Wow.

4 million suckers got dragged into purchasing the same phone 2 years running.

Only to find that battery has gone backwards.

Most of you geniuses dont realise that battery should get better with performance gains.

Take intel for example.

Every generation the power usage goes down with performance going up.

Basically the A5 is just a clocked up CPU with a better GPU.

iPhone 4S = Cash Cow.

Lower costs and higher margins make stock markets very happy.

My iPhone 4 has gotten faster with IOS 5 so i doubt the performance gap everyone is seeing is all to do with the A5.

Ill wait for the iPhone 5 when a real successor comes out that warrants a £500 upgrade

Some day you will understand what User Experience means and why it's so important.

Today isn't it.

I would just like to see what happens to the battery life on the Iphone 5 or 6 if they put a larger screen on it and put a quad core on it and run it under 4G LTE. I know that a lot of people want a larger screen, but that WILL drain the battery even faster.
If people are so concerned with batterylift, Just put a Juice Pack on it if you want to extend the battery time. They even have Solar Powered ones that store battery energy.

BTW: The CPU is not Clocked up. (www.extremetech.com) They have ran benchmarks on it. It is actually running at 800 mhz dual core and the benchmarks on GLBench was 73.1 vs 11.2 on the Iphone 4. The Geekbench composite score was 560 vs 281 for the Iphone 4. The IPAD2 outbenched both.

Except I never posted what you attribute to me.

Why not do some digging and post my actual words instead?

All you've done is exaggerated my posts massively (and quite inaccurately) in order to support your personal attack.

At least use my own words against me, so you can a) acknowledge and prove authorship, and b) avoid lying.

Wow. Let me address your misinterpretations and sensitivities very precisely.

"Except I never posted what you attribute to me"

Response: I did not quote you (hence the lack of ""). The paragraphs in question are very reasonable equivalents to your blind Apple biases.

"Why not do some digging and post my actual words instead?"

Response: Your posting history overwhelmingly confirms your disposition to side with Apple. Im holding back laughter at the thought of this being disputable. If you'd like to push this further, I can and will compile a lengthy list of posts in which you've defied reason to support Apple's decisions.

"All you've done is exaggerated my posts massively (and quite inaccurately) in order to support your personal attack."

Response: Ibid. In reference to my "personal attack" you're totally out of order. In no way did my post attach some kind of insult to you, other than stating the obvious bias you have for Apple.
Not one insult was within my post. By your logic then, I should also interpret some kind of personal attack from you...since you're implying plenty about my character in your misguided interpretations.

"At least use my own words against me, so you can a) acknowledge and prove authorship, and b) avoid lying."

Response: See responses above regarding using direct quotes. Regarding "acknowledge and prove authorship", those words were of my own creation. They were written to prove a point that all but yourself seem to understand.
Lastly, regarding "avoid lying", please inform me of ANY statement ive made of you that would vaguely resemble a lie. There are none.

For the record, I have no problem with you as a person. This is a forum, and by that definition there are going to be differing opinions. I relish them. Am I one to blindly support Apple at every turn? Absolutely not. Do I think theyre the best at what they do? 100%. You'll never see me denying Apple huge amounts of praise when its due.
For what its worth, I think you get unfairly beat up on the forums (even when your praise of Apple is COMPLETELY justified). In those cases (which is very often), youll have a +1 coming your way from toddybody. Stay well *LTD*, be true to your passions and have a wonderful evening.

I don't doubt it will get better with a few power cycles, but as of now, it's pretty terrible for me.

This is just normal usage. No calls, just texting and some Internet...

Well, I'll give it a few more days. I just went through the settings and it looks like a bunch of stuff (wifi, Bluetooth, location services, push email) was turned on that would cause such drain. I also had the screen brightness maxed out. After coming off a 3GS, I was so smitten with this screen, I couldn't bear to turn it down. LOL

Getting the 4GS after the 3GS is understandable, but it is still technically better to wait for the 5 because it won't be outdated for a long time. If the 5S comes out, it will just be faster. If the 6 comes out, it will take a long time to make.

But the 4GS will be outdated by the revolutionary 5 more quickly.

You couldn't get the 4S for whatever reason and you stuck waiting for the next iPhone. We get it.

Wait!

what sucks WAY MORE is the fact that I can't deactivate 3G at all!
Sorry, but WTF!!!

