This was Tim Cook's first product that was 'his' and I seriously hope he is kicking a$$ and taking names a la Steve Jobs.
For clarification, the iPhone 4S is a Steve Jobs product. It was finished long before he passed tragically.

Tim Cook will not have his official stamp on an iPhone until after the next model is released. They have many months of lead time invested in R&D, manufacturing, FCC approvals and testing along with carrier involvement.

Don't be so quick to jump on Cook ... give this man a chance and I bet we will be pleasantly surprised at how well he does. :)

Starting with iPhone 6 we should see what post-Steve iPhones will look like and function like.

I hope that includes revamping the screen size to at least 4.2-4.3 inch.

I know many here love their 3.5 inches, but Apple can just roll out two models if need be, although I can bet anything if they did increase the size there would still be huge line ups all around.

After using a bigger screen it is really hard to love a 3.5 inch. Watching anything or even reading is a pain. Really no point in keeping it small.

I can't see the screen size increasing personally, maybe marginally to 3.8".

I think Apple are right to keep the size 3.5" anything bigger starts creeping towards tablet territory and they already sell those. The current size keeps the phone palm sized, and phones the likes of which of the Nexus (4.6") and S2 (4.3") are not palm sized.

I had a Galaxy S2 for a few weeks (I got it free on a contract renewal) and it was fantastic for viewing websites bit lousy for comfort (in hand) and for putting in your pocket etc. It was just too big. You couldnt (for example) text with one hand because your fingers couldnt comfortably reach so you had to use both hands.

Watching? what are you watching? movies? I'd rather have the 326dpi over 4.5" but thats just me.

With much anticipation Apple released the iPhone 4S a few weeks ago but since then, customers have encountered several significant issues: Siri outages, battery consumption, poor call quality. This makes antenna-gate seem tiny by comparison.

Now Apple clearly anticipated the excitement and pent-up demand for the 4S but from an engineering and infrastructure standpoint, well, it has not been Apple's finest hour.

As a long-time Apple customer (iPad2, iPhone 4, MacBook Pro plus phones and computers for my family) I am a concerned. This was Tim Cook's first product that was 'his' and I seriously hope he is kicking a$$ and taking names a la Steve Jobs.

You can sell cool technology all you want but it needs to work as advertised or it WILL negatively effect your business and allow competitors an opening.

Few things to consider: As of current, Siri is still in Beta stage so most likely they are constantly being tested. Yes, at times you will encounter issues with Siri with the network but it's nothing that serious. It will eventually work.

Apple have acknowledged that there is a bug that caused the battery to drain. Not just on iphone 4S, mainly in iOS 5. Personally I don't have battery drain issue, either I don't know it or I just don't notice the difference. Apple have seeded out the iOS5.0.1 beta to developer and supposedly iOS5.0.1 should fix the battery drain issue. We will have to wait and find out when it goes out to public.

As for poor call quality: it depends on where you live and how many bar you usually get. I live in place where I mostly get full 5 bars, except few places and never had any poor call quality. Never had a dropped call (ever since 3G).

I would like a slightly bigger screen too but I think 4" is the sweet spot. I think anything bigger would just be an attempt to do like others and Apple doesn't have to do like others. I had an EVO 4G before my iPhone and I was really concerned that I would miss the 4.3" of the EVO but I find I like the smaller form factor a lot more. If they could make the screen bigger without changing the size of the phone I would be all for it.

Given Apple's 3/2 screen ratio, my guess is that we won't see a higher resolution until it is feasible to quadruple the resolution again (1920x1280). Given that the highest resolution phones right now are 1280x720, it might be 2 years from now (hopefully sooner). Depending on whether it is 4.0" or 4.5" it would require roughly 400 or 500ppi screen, which is theoretically possible right now but probably a bit too expensive.

I'll be honest, I expected more/better. 16mos spent on a iPhone 4 with an 8mp camera and a iPad 2 chip. The rest is software and they obviously fumbled that a bit.

It has an improved antenna, as well. While I'm sure we all would like something more substantial, in the end, that likely wasn't realistic. Apple produces 1 new iPhone per year and needs to appeal to a broad audience. HTC, Samsung, Motorola, and others produce several models, and they do incremental updates quite often, themselves.

I think the delay was more the result of the time it took to develop iCloud and iOS 5. Remember, Apple is a hardware company, but they emphasize software and rarely have the best hardware specifications.

I'm not talking simply the hardware, I never get hung up on that. I'm talking the whole package. 16mos and with the issues people are having it makes you wonder. They probably spent 1mo on hardware, 15mos on software and many believe it's buggy as hell. My battery sucks and I've had more apps crash on this phone then my 4.

I really dont see much of a problems with all these...it's not like the design is a complete pieces of s h I t...

Bugs will always be there be it how u do it cause all these are created by human and human is never perfect so how can we make something perfect when we never are.

Just a simple bug fit and everything back to normal.

So when ios5.0.1 come out Bugs solve and you will forgot all these and move on...:D

I love my 4S... Even more than my 4. It has a slight battery issue right now, but I'm confident apple will fix it.

Siri is a beta and pretty phenomenal. I can fathom why they released it that way.

I think it was pretty amazing that apple had so much stock available this time. Lines weren't as crazy, people could get phones the first weekend despite craze demand.

My call quality is better than with my 4 and I finally have a phone with a great proximity sensor!!

I'm just not as worked up over these issues as you are.

The best thing about this phone is the crispy snappy good antenna.( both for network and wifi). You didn't mention it at all. This is the absolute best iPhone of the three I've had. By far.

wait for the 5 just wait for the 5

From going from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S, I couldn't go back to the iPhone 4. I can finally hold all my music thanks to having 64 GB, Siri works really well, Camera is excellent in every way, and I can surf the web even faster.

A 'long-time Apple customer' would remember the Apple III which you literally would have to pickup off the desk and drop an inch occasionally to reseat the connections, then were 128-Plus power supplies that melted caps when used in warm climates under constant use (I used to repair these) - Steve insisted NO FAN, or how about the exploding PowerBook 5300 batteries, then there was the DOS Compatible cards ::shudder::

The 4S is perfect compared to real foibles of the past - relax.

Otherwise, man-up and return it if you are unsatisfied...

I play games on my iPhone 4 a LOT and before iOS 5 I never had "phone too hot to play games syndrome." Now, alas, I do. I really hope they fix the battery thing soon as possible.

Not truly on topic, but oh wells.

People need to stop saying battery is an issue forveverybody when it isn't for everybody

+1

Mine has been at least as good as my 4, if not better.

Exactly

Right out the box my stats are

5 hours usage
22 hours in standby

With still 29% left and that's pretty much out of the box so it should only get better. And this is shy having email push on for a while.

You may be the lucky one with a problem free phone. There are multiple threads on both Apple and McRumours about call quality, and Battery life.

Apple has acknowledge the second issue and will undoubtably eventually ack the first.

Hopefully they are software issues that a new release can resolve.

And there are lots of threads about problems with the iPhone 4. I am glad to have a phone without the things reported on the iPhone 4. There were threads about issues with the antenna. There still are threads about issues with the home button, which was my biggest complaint.
I have no problems with the iPhone 4S. I wish it had a bigger battery, but I have been saying that for over a year even when the consensus here was that the iPhone 4's battery was fine. Lots of people said they didn't want a bigger battery in the phone. Maybe if more people had complained to Apple about the battery life in the iPhone 4 then they would have given us a bigger battery.
