Star Trek-like implies technology that is hundreds of years more advanced. You know, the kind that runs spacecraft capable of accelerating safely to the speed of light?

Yeah, let's be realistic.

A significant portion of this forum's population expected an iPhone 5 with a 5" screen, an 8 megapixel camera with high-quality optics all crammed into a case smaller than the iPod touch.

I think realism is still a bit off.

Siri API?

It'ld be really cool if Siri can work other apps. I've been waiting a while to get rid of my standalone TomTom and 3G. If I can verbally instruct TomTom to give directions to a contact from my address book, and then play a podcast or something... Will my car be too noisy to allow the 4s to pick up my voice? Could use an in-ear thingybob I suppose, but I'd rather not.

I'm aware, being a psychology student. I know my post has no bearing on whether or not this conversation will stop being ridiculous. Needless to say, it is ridiculous. People are legitimately whining and cursing Apple themselves, like they're a single person.

I find the study of delusional disorders to be more fascinating.

Well, I think it's still quite amazing to witness the collective hysteria in these forums, or in any online forum for that matter. I actually have fun by simply reading this stuff.

People go great lengths to actually project their own failures and shortcomings on Apple here. And Apple isn't even a person.

I dont know whats worse, the fact that I've noticed all the fanboys downvoting negative comments, or the fact that the fanboys themselves seem to think that defending their precious Apple products on an internets forum by clicking little arrows and making nonsensical fanboyish responses is actually achieving something.

No. Star Trek like means stuff you used to see on Star Trek and say to yourself "I wonder if one day these will become true".

And yes, Siri is one of those things. Voice control was always a futuristic thing people wondered about and it still has not arrived yet, not fully at least. But Siri is a good enough sneak peak.

Same with video chat. That also was a big part of Star Trek people really craved about.
Oh my god I was being an ass. C'mon people, get with it.

However, even if I was taking that person's post seriously, Siri is nowhere near as complex as the AI depicted in Star Trek or other science fiction works of the like. That's not to say at the current exponential growth of technology we won't see it in our lifetime, I just don't think we'll see it any time soon. (As in, the next 2-5 years.)

I'm gonna stick with my iPhone 4, i already have siri on my phone, downloaded when it was available in the app store. so nothing really new for me, can't wait till iOS5 though!

Did anyone notice Phil Shiller's reaction when he announced the 4S?

Now consider your comments within the context of your comments and you will see something truly fascinating before your head explodes.

This one is easy. It doesn't. Not even a little bit.

So all the times I spoke to text while driving and used voice to search something or a location I was dreaming?
Man I really hope I don't wake up any time soon than.
This voice to text sure is not even a little bit useful huh....

You clearly have no idea what Siri does or how it works so yeah you are dreaming. You are an android user though thus used to inferior experiences.

Reading a lot of these comment is sort of like when that lunatic yelled at the politician to "keep your goddamn government hands off of my medicare."

Clueless.

Well, the most comprehensive A.I. which can understand context and talk back is pretty sophisticated right now, but it uses a supercomputer cluster obviously. For that technology to get into a phone, we'll have to wait more than 20 years. But as with Siri, you don't need the horsepower inside phones, since they send the data to a supercomputer, like Siri, and get back the response from there. So for all I know, the happening of that is up to wifi speeds more than mobile CPU's.

I'm glad there's a least one human on here who thinks like I do. It is funny, but there's so much to read and it's so fast paced. After a day of class I don't know if I'm up for much more.

I think I mentioned in another post how they're humanizing Apple, which gives me the heebie jeebies. What I meant in my prior post though, is for me (someone interested in social psychology), reading hundreds of forum posts doesn't seem as exciting as going out and studying behavior directly.

I wonder how long would it take for other languages to roll out.

They didn't say yet. Thanks for posting something on topic. Highly unusual.

I suspect they are working on it. Natural language is harder to expand and get right than a simple command driven system like voice-control or the voice on Android phones. There is a lot of subtlety that needs to be understood for it to work effectively. Siri (from the iOS App) was actually quite good at context and subtlety (in English) I assume it has improved a lot during the iOS integration.

