Funny. You thing that is different, significantly, in Europe? My kids and wife each have a phone (two teens). That is pretty common here. Drive by a mall and find the kid that DOESN'T have a phone - good luck with that. You don't actually think it is one phone per household over here do you?

phone or iphone ? everyone has phones here, have you been to the UK ? I sit in a tube on the london underground I can can say 7 out of 10 are using iphones, working on films sets, out of a crew of 40 people, 30 are using iphones, percentage wise thats huge. but now the samsung galaxy 11 is out, that might change

As regards Siri, off the top of my head I can't think of any other product launch ever where the most hyped USP was actually just an initial public Beta.

(cue Windows Vista jokes)

I can... it was called the FIRST iPhone! we paid $600 for the privilege of paying AT&T $100/month for 2G data, spotty unreliable service and no real apps to speak of... anyone here remember when they were seriously considering web-only apps for the iPhone?

On top of all that, two months later, they lowered the price by $200...

I'm the biggest apple fan going, but that one felt liked I was being bent over...

Couldn't disagree more. The first iPhone was the greatest tech purchase I've ever made (and I had the first iPod, too). Yes it had loads of limitations that would make it seem downright primitive today, a mere 4 years later, but it was staggeringly far ahead of anything else out there at the time. And it worked extremely well. I mean there was a lot it couldn't do compared to the current model, but what it could do, it did excellently. Truly a revolutionary product, even more so than the iPod or iPad.

It's pretty much the same over here in the states bro.

I would have to agree with you Q, the original iPhone had far too many limitations to even count, but anyone that would was forgetting that it was the first device to truly pull together the meat and potatoes of what the general population AND the nerd community had been asking for for almost 5 years.

Before the first iPhone it was the Treo which did everything but was terrible at it mainly because of the UI. It even had Wifi/bluetooth syncing of data and media.

But the iPhone was just seamless, and as they added features they kept the features seamless which (as an Android user) not other phone/software company has done yet.

iOS 5 took the Android notification system right from Googles mouth, but made it better in a number of ways.

I Think that Singapore will top that, iPhones everywhere. :)

And you know that I meant the US before when I said Americans.
And don't start about the Americas, there is a difference,North America-Central America and you know next.
Start about North America and compare that with Europe, you'll get it, they have less population.
On the other hand, who cares, the fact IS that Apple is an international company now and should act like it.

Edit. Nokia can and does take the world into account even now they make a lot LESS money than Apple, so Apple needs to do more

thank you, because the danger is, the galaxy 11 is a good phone, and people will get pissed off if Apple are sending out stuff on a beta, and only initially for the US. It seems like they were in a rush to get it out to kerb any of us Apple fans to convert to an android doesnt it ? wake up a little, Im not going to use anything else other than apple, have since 1991. But wake up to the rest of the world please !

The video quality on the 4s is amazing. More color and detail. DAMN WHY DID I HAVE TO GO AND GET THE IPHONE 4 2 MONTHS AGO!!

The video looks really good. I like it. Too bad because I bought my 32gig Verizon iPhone 4 (because of the unlimited plan) in June and my upgrade isn't until Feb 2013. :(

Just sell the 4 on e-bay or craig's list, then buy the 4s -
(people have been doing this for years)

I could sell my iPhone 4 on CL or eBay but I don't want to spend $400-$500+ for another phone.

I didn't mean to say that it wasn't a great device at all- in fact- I still have my two original iPhones in use as Pandora streamers in the office, etc, etc.. and i still say that original design is the most beautiful. Soft around the edges but with a flat back.

That being said, we paid premium to essentially provide Apple with massive amounts of public R&D. I've had nearly every every Apple device going, (Newton's too) and I've liked them all.... the first iPhone was interesting in that Apple basically admitted it was Beta, and then lowered the price by $200 a mere two months later.

I've also always wondered if Apple knew they were going to go with the App Store prior to the original launch, especially because the initial plan was to go with web based apps.... In any case.. my 4s's JUST ARRIVED!!! Opening time!!!

"finding that Siri is having trouble with specific accents"

Yeah good, maybe these people can learn to talk right

Americans have wayyyy too much patience with foreign or screwed up accents because they don't learn foreign languages. Ever since learning a new language I have had absolutely no pity on college professors that have been in US 20+ years and still can't speak comprehensibly. Their LAZINESS is being inflicted on everyone around them, THEY are the rude ones who should be punished. A small accent might be unavoidable, but thick accents are nothing but being LAZY

I don't think you speak any language other than English. If you spoke another one, you would know that it is very difficult to learn the vocabulary, grammar. It is very difficult to have a good accent.

Either you have a big mouth or you are just a poor lazy monolingual ignorant.

I lived 4 years in the USA and Americans are not as patient as you think. Actually, there many open-mind and lots of not so open-minded people there. Please, leave you shotgun and get out of Arizona or Texas. Tell the Tea Party you won't present for the next hate meeting and learn a new language. You'll tell us if it is that easy.

I have a question about getting refunded for current MobilMe customers.

I set up iOS5 on my iphone 4 (not my iPad 2 yet) and everything appears to be working ok. I have a MobileMe account that I don't guess I will be using for anything anymore so I figured that I might as well get refunded for the time I have left on it. I found the page to request the refund than I got nervous. Once I cancel my membership, my email address associated with MobileMe will remain in tact, correct? Because it is the same email address I used to set up iCloud. I am pretty sure that will not go away, but I was just suddenly nervous to cancel because I was not sure.

Anyone else cancel their MobileMe subscriptions? Or have any issues doing so?

