It's funny to see people saying "oh I expected this." or writing like it's (only 4S is)confirmed 100%.
Has Apple officially posted somewhere that "this yr our new product is this" . ????

Regardless i'll be upgrading. Just sold my iPhone 4 for £325 i won't get even close to that if i wait for iPhone 6.

Samsung's Lawsuit

Y'know, what if the super secrecy has something to do with the Samsung case? Remember how they requested iPhone 5 and iPad 3 design specs in their first discovery request?

1. That makes me think Samsung doesn't believe this will be "only" a 4s update.

2. Given how much interest Samsung has showed, that alone might provide extra incentive for Apple to very careful not to out the phone too soon.

As many keep saying, the one thing that has never made sense is the move to iOS5, the A5 chip....but then calling it the 4s. I have to agree that everything besides the leaks suggests it will be an iPhone 5 (and maybe that's what they'll call an updated iPhone 4 anyway...)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

If it's too good to be true it isn't true. And the iPhone 5 design we have all seen pictures of is certainly too good to be true for today.

I do think that after the iPhone 4 bar loss and the leaks then Apple has likely locked the 5 down heavily. Even the fact the Apple Town hall is being used for an announcement could be down to security. They would care less about 4s parts being leaked, and would probably welcome the diversion as well as posts like this. I have worked with enough retail companies to be 99% sure that these are just placeholders.

The glass and metal design is still very nice but the problem apple has made for themselves is perceived design innovation. People like new toys and rolling out the same design after 16 months is not going to develop huge sales like the iPad2 has.

I have an unlocked uk model so can choose what ever service to use and no lock in. So unless there is some killer feature that an S model has that won't run on iOS5 on a 4 I cannot see may people upgrading. I won't

But Bring out a 5 with the new design and bigger screen and I am there.

I'm a 3GS user and I was looking to upgrade to the next iPhone when it came out. I can tell you that the iPhone 4S does NOT entice me. The 3GS isn't as fast, it isn't brand spanking new, but it would be a lot smarter to wait for something more than a 4S. It seems as if Apple are throwing us the leftovers and not really caring. The "average joe" would look at the iPhone 4S and think "it's just an iPhone 4 right?" Even I look at the 4S and still think that because after all the spec bump in the 4S will have almost no effect.
I am in the same boat. I have a 3GS and had the 3G before that. The 3GS was a massive jump over the 3G because the 3G was so ram limited (and as I jailbreak mine, ram is needed for backgrounding). The 4 has no such limitations that I am aware of, so an S upgrade is pretty pointless as far as I can see. I never saw any reason to upgrade to the 4 and the same goes for the 4s. If it's just a speed bump then I will probably wait for the 5 or until the 3GS dies (at which point I would replace with the cheaper 4 rather than 4s)

My thoughts

My thoughts on this subject.

1. There is no way I believe Apple let the cat out of the bag on their new product by not realizing it was in their beta.

2. I am an iPhone 4 user and if all it is is a spec bumb then I will not upgrade. I don't see the need and I think a lot of other iPhone 4 users will feel the same way.

3. I am not switching to any other smartphone. I love apple products and will continue to use them.

4. I may be wrong, but I don't believe apple will not come out with a totally new iPhone (redesigned). When not just tech blogs but news sites are posting articles about this, it is going to affect their stock if they just do a spec bumb and the perception of apple will be that they are getting behind other companies in the phone department.

5. Let's hope for video streaming so we all can be surprised or disappointed together.

6. Yes, iOS is great, but to get all of the youth to come out with money and buy a new phone it is going to have a cool factor to it and NO the iPhone 4 is no longer cool to them. It's been out for over a year and it's not as cool. Parents are going to look at an iPhone 4s and say that is the same phone that you have. It needs a cool factor to appeal to the youth of today which is the ones who will be requesting this at christmas, not adults. If we want it we go buy it.

Just my thoughts.

didn't get the 4, was glad i didn't get the 4 due to the antenna thing, and if anyone says 'it doesn't really exist', we just ordered a set for work and they all get horrendously crap signal and drop out all the time where the 3GS' didn't.

Funny. I work in an area with a weak AT&T signal. Now that I have sold my iPhone 4 in anticipation for this Tuesday, I am really missing it's antenna. I have tried a 1st Gen and a 3GS at work and both do not pull in a signal as well as the iPhone 4. Steve jobs was sort of correct on the antenna. If you don't want to lose signal, don't grip it.

If there's no change in design, i'm 100% sticking it out with the 3GS till next year. I don't NEED iOS 5.

You are talking as if the 3GS isn't getting iOS 5. It is.

I'm just tired of the constant "if you don't agree with Apple you're a hater" and "if you agree with Apple you're a fanboy" mentality that is prevalent around here. Your post, even "tongue in cheek" doesn't help the situation.

Be amused all you want, Apple is not perfect and some whining is to be expected. If you don't like it and it "amuses" you, keep it to yourself or ignore those posters. Don't call them haters. If they "hated" Apple, obviously they wouldn't be pissed because Apple is not delivering a product.