Here (at work) my 4S keeps switching between 1 bar 3G and five bars edge. What sense does that make?
The battery gets abused constantly trying to logon to the 3G net which I personally barely used before. I don't need the speed. At work I:
  • Check/send email
  • Check/send messages
  • call colleagues
  • check/edit calendar
  • use the calculator & camera every once in a while
What I want is maximum battery and not 3G network! My runtime due to constant (3G) network seeking is far lower than what it is for my colleagues with iPhones 4 that have 3G deactivated!

So the real comparison would be in an area where it keeps logging on and off of the 3G network. You'd see that it has WAY LESS runtime there, because the iPhone 4 can be told to not try and log on to 3G, the 4S can't :(

See;
Settings
General;
Network;
Enable 3G = off.

You are welcome!

I think in the smartphone era, people are getting used to plugging in their phones every night. The question is whether or not your phone is still alive at the end of the day when you're about the habitually plug it in. My iPhone 4 was (almost) always still kicking at the end of the day, without any charging during the day. People forget that when cell phones were new, batteries took all day to charge and lasted about 6 hours. There got to be a time when finally phones started lasting a LONG time (multiple days without charge) but then something happened. Phones all of a sudden became computers that make desktops from 10 years ago look like jokes. People still seem to expect the sky from their phone battery. Luckily, apple delivers in this category when compared with the competition.

My iPhone 4S seems to last through the end of the day, even though I have been using it a lot.

Compared to your average droid, this thing has awesome battery. It also happens to be the best phone out there.

Satisfied customer.

Main thing I was looking forward to with the 4S was a new battery, as the one in my 3Gs could barely make it through half a day of doing virtually nothing.

Set up the 4S from the 3Gs backup and was immediately disappointed as the battery seemed to have the exact same lousy behavior as the 3Gs. A few minutes of browsing and checking email after undocking from power in the morning would go down to 90% in a matter of minutes. Being in a holster on my hip at work doing nothing would be down to 50% by lunch.

Did a full restore to fresh iOS 5.0 two days back, and now the 4S behaves like a new phone with a new battery. Seems the restore from backup had some "memory" of bad battery behavior that got transferred to the new phone. Doesn't really make sense...perhaps some app I'm unaware of was sucking it dry? After the restore I pared down my app library significantly.

I'd give it a couple more cycles first. My phone did the exact same thing (down to an identical usage time!) the other day and then the next I had more usage and standby time and my battery was still at 60+%. It confused me but I'm not complaining.

in all seriousness this is ridiculous. The battery literally drains 1% every 2-3 minutes of usage. It reminds me of the problems I had when jailbreaking.

I even did the trusty battery calibration last night and its still terrible. Im really hoping Apple has a fix for this, whether it be software related or replacing my phone. :(

This is what I'm seeing too. I had 100% charge at 8am. It's not even 11am, after talking on the phone for a hour and a half, and I'm down to 12%.

WTF?

Even with those on you shouldn't get such drain

To all of you finding excuses... Take a look at new motorola RAZR. Kevlar 4.3 Super Amoled QHD, 4G LTE, 1.2 GHz dual core and guess what... 12.5h battery...

Yep... Not everybody is on regression... It's ok though. I know all you fanboys have no issues with 4S battery getting crappy #'s cause it's no big deal anyway... riiight??

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

does it do this down to 0%? i remember every new iphone it takes a month or so for the battery to be calibrated to report the right level. otherwise it will do crazy things like drop gradually and then 30% in a few minutes

yeah it went to 0% and shut itself off. One strange thing to note that makes me think its a software bug is when I reset Network Settings yesterday it restarted and my battery meter jumped up from 24% to 31% after it restarted.

Looks like the battery life is better in the relevant measures, except video play back which is 7% worse and standby which is 8 days instead of 12.

I wonder if the video playback they tested was at a resolution that the iPhone 4 could play without skips or glitches.

The standby time is more significant and looks like a decision on Apples part to run something additional during standby (possibly watching for signal on an additional antenna). I wonder if the difference between 8 days and 12 will turn out to matter to people.

Personally, longer talk time, better signal, and less battery per megabyte of download seems like a win to me.

Twice as bad as my old 3GS

I could at least get thru a day on my 3GS, but my new 4S is embarrassingly lacking. 100% charge at 8am, 38% by noon and almost no usage at all! Horrible!

I can usually get 2 or 3 days from my android phone. Moderate use, data off.

Maybe you guys should turn off 3G when you're not using it. I have a handy little drop-down menu with toggles for things like that.
