After reading this thread, I'm not taking any chances.

I ordered my 4S around 2pm on Friday by speaking with an Apple agent on the phone. She assured me that I would be able to change my shipping address on the apple website once the order is placed (I too am on a family plan and living in NY while my primary account holder is in CA). Once I received the order number and it went through the Apple system, I was able to edit the shipping address to my NY apartment.

Apple still claims my phone is "Preparing for Shipment," but I'm not taking any chances. I logged onto my family's account through AT&T and changed the billing address to match my NY apartment. Now all (Shipping, Credit Card Billing, and AT&T billing) my addresses are the same.

I would suggest anyone who is afraid of cancellation because of a simple address difference to do the same.

I also just checked AT&T's billing site, and it shows my new contract as 10/07/2011 - 10/07/2013.

My previous contract ended 8/1/2011. I'd loooooove for them to cancel my order and then try to lock me in for two years without letting me have the device that extended the contract...
Actually a contract change is a good sign that your order is progressing correctly. AT&T does not have wharehouses full of iPhone 4S units just sitting around. They are waiting for their carrier shipments from Apple just like Sprint and Verizon. Since each carrier has their own distribution systems so they receive bulk orders from Apple.

This has happened every year since the 3G, large bulk delivers from Apple will arrive at the one of the AT&T Distribution Centers. My orders always ship from Ft. Worth Texas. Last year my iPhone 4 arrived at my door before the tracking email arrived.

Just like Apple.com orders, there are many, many thousands of iPhones that show as Processing on the Apple site when they are already in Alaska waiting to clear customs and pointed south. The Apple thread is full of individuals that have found their tracking numbers based on their phone number and have been tracking their iPhones from China since yesterday.

There are many, many thousands of inbound iPhone 4S units in Alaska that will for the most part transit to either Louisville KY (UPS) or Memphis (FedEx) for hub distribution. Some locations will be direct ship from Alaska

Same boat here. Cancelled because of too many orders. After getting the run around and Apple blaming me for cancelling my order, I just ordered another and replied to the email with the information. Planning on calling tomorrow to check and complain.

I have not been so notified, but after reading through this thread, I'm confident my order has been cancelled, too.

I just checked my bank account and the charge is gone. The Apple Store still shows "Preparing for Shipment". I ordered through the Apple Store early Friday morning using a debit card (which is the only card I own). My universal billing address is a PO Box, but I always have items shipped to my home's physical address.

I've purchased a $4,000 television, billed to the PO Box, and shipped to my home and not an eyelash was batted. But ordering an iPhone? Nooooooooo.

The very same thing happened to me in 2010 with the iPhone 4 pre-order. I ended up never getting one, and have my 3GS in front of me, battered and held together with electrical tape.

I'm off-contract, and will be canceling my AT&T account within the week.

Just to let everyone know, the charge on everyone's bank account is just a "hold."

They always check to make sure you have money in the account first.

They place a temporary "hold" on your funds (they don't actually take them out). The "hold" on the account last for 3 - 4 days. Usually an item will ship next day or two - sending the transaction through, and the money will be released to Apple.

In this case - since the phones are being shipped later than 3 - 4 days, the hold on the funds will drop causing the money to be available to you again.

Once they actually ship, they'll charge your card, taking the money out completely.

Not everyones hold will drop, it depends when your phone actually ships.

And for reference, I paid with a debit card - with a different billing address - different shipping address - and mine shipped just fine.

Similar situation here, cancelled because had two orders, the duplicate was cancelled Thursday only but after the order being in the processing state got an email today stating it's cancelled, was told to reorder and reply to email, have done that but highly doubt anything is going to happen.

I made two calls to Apple today, within 10 minutes of eachother. The first Apple rep told me there was absolutely no way that I would have my phone on Friday and was pretty unhelpful. The second Apple rep told me that the request for expedited shipping has been put in, but that the shipping date won't update unless it is approved. I really have no clue what is going on at this point...

Did anyone else have better luck with Apple? I had asked to speak to someone that would be able to help me to get a phone on Friday or speak with the people that sent the email out about my cancellation, and was told that there was nobody that I could talk to.

edit: I just check my order and it reads:
Ships: 1 - 2 Weeks
Delivers Oct 21 - Oct 28 via Expedited Shipping

...which is the same timeframe as before but it says Expedited instead of Standard. This doesn't seem helpful at all!