First, I have every right to post drivel, subject to forum rules, as the next guy (that includes you) so please don't tell me to "keep it to myself." This is a "forum". Look up the word if you are unsure what it means. My post was not personal to any particular poster. One would have to infer they were being called out.

Second, there are "professional" Apple 8HRs on this board, and for some time now, it's no secret. I'll call them what they are -- but remember I did not give that label to any particular poster.

Third, I've been happily buying Apple products probably since before you were in diapers, and I've been posting at MR almost since its inception. I've had plenty of good and bad things to write about Apple. It's a company, and not above criticism. But sometime people's expectations get ahead of reality. Often that is the case at MR.

Fourth, there is no reason to get "pissed" at a company for not making a product or being slow to release it. Companies vie for your money. They aren't lovers or friends or family. They just want your money. There is no shame is going to another manufacturer if your preferred company doesn't make the product you want but another does. That's how business works.

Atleast iphone 4 owners like myself won't get all jealous seeing the new iphone 4S ... cos i remember when i got iphone 4 .. the iphone 3gs owners gave me dirty looks ... haha ... Bazinga! biaatches!

The problem is that in your haste to point out these "professional" Apple 8HRs as you call them, you're broad sweep a lot of people that aren't haters at all. That diminishes the atmosphere around here.

I'm talking as if i've seen what ios4 did to the 3G.

If you think that ios5 won't bring the 3GS to a grinding halt for no reason other than notification centre, and to force you to upgrade (which i can live without) then your very optimistic :)

64gb - nice!
I also hope this means the iPod touch will be jumping to 128gb (unless the iPhone is going to use 2 storage chips like the iPod usually does).

On a serious note, does nyone here know if a redesign was possible but scrapped at the last minute? I'm really curious to know what all of those cases that got leaked are for. Surely the makes had to believe SOMETHING was in the pipeline before spending the money to actually manufacture them in quantity. Just curious really.

Imagine yourself standing at a toilet urinal and you are holding your macana to pee. Same concept.

wow you must have an incredibly wide and thin macana....do Trojan even do ones for that shape and size?

... if Samsung had known what the new iPhone was going to be then they wouldn't have asked to see it. iPhone 5 does not mean a re-designed iPhone. It means the fifth generation iPhone. Samsung simply asking to see an unreleased product isn't noteworthy nor does it give any indication that Apple planned on changing the design.

I love it when folks say "im going Android if Apple don't do what I want". "I'm going to get a Samsung Galaxy S2 if I don't see an iphone 5!"

Go on, do it, I dare you. Trust me on this one, Android sucks balls. I had an iPhone 4, but I just 'fancied a change' so I sold it and got a Windows 7 mobile phone (not android I know). It was terrible, I almost cried. Then I sold that and got a Galaxy S (S2 looked to big). I still have it and I swear some days I want to drown it in dog turd. It crashes, it's slow, the widgets hog memory and cpu and I am constantly having to "force quit" or just remove the battery.

In the UK we have had the S2 for ages now and it's a big, poorly built, thin piece of plastic. The USA couldn't wait to get their hands on it, well don't beleive the hype. Its crap.

My iphone 3g, 3gs and 4 never had any problems.

If Apple realease an iPhone 4s tomorrow i'll be buying it. Why? - It will be better than any phone on the market. Again.

You say that as if that's a bad thing. "Speed bump" or not, the new phone will still be one of the, if not the best phones available. It seems absurd to be all butthurt because this year, Apple might not give you something they never actually promised to give you this year anyway.

No, I agree. The new iPhone will undoubtedly be better than the current iPhone. But, most the perceived improvements will just be a function of time, not improvements that Apple is actively improving. As time goes by, mobile devices get faster processors, more RAM, more megapixels, etc.

That said, for anyone who currently has a 3GS, upgrading is a no-brainer. They will be getting a fine phone. For those of you who just sold their iPhone 4, buying the new phone is an improvement too, but for different reasons (iPhones don't age well. My iPhone 4 - bought on launch day - really feels old and slow. Even buying a brand-new iPhone 4 would be an improvement).

Yes, Apple is throwing you the leftovers. Not all customers are treated equally. There are 2 tracks. One that will get a new phone very 2 yrs when contracts expire. Another that gets the spec bump version very 2 yrs when contracts expire.

What new hardware features will the rumored 4S have that would not have made sense to use with iOS 4 (on the new hardware)?

Since iOS4 works on the iPad 2 surely the iPhone 4S could have as easily run on iOS 4 too - and later gotten the upgrade to iOS 5.
Not the first time that new iOS versions had features that only work on the very latest hardware.

IOS4 was built to run smoothly with the limited spec of the iphone 4. It doesn't use more resource than what the iphone 4 can supply, therefore giving you a speedy and smooth experience. IOS4 on the new iphone would not use the new resource very well, which would make it seem that the hardware is lacking. Therefore, they wanted both to come out together.

The Galaxy S2 works well for me. Granted it is plastic, but it has survived the washing machine. The iPhone way too common around here - everyone seems to have one.
