Apple has made a lot of things for style purposes.
Maybe not recently, aside the colors of the iPods.
But look at all their designs back in the day.
The cube, the clamshell iBook, the colorful e-Macs.
I don't think that this design is too far out of Apple's realm,
maybe you just have some set of what their style/theme is.

those buttons look like they're outlined on the case, do they not?
i could be wrong, but it looks that way to me.
kindof how the Macbook battery indication button is made on InCase hardshells.
still able to push them in, and use the buttons through the plastic. Don't need them to be cut out and exposed.

Due to it's texture it looks like a firm silicon case or a snug fitting plastic case but those buttons are definitely covered.

i know that they are covered, but i don't think it's one solid piece that covers them. i think there's a cut outline in the plastic to where you can push the actual plastic in like the button itself.

Style, yes. But Apple's style? Not really. Show me another Apple product that deliberately uses seams for style. I'm with others who think that the sides are not part of the final design. God, how can things like huge rounds buttons even pass Ives' design standards? So very un-Apple like.

All previous iphone's have had a dual ended rocker switch for volume up and down on a pivot, which makes volume adjustment more tricky, so I think separate switches / buttons are a better idea on the new iPhone plus it fits in with the aluminum / glass design of the phone. I thing plastic chrome buttons like on the 3GS would look too out of place.

Actually the top seem acts as a separator separating the headphone Jack (music) from the rest of the top which kind of says this part is for music - subtle I agree but seems to work.

Why would they need to do that? The headphone jack is all they need to announce that 'this part is for music'.

It's been covered many times before but, unfortunately, I think that we're getting an iPhone with seams, screws and circular buttons. Have seen too many examples and images of parts now to hold onto any conviction that the design might change before release.

this iphone reminds me more of a small mechanical machine,
rather than just some kind of device.

i mean, that kind of look, if that makes sense.
well crafted piece of engineering, rather than some sleek plastic phone.

Yes it's like a lug / grummet fit that goes straight over the buttons yet full functionality remains in place. The might be caps but these could fall off, so I think these are part of the whole case.

TomTom Car Kit

I just hope the current TomTom Car Kit is still fitting. I won't spend another 150 bucks for that.

I don't see anything but the buttons. I think you are overanalyzing an image that is only 500x300 pixels.

alright there were several macrumor members who swore they will not buy the next iphone because it 'looks ugly'

stand up before us and not be a coward

tell us that u still stand by your word!

:p

Even if a case is actually produced it might not be for an actual product. I was looking for a new case for my iPod touch yesterday, and the shop (which is the local authorized Apple dealer) has iPod touch cases that has a center hole for the camera.

To me it seems like it's an industrial design which separates different areas for functionality simply by using a groove plus adding a couple of seams breaks away from a "brick" look where everything is one piece. I know this is completely against the grain but maybe the seams are for some hardware add ons later. Steve jobs always has a few trucks up his sleeve.

I really liked the other iPhone 4 protoype. It has wider holes for the speaker/mic on the bottom and lacks the ever so hated screws. The camera lens on the back seems larger as well.

Here she is:

Maybe the prototype shown in this video is the "back-up" iPhone 4 prototype that we've seen so often these past few weeks. We are possibly getting the worse of the two for production reasons, similar to the 3GS situation last year.

I'm saying the buttons are visible and the case seems to completely cover / seal the yet they retain full functionality.
Again, if this is a hard plastic case I doubt that those buttons will "retain full functionality".

It's only a telephone, just use the damn thing and let it get scratched...in two years, get a new one! :)

I never understand why people ruin the design of the iPhone by sticking plastic around it. Utter madness.