How does having a thick accent make you lazy? Please explain. It is a known fact that it is much harder for adults to learn new language, and if they do they will have an accent, it's unavoidable. And if you know only one language (like yourself), then you don't have an accent because you speak only one language. But if you learn second or third language, you will have an accent, it's common sense.

Anyone have issues migrating from MobileMe?

I found out the hard way that you can't merge accounts. My iTunes account was under my normal email address (a gmail address) and my MobileMe was, of course, my MobileMe email address. You can't merge the two, and it's obviously annoying to change the account you use with iTunes. That would mean you would "lose" your apps, music, and books.

But then I realized something. The only thing I got for moving my MobileMe account to iCloud was an extra 20GB of space. It was easier to just export my calendars, bookmarks, and address book, and use them with my iTunes account. The only thing I lose in that equation is the extra 20GB in storage.

The bottom line, for me, was that MobileMe's features all took extra steps. They were easy steps, but steps none the less. iCloud attempts to simply store and sync everything invisibly to you– hence the PhotoStream instead of Gallery, app storage instead of iDisk, etc. Sure, I'll miss iDisk. I use that a fair amount– but even that need will go away once app developers integrate with iCloud. You'll just store those documents in the cloud.

Long story short, I think I'm going to argue they give me the 20GB of storage on my iTunes account instead. If I go through with it, I'll let you all know what happens.

Last night I was setting up an iPad 1 and iPod Touch. I performed the MobileMe move to iCloud. I had the same issue where I had an Apple ID that was different then my MobileMe ID. Initially, I was a bit worried because I was using my MobileMe ID for iTunes store and then relaized that I could not see any of my purchases because they were all made using my Apple ID. After thinking about it for a bit I decided to switch back to using my Apple ID for the iTunes store. I use my MobileMe ID for iCloud. It really is not all that bad a situation. You could sync your Apple ID password with your MobileMe ID password (this is what I did) which could help to make it easier to use both.

I still have my MobileMe account but I would think that that would not be an issue since come 6/30/2012 the MobileMe accounts will be retried anyways.

Sadly Siri doesn't understand my Scottish accent, however when I put on a fake yankee American accent it understands me.

So to sum up Apple think America is the centre of the universe and I am just about to return my iPhone 4S and get a Nexus Prime.

Apple suck

Yes, indeed, Apple sure does suck for not making sure that accents from each of the world's 6,809* languages works perfectly with their brand new device.

Maybe when a Scottish company creates the world's most popular mobile devices, they can ensure that recognizing your accent is one of the first priorities.

(*The most extensive catalog of the world’s languages, generally taken to be as authoritative as any, is that of the Ethnologue organization (http://www.ethnologue.com), whose detailed classified list currently includes 6,809 distinct languages.)

Sad..the only reason why I want a 4S and to get rid of my 4, is to get a phone where my proximity sensor works properly, and the white is a lot nicer then the black! I have to wait to upgrade until Nov 30th...ugh!

I can't watch the video in youtube (in HD), without the screen turning white with an exclamation mark inside it.
No idea why.

I'm using a MPB 2011 with chrome to view it. Is the video acting strange for anyone else too?
Other HD vids do work.

If anyone pre ordered at best buy this is what I was told when going in to pick up my Sprint 32gb iPhone 4S... "you're guaranteed a phone, but you're not guaranteed when"

Not that I'm surprised (I don't shop at Best Buy).

But that is just stupid. Anyone with money can get an iphone without pre ordering (they just don't know when).

What's the point of pre-ordering then for the customer (for Best Buy it is to gaurentee them a sale. But for the buyer all that means is that you are stuck with them when you might have been able to get one sooner if you didn't stick with them. Of course you can eventually get an iphone, it's not like they are a limited supply).

I’m confused about iOS5…if you could help me out.

iOS5 brings “PC-less-ness” but requires Vista+ or Lion. Huh? What functionality will I gain over iOS4.x while still on SL?

For those with iPhone 4 who’ve upgraded to iOS5, have you seen increased or diminished performance?

You don't need Lion on your Mac to install iOS5 on your iDevice. It's just if you want to use iCloud on your Mac, you need Lion. (Is that correct?)

re pic of white ip4s in big hands

man - is that a iphone nano - the hands look like bear paws

Got my phone a couple of hours ago... have to say it was a relativly somber event–*waiting in line not but 10 feet away from the make-shift memorial.

:apple:Steve. We miss you. :apple:

The thing that sucks for me about preordering the iPhone 4S is that they had to send it to my billing address... I live an hour away from home for college.

This has been the only time that I wished I lived at home.

I can't wait to meet you iPhone 4S. :p

You just call them after you order and they will change it for you. Worked for me.

What you *don't* want Siri to say

Okay, I wasn't going to post any responses to those members that haven't gotten the naming schema down right, but I will help anyone out that hasn't read any of the naming wars that go on in the iPhone camp.

1. iPhone
2. iPhone 3G (not third generation, 3G as in network)
3. iPhone 3Gs
4. iPhone 4
5. iPhone 4s
6. iPhone 5
7. iPhone 5s
8. (so forth and so on)

Another way to look at is is this

1. iPhone
2. iPhone 3G/3Gs
3. iPhone 4/4s
4. iPhone 5/5s

Now if Apple wants to end the confusion, they really need to go back to calling the iPhone just the iPhone, and leave the numbers out of it, but that may cause major issues with carriers/stores having multiple generations of phones for sale at once.

The next iPhone will either be an iPhone 5 or just an iPhone. It won't be an iPhone 6 . . . . unless Apple just wants to skip numbers like they've done with Final Cut Pro and Quicktime.

Something it seems nobody has considered: following the naming convention they already employed with the release of the 2nd generation iPhone, I bet they're going to call the next one the iPhone LTE.
