Coming from a 3GS, even if the 4S has "worse" battery life compared to a 4, I don't think I'll notice.

Why? Everything is done instantly. It seems like my 4S running iOS 5.0 is quicker than my 3GS was running 3.0. I tap something, it opens. No waiting for it to open. No staring at a blank screen while it loads the app.

Even if the 4S eats twice the battery, it's doing things in less than half the time for me.
That's great! So, basically, it means the 4S is so fast, you'll be done using it a lot sooner, so it doesn't matter if the battery is worse!

This is all dumb. The three measures by which battery is worse are 3G on ATT, WiFi, and video RECORDING.

ATT users are reporting higher 3G speeds on 4S than on 4. The WiFi is faster on 4S than on 4. Video Recording is significantly higher resolution on 4S than on 4. So what the measures should be are battery life per data transferred and battery life per video data recorded. If I can download the same App using less of my battery and in less time that's a win not a fail.

Meanwhile talk time and Facetime have improved battery life. So the 4S has BETTER battery life for talk time and BETTER battery life per download. This article is pure bunk.

Yeah. I do not understand what those idiots complain who have their iPhone 4S drain their batteries overnight. They were shooting better video and doing faster web browsing all night. What's there to complain?

If you read the original they show the media playback stats and those are lower too.

people still complain to complain...its a shame.

Don't you understand? It's because iPhone 4S plays video faster! :)

Plus, given the choice between faster and longer, most women would agree: Longer is better. :p

going from a 3gs to 4s. i hate this battery, espec with no ability to turn off 3g. im down to 58 percent battery. what things r eating up battery that could be shut off?

I don't know what people are doing to get horrible battery life. Good god!

From the iPhone 4 to the 4S, I'm getting pretty much exactly the same as I was getting on my 4, if it's draining quicker, it's probably because I'm using it more!

For those of you that keep having problems, backup your iPhone. Do a restore and set it up as a new phone. Voila, problem solved, so you lost a saved game or some text messages by doing this method... but it's worth trying if complaining doesn't help the battery life.

My battery life is outstanding on this thing! Even Siri agrees!

Same standby time and usage

For those of you that have the same usage and standby time...that's NOT good.
That is a bug of some app that is still running in the background and is making serious battery drain.

Try hard reset the phone when is at full charge so that you can check the usage time when you again just plug the phone in a charger.

If that doesn't help (hard reset) than restore your phone.

For the rest of you try giving the phone a couple of days so that the battery has 3-4 full cycle recharge. The battery in you new phone is also new.

My phone constantly switches between 2G and 3G on Sprint which is why it is down to 8% in 4 hours. Buyer beware for Sprint.. this is going to become a serious issue.

Thanks. I just looked and noticed that my Autolock was set to never. Now I dont recall that my screen was on for the entire night, but that surely would hurt battery life.

If you have the time, you might want to backup your current configuration, and then restore the phone to default settings. Use it for a couple days like that, and see what kind of mileage you get.

Conditioning the battery is overhyped. It doesn't actually increase the true capacity of the battery (in fact, discharging all the way usually decreases the max capacity). Conditioning just gives the OS a better picture of the real available capacity. So, it's good to do this once in awhile -- meaning every 6 months to a year.

i started the day at 7:30 AM with a fully charged 4s...by 3:30PM it was dead..and it was very light use..the problem is at work i have minimal service so if i sent a text the phone kept trying to send for about 20 mins before it would finally release...still sucks though

so you lost a saved game or some text messages by doing this method... but it's worth trying if complaining doesn't help the battery life.

That is unacceptable.

Apple needs to fix this crap.

At least with Android you can back up all your app data and text messages with Go SMS and Titanium Backup. On iOS you are basically screwed. Every problem I have had with my iPhone and iPad basically comes back to iTunes and their stupid restrictions and bugs with syncing.

Can people explain to me what they have running?

Can people explain to me what location services they have running? I heard people saying siri drains the battery in a matter of hours, but this is simply not true. I went the night without charging to see the idle battery drain, it was so insignificant that I can't even note on it. I figure since people have different location services running it must drain the crap out of the battery. I'm a moderate user and I don't notice any real difference between the battery lifes.

