I see that the new Infinity Blade will ONLY work with the iPhone 4S!! And others will follow, then next year we get the iPhone 5 and A6 chip and it repeats... thank God I'm getting a PSVITA. One in the face for those on here who stated Apple has revolutionised gaming hahahaha.... it seems to have revolutionised ripping you off!
God I don't know weather to get one now, if I do it is seriously the last iPhone I do get. I can get a Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray that's more powerful then the iPhone 4! for nearly half the cost of the new 'reduced' iPhone 4 8gb!!

Probably right...I had missed this

Most likely due to increased idle draw of the a5 chip

The weight thing I did notice--very unlike Apple to get heavier. And now it draws more power on stand by? Weird.

I guess they were most interested in putting out one model of phone they can sell to either CDMA or GSM networks. I suppose their is a big cost savings to be had there. And the A5 chip is probably something they are stuck with. They're the ones having them baked, they probably aren't going to let them sit around if they have a supply. Not to say it doesn't have advantages, but when you see a chip is physically much bigger in die-size, puts out more heat, and has a bigger idle draw...well, I wonder if they bit off a little more than they could chew by simply not buying chips from suppliers.

The only, the ONLY thing I'm personally a bit disappointed by in the iPhone announcement is that the 64Gb model is coming out at a higher price point, rather than filling the price point of the previous top tier model. Although full UK pricing hasn't been announced yet (simply "from £499...") I'd be willing to wager from the hundred dollar increases in the US iP4S model and that $100 parity with 3G iPad prices, that the models will come in at £499-£579-£659

It would also give the iPhone / iPad an interesting price - spec parity.

Previous to the event, I was hoping/expecting the top tier to come in at £599. But a £60 increase to those expectations, (and what ... £49? increase from current iP4 prices) I guess it's not too bad in the grand scheme of things. Thats the trouble of reality vs expectations i guess!

That is assuming they don't whack the 64GB in at £699, than I'd be a bit less nonchalant!

Mate, £700 I bet you. It's the UK, we get screwed on everything and let's not forget that it's an Apple product so the price will never drop over the year! You have to be a SERIOUS mug to pay that much for a phone.

I'm wondering who thought up the "S" as a good suffix. Why not the 4A (Foray), 4B (Furby), 4C (Force), 4D (Ford), 4E (Fore!)...I could go on. I personally think it should be 4GTX. That at least has some meaning.

BTW, don't know what everyone is whining about. The 64Gig is a GREAT upgrade, combined with the A5 and a talking Chick in the phone. Man, dat is da *****!

(oh and Android? Really? Yeah my HTC could talk to, but it was *****. If I hear another frickin "D R O I D" I will start dancing disco)

H5

I'll wait for the Apple H5 Hummer phone - I must have the biggest phone and everybody will look at me and my big phone!!! Nobody cares about 4 or 4S - why would anyone use such inferior technology!!!! Everybody who really knows phones and the business hates Apple...

This forum has a lot of dolts..

Fock em, I'm sick of them and the Buttheads at Apple. Can't wait to get an Incredible and a carrier with a real 3G network.

Yet another reason why I'm moving to the Droid platform. OS 4 still pales compared to the Incredible with Sense. Thanks, but no thanks Stevie.

Being tied to AT&T is not a negative. I dropped Verizon for its sorry call quality and customer service before the iPhone came out. Plus take a look at the Droid phones - 90% are fat and fugly. There there are the apps. Even if I wanted to switch the apps I use daily simply aren't on the Droid platform.

For starters how about the notification screen that Apple is now ripping off Android for IOS 5. How about the cloud that Apple is not ripping off them? I switched to an Android based phone after having two iPhones and it is a much better platform than the iPhone. Unfortunately, the fanboys don't take time to really get to know what they're bashing, they just bash and run off a the mouth because it's what fanboys do. Once you've seen how great Google integration is you'll never go want to go back to an iPhone.

What a lame upgrade. Apple has fallen so far behind Android it's not even funny. Where's the iPhone 5 with the bigger screen?

Fascinating is somehow inadequate.

(quotes are in order, back to just prior to the iPhone 4 release).

Who do you love?

Haha awesome

I know Apple has pretty much been recession proof but actually it is probably a really good idea to wait for a redesigned 5 until next Spring. Hopefully people will feel better about springing for a hot new phone by then. Many contacts will be up and for older users and they just opened a hug door with Sprint. Having said that, the improvements today are MAJOR. HUGE. And I wouldn't want a bigger screen on my phone.

I'm happy with the update. As a 3GS user, it will be a massive speed upgrade for me. I don't have LTE in my area, and it doesn't look like I'll be getting LTE any time soon at the rate AT&T is going (on a family plan, so I'm not switching from AT&T). I don't need NFC because I think it's just a buzzword gimmick that won't stop me from carrying around my wallet. Until every place in the world accepts NFC, I still have to have a wallet, and the credit cards hardly add any thickness.

The two things I would have liked is:
- An Apple integrated navigation system, although TomTom does do a fine job. But I wasn't expecting that anyways, so I'm not too disappointd.

- A 4" screen. I don't need, nor want 4.3"-4.7". But 4" would have been nice. But in the end, it's hardly a deal breaker for what I do on my phone; especially since I already have an iPad for playing games that benefit from a large screen.

64GB, with HSPA+, and a significantly faster processor is going to be awesome, at least for me.

I've never had an iPhone, I was hoping they would release the new phone with a better camera and I got my wish! I'm excited about the 4s and Siri looks like a really neat feature.

Well I'm sold. I'm a little annoyed that if I upgrade to this I'll have to pass on the iPhone 5 but the inclusion of Siri combined with faster downloads on AT&T's network have me sold.

