now and the signal bar is still at five bars, let me know if it works,

thx,

manny

Unfortunately, this did not fix the issue for me.

different electrical currents?

Could it have something to do with the individual persons electrical current? i know someone who cannot wear any digital watches because they die weeks after being worn everyday. Weird but true...so maybe the ppl who are encountering this have high currents in their bodies that affect the phones? if that is the case, Apple will not be able to correct this hence why the bumper cover/case works in alleviating the issue. This has been around since 2008 with 3G's and then 3GS's and iphone 4 is a completely new design so i think it maybe something more than just a software issue or display issue. Hey Steve Jobs cant fix ppl so lets see. I on the other had have not encountered the issue with any of my iphones (2g thru 3GS) so lets see once i get my hand on an iPhone 4. Any thoughts? thanks.

Can someone with an iphone 4 hand the unit to several other ppl to see if the results are the same? thanks.

Field Test Mode

Its is unfortunate that IOS4 has removed the FieldTest mode where you could really see what was going on. It was previously accessible via *3001*123453#* where you could actually detect the dB strength of the signal you were receiving. Anyone managed to re-enable this app on a jail broken phone?

Dont have this issue at all

I dont have this problem at all and cannot replicate it on my phone, maybe some of the early shipments were defective, glad I stood in line for my reserved phone now.

You mean to tell me that by COMPLETELY covering the antenna with an inch of bone and flesh, it affects the quality of reception?

THIS IS LUDICROUS!!!!!

edit: I guess this means it'll drop calls if I accidentally swallow the damn thing?

Your point about conductivity is spot on, and precisely the reason I suggested pressing hard. But when I wrote hard I meant firmly enough to make sure that you're connecting the two pieces of metal with the same piece of skin. If you have small or oddly-shaped fingers, you may not actually be pressing against both sides and actually completing the circuit. My point here, though, as per my first post up on page two, is that your flesh is completing a circuit when it is touching both pieces of metal on the side. It doesn't need to be the whole side, just that connection.

You're crazy. That's just the iPhone 4's awesomeness transferring into you.... or it's Apple's reality distortion field sending subliminal messages to your brain... there is no signal problem...there is no signal problem...you want to buy a bumper...you love apple...defend apple...

Apple just needs to give everyone a free bumper case.

Exactly! Remember when the first Nano came out.....didn't they start supplying a little sleve with it at some point because it was proven the glass scratched too easily? It would be cool if they threw in a white bumper with the white model, and a black one with the black model.

I am in NYC. I can confirm this happens in this area when holding the phone in my right hand index and middle finger wrapped around to left side of phone. Signal starts to diminish a few second after to one bar sometimes no bars.

This really is a bad omen. I did buy a bumper but you know what, they suck! Not only does it take away from the design but it sticks out so the glass is no longer A seamless experience.

I for one do not like them and feel that this would not be a solution apple would look to. Were talking a recall on a massive scale if this proves to be not something that they can fix with some sort of software update. Not at all sure how that would work not being a technician or of it is at all possible buy this is very bad news.

If we find out they do change something when the white cpm's out they're going to have q lot of very angry first scooters on their hands, lime over a million!