Huh, mine says October 24-31 via Standard still :\

Well, on the AT&T website my upgrade eligibility has changed and my contract is now listed as ending 10/07/2013, so I think that's a good sign. Still nothing in UPS or FedEx, and the charge has not yet showed up on my credit card (though the preauthorization clearly has been done).

I ordered through apple.com and then called them to change my shipping address. I even changed the person's name I was shipping it to. Everything has gone off without a hitch, and my phone shipped on the 9th. So not everyone had a problem. I did use credit and not debit.

It won't happen man. Although I do wish you the best of luck, the system they have in place seems to be more of for general situations and not the scenario of a brand new iPhone on launch day. But hey, at least you do see, AT&T is full of crap. I just made sure to have myself added as an authorized user and have all the appropriate info. I'll resolve it tomorrow when the lines are up again no matter how many people I have to talk to.

@lyrastar: Same here.

For the iPhone 4 they were taking in store reservations, so it was easy for a rep to set you up with one if your pre-order failed, They aren't doing that this year though so i doubt anyone will mention any help available in this fashion. Hope everything works for the best for you though!

Looks like my iphone shipped without any issues with using a credit card with a different name and address to the account holder's.

My order got cancelled and quite frankly the apple sales team doesn't know why, and all they could offer to do was process me a new order to ship weeks after release date. They said it was because AT&T is strict on ordering terms and because the shipping/billing is different than the account info, and I have a NY number, they thought it might be fraud but gave no specific reason. I'm about to call AT&T about it. (FYI: I did order on apple.com) I just have some questions.

Could I get them to reserve me an in-store copy? Given I recieved no information prior to my order being cancelled until when it was supposed to ship. And the order went through perfectly fine in the first place up until this point.

What time should I show up on release date given I do ultimately get screwed over? I work night shift so it's not a problem. But I do want to be absolutely sure I get an iPhone. I live in a generally well-populated area.

ur screwed pretty much

to guarentee yourself one id get in line around 8 am on thursday

8pm wed

I'd just like to give a big thanks to Apple for being awesome. I called and got transferred to a manager, who in-turn contacted my local Apple store and got him to reserve me an iPhone for any time I want release day.

Do note though, he did mention he's tried this a few times before with people who had similar issues and each time the retail store manager turned him down. Props to him for trying, and I'm just thankful it worked for me.

For those of you who had to re-submit your order: he did say they had a very dedicated ops team that is working on all wrongly cancelled orders to get your iPhone's to you on or as close as possible to release day. Good luck to you guys.

Congrats! I wish I had an Apple store here so I could try that. I am contemplating canceling my Apple order and trying my luck at AT&T early Friday, as I live in a small-ish town that isn't very tech savvy. But if I do that I would likely get the 4 if they are out of 4s's... and then I might be sad about it later.

If I had a delivery date changed to next week sometime that would be ok - the 24-31 is just sad considering I got up so early so I could have it the 14th (and it doesn't help that my husband just got his new Galaxy S2 today :p )

I ordered my phone with a debit visa and it has gone through.

For clarity AT&T requires:

1. The shipping address matches the one they have on record
2. The billing address of the card you use must match that of the billing address on record

Many places do let you change shipping but in my experience, AT&T has some security concerns with this....

If you managed to get it through...great but you should not be surprised at a cancellation if you're addresses dont match or you are buying one via the account of someone else.

Not to be doom or gloom but I would not count on it. Get to the store right away so you have time to argue with the manager and ensure they dont sell out for the day.

Mine was the same way and then went prepared for shipment and I couldn't cancel my order so I could get in line and wait tonight. Called apple and they couldn't do anything, couldn't cancel the order so my account was available for upgrade again.

Then a few hours later I get an email saying it would show up by the 14th.

It was 1-2 weeks with the 19th-26th up until that email. The tracking number doesn't work so who knows what will actually happen.

I did call AT&T and told them I was going to cancel that order and the rep made my account eligible for upgrade in case I need to get in line tonight :)

I checked and I'm eligable again on my account.