"Apple Underwhelms With iPhone 4S"

That's gotta hurt for apple. This is like the first time I've seen bad publicity about an Apple product. Galaxy SII and Nexus Prime will be this years winners. People who buy Apple products are the most likely to be swayed by these types of headlines.

Batch?

I'm in Switzerland. Usually at events like this, Apple mentions the launch countries by name. This time it did not. By first batch, just witch countries are meant?

Funny... just logged in to pay my AT&T bill and saw this:

As a valued AT&T customer, you qualify for a discounted iPhone upgrade at two-year commitment pricing plus $250, along with a two-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee.

Why the heck AT&T doesn't have the common sense to lower the $250 to be the same as what my ETF would be I'll never understand. Right now it would save me money in both upfront costs and in monthly fees to switch to Sprint if I wanted to upgrade to the iP4S.

I do not understand this either. Especially since a new carrier is being added. You would think it would equal the ETF or even discount it some to encourage loyalty.

This because phones are not spec sheets. I still remember people quoting the nokia specs when the iPhone was announced ( in hindsight lmao) but the same people make the same schoolboy errors launch after launch.

Apples hardware and software integration is such a huge advantage that none of the android handset makers have real come close to providing a similar quality experience. This is why the iPhone models continue to stand above all the android phones. It is not even close.

Apple makes a phone for you go use for two years, android manufacturers make phones to be used for two months.

All the misguided spec quotes can't change the fact that apple has managed to maintain a massive lead in user experience in the smartphone market

I find it hard to take people serious when they demand a lower resolution less crisp screen would make the iPhone better. Leave those poor moves to the android wannabes

Great post dude. I remember seeing the original iPhone that my friend had and going.. wait, you can't send picture messages? You don't have skins? You don't have ringtone profiles? Two years later I was buying a 3GS and LOVING the simplicity and solidity of the whole user experience! I didn't give a crap about all those things anymore!
Apple will continue this focus on user experience and will consistently grow their ecosystem rather than fragment it. Why do we need NFC on a phone while there are hardly any places where you can use it?

The only part I'd take issue with is ascribing a motivation of 2 months use for Android phones. I think they're trying their best, but it's basically impossible--at the moment anyway--to beat Apple given Apple's size and their tight control over the hardware.

Of course, it could be decisions like the 4s which come back to bite Apple in the arse. They've put out a phone they know isn't what would sell the most in their established market, ostensibly to become more competitive in the emerging, cheap, Asian markets. It may be a genius move for Apple, or it could backfire. If I were HP, I'd being feeling particularly stupid. This is an opening in the American/Western markets...now WebOS isn't even an option.

Are you able to accept that people have different opinions than you? ****....
I never said I didn't accept it. I told you to stop being a child and grow a pair. Learn to interpret the things people say.

Cry some more.

They've underwhelmed with every release of the iPhone and iPad. And then the pre-orders come flying in at speeds that Apple can't keep up with and the website get updated to: "Ships in 2-3 weeks". And then everything goes back to normal as the investors bang their heads on their desks wondering why they sold their stock.

I think the only reason the event "underwhelmed" was because everyone was so focused on very specific upgrades (larger screen size, thinner phone). But I really do think once it's released, people will realize how big of an upgrade it is with the new chip, the new camera, the new messenger system, wireless sync, cloud, and Siri. And out of all of them, I think Siri is the biggest one. People just don't realize it yet.

I can't wait to get mine, the camera on the 4 is awful, I hate the photos and the video looks terrible on my TV. Finally full 1080p!

Seriously though.

I don't know how well Siri will work, the current voice recognition is awful. I have to put on an american accent to get it to recognize names.

I think Apple's product design is amazing, I can understand why they kept the same body type, even the old 3G and 3GS still look good. It would have been nice to have a selection of sizes though.

I think this is classic Apple strategy, they don't care about what you want, they have grander plans. With Apple it's about the entire experience. They can ignore the competition, because they are able to have so many good ideas and implement them well within their ecosystem.

It's funny how people are pissed that they don't have a bigger screen, or thinner phone, so will jump ship. The beauty of the App store is that it helps to lock people in. If you spent a few hundred in apps, you have a big disincentive to switch to a new platform, because you will loose all those apps.

Here's the thing. Most of the people on these forums are males. Due to a little evolutionary gender twist called sexual dimorphism, males are taller, have more musculature, and amongst other things, have larger hands, than females.

So Apple probably spent quite a bit of time researching to determine what they consider to be the optimum size of the iPhone for human males, females and adolescents.

Now we find that there is a screen size competition amongst OEM's in the Android world, driven almost exclusively by males, and it has spilled over into Apple's walled garden.

My expectation is that this competition is going to continue past 4.5 inch and approach 5 inch before it's done. Nothing wrong with that at all, but I'm not seeing how a small percentage of early adopters in the Android world should be the drivers for larger iPhone in Apple's world.

If you don't like the size of the iPhone make your point and move on, but the argument is getting repetitious without being informative. Personally, and as a male with large hands, I still use the first generation iPod Touch on a daily basis with little difficulty due to the size of my hands.

As for the LTE, nobody with any knowledge expected it due to power consumption of the current chipset.

Your analogy is stupid. It would make sense if you said. "In other news, my blu-ray player won't play blu-ray discs anymore. Idiot...
Wow, just wow. That person was joking. Can we please ban all those under 18 from this place?

People say "everyone" wants a bigger screen….
I certainly don't. Reason I don't like most Android phones, They're just..too big. With that huge screen, and not even being that thick..No thanks. Many people don't want a bigger screen. Like me.

This is a very good upgrade. You can only come up with SO many new Design's for a phone. Might as well same the new design for the next iPhone.

I'm getting it.
