These issues need to get out to the media, otherwise apple will not acknowledge them. Every iPhone 4S I have touched has crackling/buzzing coming from somewhere in the phone. While this would be fine on a computer its not fine on a device you stick your ear on in order to use it. I am happy for those people who believe they can't hear the buzzing since they are satisfied, but once you hear it, its game over, you will always hear it.

Neither of them is stopping the iPhone sales because despite how loud the complaints are they are still only like 1/2 of 1% of users. We don't see the other folks on the forums cause they are too busy telling their IRL friends face to face about how awesome the phone is

You might be on to something. ;)

iPhone 4S demand runs high: 85% of Apple Retail Stores see daily sell-outs

“Consumer interest in the iPhone 4S has not waned since the handset went on sale last month, as one new analysis has found most Apple stores run out of stock on a daily basis,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.
“Chris Whitmore with Deutsche Bank issued a note to investors on Monday in which he revealed that a poll of about 30 retail stores revealed Apple is experiencing daily stock-outs of the iPhone 4S at most of them,” Hughes reports. “He said that between 85 percent and 90 percent of stores polled continue to run out of inventory.”

Hughes reports, “As Apple works to keep up with demand at its retail stores, the company is still advertising a wait time of one to two weeks for new iPhone 4S orders placed on its online storefront, both in the U.S. and internationally.”

This is why I am afraid to return mine if the replaced one won't be much better. I would like Apple to acknowledge it but I don't think they see an issue.

I have this issue. I'm not worried. If it's a software issue it will be fixed, and if it's hardware I'll get it replaced in a few months.

Those of you with the problem:

(1) are you using the phone by itself or with a bluetooth headset?
(2) if you are using a bluetooth headset please indicate brand/model?
(3) what carrier are you using?
(4) is wireless enabled or operating at the time of the problem?

Just asking.

My co-worker bought a 4s shortly after release and he's had it for over a week and at work we use the phones heavily since none of us on the team are in the same offices so we constantly make phone calls, texts and such to communicate.

He has had no problems. His theory was that they made so many in such a short amount of time it was inevitible that some lemons might come to light.

1) I WAS using a bluetooth headset. But I've given up completely on it. I could not make outbound calls with it. And after attempting to make an outbound call, the phone would get stuck on speakerphone. I could receive calls, but call quality (on the other end) was terrible.

2) It's a panasonic cordless phone system primarily. Worked fine with my old 3gs. Even after I updated that to ios 5. I also occasionally use a Jawbone, but I have not tried it with this phone.

3)ATT

4)wi-fi is always on for me. So yes.

I hate to say it, but this phone is a piece of junk.

Sound issues with Siri. After using Siri, sound is either incredibly loud or completely gone.

Last night text messages(received) were making double text alert sounds at an extremely high volume.

Text message or any other notification sounds generally DO NOT work when I am on a call. They should. Or at least they did with my prior 2 iPhones.

Bluetooth issues. Can NOT make outbound calls. Call quality is terrible. Causes the phone to default to speakerphone after trying to make a call.

Phone randomly defaults to speakerphone (even with bluetooth turned off). This happens when trying to make a headset call or a regular call.

When the phone is stuck on speakerphone, it is stuck. I can NOT switch it to any other audio source. Again, this is when making an outbound call. It seems to work normally when receiving calls.

Phone randomly keeps the mic on when making a headset call, creating a weird audio effect.

Phone call has echo issues.

Phone call has general call quality issues. Last night it went from ok to some kind of unintelligible robotic sounding mess in the middle of a call. For some reason, switching it for a second to speakerphone then back fixed the issue. Other times, the general call quality degrades over time, going in and out.

Notification audio issues. Sometimes there is an alert sound, sometimes there isn't. There always should be one.

I have been waiting for Apple to either state they are aware of the issue or working on a fix. I have been avoiding bringing it in for replacement, hoping it might be solved by an update. Also because I do NOT want deal with the utter waste of several hours returning the phone and setting up a new phone. And because I am concerned that a new phone will have the exact same issues. At this point though, it looks like it is my only option.

Sadly, it appears to me that this is both a combination of software and hardware fail. It appears that Siri is clearly not ready for prime time. It appears that the new Bluetooth 4.0 chipset is an issue. It appears that notifications is wonky.

Very disappointed.

Hi,

I've had similar issue with my iP4s, which is/was under a month old (i'm in the UK) just got mine replaced.

Been having the problem since I got it on 21st October. Basically 70% of the calls I'd make would result in the other person not being able to hear me!? I'd have to hang up and call the person back again for the call to work.

It was getting stupid! Very annoying, especially during work calls.