I know this is subjective to the user (I think this is one dumbass news update from macrumors), but I was just curious on why people's battery drains so much quicker than others when they claim they aren't even using the phone and the battery drains.

has anyone noticed the stand-by battery life comparison?

4s Batt is worse...

Moving from a 4 to a 4s, I have noticed a significant decrease in battery life. While my experience is more anecdotal, than well-documented experimentation, here are my observations:

  • I seem to drain North of 5%, for every 10 or so minutes of talking... actually, I'll bet I drain more like 7%, which is certainly more than I did on my 4
  • I didn't worry much about battery life with my 4, but I've now totally drained my batt 2x, already today
  • Last night, at midnight, I tole Siri to wake me up at 6am. The battery was at 43%, when I went to sleep. The alarm didn't go off, because the battery was dead... :(

I suspect my phone has something running on it that is negatively impacting battery life, but I pretty much have the same apps on it as I did on my 4. Otherwise, I love the 4s improvements. But I hope that a patch comes out soon... or, whatever app I have that's misbehaving, starts to behave better.

Oh, and my 4s is running noticeably hotter than my 4... what's up with that?

Restore works

I upgraded to the iPhone 4S from the iPhone 3GS and I noticed that the battery seems to drain much faster; even faster than a phone I've had 2 years.

I can't compare it to the iPhone 4, as this article did, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks the iPhone 4S drains the battery more.

I haven't tested it extensively enough to really make a firm conclusion. But I'll be interested in reading what other people observe in their day-to-day usage.

It has been picked up all over if you go into forums that with iOS5 update on older models and not purchased on an old device it:

A: Slows the device down to a staggering degree

B: Adds roughly 5-10GB of 'other' to the capacity.

C: Chews away at battery time

However:

A total fresh restore of the device will get rid of all these problems and improve the battery life for anyone having issues. i know because I had all the problem about. It is a pain doing a fresh restore them restore from last backup but it seems to be working.

Hope this helps :)

Engadget brings another interesting point of comparison to battery life issue. they tested video cameras on several phones and discovered that while shooting video iPhone 4S consumes much more power than iPhone 4. iPhone 4 was comparable in this regard to Samsung Galaxy SII.

3G is twice as fast...so yeah.

You guys realize that 3G is twice as fast (what other companies call 4G) on the iPhone 4S right? That would be why it uses a little more power.

He's just pointing out your guaranteed disposition to applaud Apple regardless of their decisions.

"Apple releases redesigned iPhone 5 with 4" screen and tapered aluminum design"

Way to go Apple. This is why the competition will never catch up. Apple will always be the leader in innovation, this phone proves that. They could have easily just given it the new A5 and improved cameras, but they didnt stop there. This new design really takes the iPhone to the next level...larger screen and consistent battery life is better than anything else out there.

Mean while, all the Android garbage is just doing spec bumps. Post PC-Era here we come.

"Apple releases iPhone 4S with A5 and improved camera"

Incredible. Apple really made the right choice here: Improve upon a perfect phone. Let's be honest, a redesign wasnt the best thing now. When all the competition is scrambling to release bigger and bigger phones, Apple stays away from a fad and delivers a perfect 10 again. The A5 and Siri are huge game changers. Pick out a coffin now Google/Microsoft/RIM.

Honest praise and criticism are essential to becoming the best you can be, and creating something truly special. If it starts with Apple, you totally forget that. Peace

Except I never posted what you attribute to me.

Why not do some digging and post my actual words instead?

All you've done is exaggerated my posts massively (and quite inaccurately) in order to support your personal attack.

At least use my own words against me, so you can a) acknowledge and prove authorship, and b) avoid lying.

Wow.

4 million suckers got dragged into purchasing the same phone 2 years running.

Only to find that battery has gone backwards.

Most of you geniuses dont realise that battery should get better with performance gains.

Take intel for example.

Every generation the power usage goes down with performance going up.

Basically the A5 is just a clocked up CPU with a better GPU.

iPhone 4S = Cash Cow.

Lower costs and higher margins make stock markets very happy.

My iPhone 4 has gotten faster with IOS 5 so i doubt the performance gap everyone is seeing is all to do with the A5.

Ill wait for the iPhone 5 when a real successor comes out that warrants a £500 upgrade

The 75 who disliked this were part of the 4 million suckered into the 4S. haha