I've got a suggestion for all of the fandroids and people who got their hopes up for an iPhone 5.

1. Read some reviews to see what the iPhone 4S has to offer in terms of gfx and CPU performance.
2. Read up on what Siri has to offer compared to Google voice dictation.
3. Remember that the iPhone 3GS came out as a speedier version of the iPhone 3G.

In terms of CPU and GPU power, this A5 blows away anything android phones have to offer right now.

I heard the same whining when the 3GS came out.

I plan on getting an iPhone 4S since I don't have an iPhone 4.

No kidding. So many idiots get all fed up over a stupid phone. My goodness. We should just laugh at all the people who are upset.

If the shoe fits, wear it. This is an excellent design, and I understand their desire to keep it.

The idiots on here truly amaze me, it's actually really funny to read this whining and complaining. It's a phone. Let me reiterate.

It's a phone.

There are famines, wars, and poverty plaguing this world, and you get upset over a phone? Take all that frustration and go volunteer somewhere, or something. Christ almighty. So you got your panties all in a bunch because Apple made a decision that they felt was the right one. Let them, the adults, make the choices. Apple is a good company, and I feel as though Cook is right for the job.

Trust me when I say that no matter how much whining all of you do on here, this phone will still line the soles of this companies' shoes with platinum.

The TV Apple is rumored to be working on is starting to make more sense. It would probably be 4G enabled to completely cut ties with the cable company. And it would come with Siri so you would never have to search for the remote. Telling it whatever you wanted to watch would be a lot easier than clicking through the channels.

Oh don't get me wrong, Siri is amazing, and if I could afford to sink money into a new phone I would in a heartbeat. Right now I believe it's ahead of our time.

What really gets me from watching the video of the keynote is how Siri's algorithms work with WolframAlpha's. That pairing is beautiful, as I use Wolfram in my math class all the time. I'd imagine you could speak some pretty complex equations into Siri and it would produce the Wolfram results (which include solving the equation, graphing it, etc.)

...But Smartphones are more than phones

Now, I don't go for the whole Siri thing, but I think Apple appreciates that people are very close with to their phones these days. In many ways it's what people predicted would become of desktop systems. People are starting to identify with their phones, see them as reflection of themselves, and depend on them more than their friends.

And, considering all they do, is it really surprising? Say you're a kid and all your calls, most of your messaging, your email, your games, your music, your driving directions, your "library", your photos, your movies, your tv, your internet--all that is now all in your pocket. Now, add in the cost. Your p/t job goes to pay for that phone, you depend on it to be connected...to have a normal social life.

Things have changed. It's not a phone, it's the basically what's become of the western world. These mere phones are our operating systems. We are the application.

My Thoughts:

Good points:
IT'S THE SAME SAIZE AS MY IPHONE 4 YAYYYYYY I don't need a new car holder!
It has the A5.
It has the promised Sony Ericsson Exmoor R camera and good optics :):)
It's a bit cheaper!!

Bad Points:
It STILL has a friggin glass back!!!
IT'S ********* HEAVIER!!!!!! HOW???????? Seriously? How?????

That's it pretty much, will I get one? I'm very tempted because I like the phones size, the A5, and the better camera. BUT, the iPhone 4 gets hot enough playing games and is too heavy already.
However I think I shall get one in white and I will be keeping it too. Because the screen is the best I have ever seen and still have seen.

Oh and another plus point is that I have been proven to be 100% right with my predictions on this very website hahahaha...

And so my next prediction is..... Next year mid year iPhone 5 will launch with the A6 chip, totally new design with a Retina 4" screen. And you lot will wet yourselves.

Oh, certainly. But that's for the psychologist/student to do. I'll just have to get by with this for the time being :)

Trust me, I understand why those psychologists are taking interest in forums. The deluded "behavior" is astonishing.

Apple will clean up this holiday season. iOS 5 phones starting at free ( contract ). Little reason left for families not to go all Apple on their next upgrade cycle.

If (and I'd assume so), Siri has an exposed API for developers, I can image all sorts of creative uses for it. Voice interactive RPGs :)

I also suspect that with the typical environment for phone use, all sorts of noise filtering has been implemented.