So today I went into the Apple store explaining the problem (knowing full well the outrage being expressed by many others online about this, and Apple not recognising the problem) and got my phone replaced. Here's hoping the new one won't be affected.

The cheeky thing was, the Genius almost accused me of having water damage on the device even though non of the senors were triggered. She even went to the lengths of saying "this time i'll replace it" almost telling me off for being a naught boy!

My phone isn't water damaged, as she said herself none of the senors were tripped! She made a guess that that was probably water causing the problem and made it seem that technically she had to replace even though that's what she thought was the problem... the cheek!

I explained to her that many, MANY people are having EXACTLY the same problem, identical in fact, and she told me they are not allowed to look at the forums online. Okay, fair enough, Apple can have that policy but it doesn't stop the facts.

Anyway, got it replaced and hopefully it won't be affected. But after hearing other having several replaced I'm not so sure.

Siri the problem?

I decided to turn off Siri completely to see what would happen.

And guess what, it seems to have solved a lot of my issues. Bluetooth seems to work, it does not get stuck on speakerphone.

1 - For me, the problems occurred with iPhone earbuds and Bluetooth headsets

2 - Two - first is a Plantronics Backbeat 903+ second is a Sony Ericsson MW600 with different brands of earbuds attached (Sony, Apple, Scoche)

3 - ATT

4 - Yes, Wireless is enabled.

Finally submitted a trouble ticket to Apple. Went through factory reset/restore - and the issue kept occurring. So the phone tech set up a prearranged swap at the Apple Store here in SF.

For the most part, it went OK. No one at Apple seemed interested in the diagnostics though. The Genius took it away for awhile saying she had to establish warranty coverage, and seemed genuinely surprised when I gently reminded her that is was a 4S.

Am almost afraid to jinx it - but so far, so good - and I ask everyone I talk with, since they put up with the issue on my old phone.

I was using the Bose head set, never had a problem on my iPhone 4 , I could hear the person I was talking to, but they could not hear me. I called apple was on hold for ever, longer than I ever had been before, so I just hung up. I will try to call again today. I am sure they are going to want me to take it to the apple store. Went back to my iPhone 4 no problems at all. On top of that the battery life is driving me crazy.

echo madness

I have isolated it to the 5.01 update. My echoing comes from incoming callers getting the echo. i use an external charger. If I take off the external charger they have no echo. That is a 4gs with 5.01. With my 4g I have no caller echo with the cover on or off. It only has the 5.0 update.
Apple Genius who knows everything said the usual it's not an Apple product but a 3rd party product. I asked why don't they make one.

They would not replace my phone, but that is possibly because it has a tiny crack on the bottom right corner of the glass - not on the display. So, my sound troubles go on. Just called someone to do an interview and my mic didn't work - when it finally started working again they had stopped picking up their phone! It actually affects my work and they would not replace it for me. Yeesh.

I'm not getting audio on a fair amount of my outgoing calls. It's been the only lame part about the phone. People say they get the calls but I'm not hearing anything on the other end.

I have had the static problem on my IPhone 4S since updating! Including a wonderful two hour battery life!

I took it back to Apple store which they refused a refund! Also ontop of the drama I had to speak to the online store which was a total different entity to the actual shop stores!

The best part of this is I have arranged a replacement which will arrive. Next week but seems that they will be picking up the old IPhone shortly. To add insult to the drama they emailed me an invoice for ten replacement .... I hope this is just an admin job and not actually invoicing me for the replacement!

Since i got the WORLD BEST PHONE, my Apple mobile experience has been the WORST EVER!

Im having this issue that when placing a call, the person i called wont hear me, i have to try 10 times or more to get them to hear me. I had tried using the speaker, the headset and different bluetooths sets and the issue persists.

This is real frustrating I can spend 20 minutes trying to talk with someone but i have to drop the call and call back again, and drop the call and call again and drop the call and call again, and so on, and so on...

Till they can finally hear me!!!!

I called Apple Tech support and they told me that since my Apple iPhone 4S, was purchased with a mobile phone carrier (Telcel), Apple wouldnt take action under any warranty circustances, since that would be breaking the agreement with the carrier that sold me the phone (I was explained, that once Apple sold the iPhone to a mobile carrier, Apple wouldnt get involved in any guarantee between the end-user and the mobile phone carrier). So they told me to get in touch with the carrier that sold me the phone (TELCEL) so they can take action with this issue.

So i went to TELCEL, and they told me that in order to get any warranty they had to keep the phone for 2 weeks or more, so they can identify the problem (R U kidding me?!?!), besides they told me that the issue would get fixed by the tech team and i would receive a repaired iPhone. (I pay full price and a 2-year contract and what would i get? a refurbished iPhone?!) Is this for real? If i wanted a refurbished iPhone i would had look for it on Craigslist or eBay. C'mon Guys!

So Apple and/or Telcel.
I would like to you to consider this solutions.

A. Give me a brand new functional iPhone 4S, like the one i was promised when i pay full cash for it.
B. Take your iPhone 4S back and cancel my 2-year contract agreement.

Back in 2008, I dropped my 3G (from O2, UK). I just took it to the Apple store and told the guy that I had some random issues with the device. He pulled on the hardware testing kit and tested some of the things and found out that the phone was fine but had a crack on rear side.

He simply asked me about it and I said that I may have dropped once or twice. He insisted, I wait for a couple of days and gave me my case no. In 2 days, I got a call from Apple with a replacement iPhone 3G.

On another note, Apple has replaced my iPhone 4S twice due to static issues.

Apple seems to take care regardless of whether you're on contract or not. Its basically not that Apple doesn't want to solve the issue. Carrier locked phones can sometimes be an issue the way they handle some obligations. I am not aware of any but I think you need to go to the Apple store and just ask them for a replacement.

Ok, so update for me. After living with this problem for some time and doing a lot of research on it, I really decided the problem was almost definitely hardware related. Several people throughout the long apple discussions thread and elsewhere talked to a few apple reps who were aware of the problem and said that it was a hardware problem related to the audio reciever switching component that switches from earpiece to speaker to headset, but that apple was not going to take a public position on the issue, and just deal with people on a one to one basis. Don't quote me on this, that is my personal position but its culled from spending more hours researching this problem then I'd like to think about honestly.

Today I went to the Apple store and switched my phone. Did extensive testing on the audio on outgoing calls, plugged in and out an 1/8 inch cable, which sometimes will trigger the problem. Audio was fine. I was just about to leave the mall when I noticed... big blue splotch on my screen, right in the middle right side of the screen. Tried cleaning the screen, but it was obvious that it was a screen defect (I'm a motion graphic designer, sensitive to screen defects in cameras and monitor media). I couldn't believe it. Waited another 45 minutes to see another genius, and the phone was replaced again. Screen looks good, about 40 calls, no problem, plugging audio cable in and out, nothing seems to be triggering an audio problem. I still can't believe that I got a second defective phone. Just confirms to me how shoddy the QC on these phones is. Anyhow, my 3rd 4s seems defect free so far. I will report back if I encounter another problem.

I tried to live with the problem for a month, waiting for word from apple (don't hold your breath), but over time my phone was just more and more frustrating, and in my mind I just started seeing it as a broken/faulty device. I wasn't going to settle on that sentiment towards a device that I'm so intimitely tied to. Replace your phone, but test, test, test, and inspect the new phone to death! Someone said that the estimates are something like 1/10 phones have some kind of defect, major or minor, and tons of people are just living with these defects.

It does seem a little buggy, but nothing major. The one thing I noticed is my car bluetooth. It shows it's connected to car, but every once in a while the call doesn't direct sound through the bluetooth when a call comes in nor does the car recognize a call is coming in. I would probably blame this on the new bluetooth 4.0 chip and being new. Probably a few bugs to work out.

The other issue I have is with 3g Data, sometimes it refuses to pull up a webpage or send an iMessage. Holding down power and home button to reboot seems to fix this every time.

EDIT:

Have this issue as well.

I can't understand why a informative report like yours was downrated.

Never had any of these issues. Sometimes it takes a second before I can hear the other person when I call, but it's not consistent. Not sure if it's an iPhone issue or the provider.

Over two months now and 100 pages long thread and still no fix yet... Good grief

Just because it hasn't been name called in an iOS update doesn't mean there's not a fix. If those folks have bothered to go visit their local genius bar they might find the answer they want. Some of them probably have and now they are all happy and eventually they'll get around to posting about it.

That said, how many folks are really having this issue, or any issue, compared to the whole. People on the apple hosted board love to make it sound like their issue is a major design flaw but more often than not, it's a less than one percent issue.

I have this issue. I'm not worried. If it's a software issue it will be fixed, and if it's hardware I'll get it replaced in a few months.

how long can you keep a phone before replacing it for a new one with these problems?

I am having problems with my Audi Bluetooth and the Iphone 4S, whereas until last week it was working just fine with my iphone 4. I really dunno what to do, I saw a post that said that turning off Siri would make it work properly with Bluetooth. I will try that tomorrow and see if fixes the problem. I am actually hating this phone. The battery stuff can be fixed by doing a clean install on the phone, instead of reversing a back up, I know it is a bitch to do it, but it fixed my battery, now the Bluetooth is a kick in the nuts. How am I supposed to work with a phone like this.
