As mentioned earlier in this thread, it seems the internal microphone sometimes does not shut off properly when a headset is inserted.

With the headset inserted I tried covering it (the bottom mic, not the noise cancellation dito) up during a call and the echo went down significantly, only to return when I removed my thumb from the internal mic.

So hopefully it's a software issue that's relatively easy to fix.

This is the same (incorrect) behavior that the 4 exhibits.

I agree, the SW needs to be fixed to allow for this use case.

Last time I called ATT to complain of audio issues their answer was sir I can not hear you like it was my fault.........

Is Apple Support just actively reading forum posts,

Nope. THey don't read the forums.

are people calling 1-800-MY-IPHONE, or going to the iPhone Feedback page (www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html)?

Pretty sure there is no such phone number and the feedback page isn't giving them what they need to know because you aren't including diagnostic info.

If you want to give them feedback you need to either turn on the auto send diagnostics, go to a genius bar (with an appointment) or both.

Oh and if you are having any kind of issues, do NOT restore your phone before you go to the bar. It wipes out all the diagnostic history so they only see from the restore forward and that history often is what tells them the vital details.

Not even "antennagate" stopped the iPhone 4. This won't stop the 4S, that comes with Siri, to top it off.

Neither of them is stopping the iPhone sales because despite how loud the complaints are they are still only like 1/2 of 1% of users. We don't see the other folks on the forums cause they are too busy telling their IRL friends face to face about how awesome the phone is

----------

Two points:

1. Satisfy Apple's core clientele: the professional users

sorry to disappoint but the pro users are NOT Apple's core clientele and haven't been for a long time.

2. Satisfy regular consumers by not delivering products that have battery problems, antenna problems, connection quality problems.

No one can have 100% perfect results. Every iPhone issue that has ever come up has been either something out of Apple's control (such as ATT having ***** coverage in an area) or less than 1% of the total number of users. That's really very good QC results when you consider things like the 60% of all Xbox units will fail in the first 6 months and Microsoft will replace it with another of the same model that will also have a 60% in the first 6 failure rate.

Even things like the Final Cut software complaints were overhyped by the media for hits and were likely more like 5% of folks and half of them probably didn't actually need what they were complaining was missing.

----------

Especially those consumers who are new to the iPhone. This is a horrible experience for them

Is it. There's a number of tales that the iPhone was set up from a backup and a restore and set up as a new iPhone is fixing the whatever issue so it is possible that folks with new iPhones aren't seeing these issues because they didn't have a backup with a corruption to put on their phones. It's also possible that they don't have 4 year old bluetooths with out dated software they are trying to connect to their phones or wired headsets they have been using for a year that have shorted out wires from being bent and pulled around and so on

----------

LOL yeah, just like he made heads roll with the antenna issue of the iPhone 4...get real.

And if he was it would be the heads of the media that hit whore by hyping up a small issue to look like some kind of universal tragic defect

My only issue with the 4S is the 2 hour battery life. Other than that, it's a great phone.
Stop watching porn on it 24/7 and magical things will start happening to your battery...
No phone will hold longer if you continuously use it to it's maximum capacity...

PS: You could also try using Duracell, bunnies swear it's the best you can get!

4 million units sold in two days and over 40 million projected by end of this quarter (they'll do it) is pretty damn good karma.

Not even "antennagate" stopped the iPhone 4. This won't stop the 4S, that comes with Siri, to top it off.

That says a lot about the people who buy them.

Same Issue

I had an issue when my mom called me for my birthday on Halloween. Verizon, 16 GB iPhone 4S.

We would talk for about 10 minutes (I was not on speakerphone), and then suddenly she would ask me if I was there. I would respond, but apparently she didn't hear anything on her end. I attributed it to her phone (Crappy smartphone, AT&T), and it worked when we cancelled the call and then re-called each other, but then it happened two more times. I never tried the switch to speakerphone, but I bet it was actually my phone causing the issue.

Ive bought 4 iPhone 4S 16GB (2B and 2W). All of them has echoing problem, no audio and static when making calls on 3G and im really pi**ed off. Im very dissapointed with Apple QC. It looks like that im gonna return them all, and switch back to original 4.

those poor beta testers ...

Yeah .. should've been a free ride, shouldn't it?

Unfortunately, it's not only Apple's practice, been there with Sony's first gen of PS3 and got the frekin yellow light. I paid $600 for being lousy beta tester.

So I swore that day on I'd never be an early adopter popular product ever again.

I had the voice problem and replaced my iPhone 4s at Apple store.

When I called, the other side could not hear me. This happened on 1/3 calls. It is ok now after replacement.

Clicking speakerphone on and off brings back call

I've been having audio issues where I sometimes get no audio after I dial a call. Hitting the speaker button and then again lets me hear the dialing tone and then the caller at the other end when they pick up. Apple actually replaced the phone a few days after I got it, but the problem quickly returned. Hopefully they'll figure this out.

Oh the joys of getting an iPhone on the day of it's release!

Either i don't pay attn, I don't have ANY trouble, or some people or picky, or I'm extremely lucky. But I've ha fantastic battery life, twice as long as my bionic, 80 times longer than my thunderbolt, and as long as my iPhone 4. To beat it all, I use this phone for an average of 5-7 hours per day. I'm thinking this issue is more of a i
How you can make a general across the board statement on the basis of one phone is highly unscientific.... nonetheless entertaining :)

wow, I thought I was the only one having all these audio issues. I was gonna go into an Apple store to exchange mine but someone told me unless I can reproduce the issue on the spot, they don't exchange it. Is this true?

I also have 2 other issues with mine:

1. whenever the phone vibrates, it produces an annoyingly high pitched sound. It goes away when I squeeze the right side of the phone while its vibrating.

2. Some thing clanks inside my phone right by the back camera module. whenever I set it down or tap it, something moves inside my phone and produces this clicking sound. I almost wanna open it up to see what the issue is:D

Anyone else have all of the issues I am having?

Audio issues, battery issues, Siri issues. And people are lined up to buy them. Marketing at it's finest. Or should it be, "And they walk among us"?

Trifecta for me

I'm experiencing all three symptoms -- static, echo, and occasional outbound calls without my voice being heard at the other end.

All three symptoms seem to be fixable by switching to speakerphone mode -- which tells me (or maybe I'm just hoping) it is strictly a software bug.

Fix it Apple! Soon, please.

Easiest way to replicate static problem

Easiest way I've found to replicate the problem without making a phone call

1) Download the speedtest.net app for the iPhone (its free)

2) Make sure Wi-Fi is off

3) Start a speedtest and hold the iPhone to your ear

You can hear the static as the data downloads

Based on his past (in)actions, no he wouldn't. He would blame these "problems" on a Google conspiracy and ignore them.
Well said.

Steve was a master finger pointer. A world class CONvincing man, who could get anyone to believe him when he blamed others (like AT&T) for the faults of his pet project.

A likable chap in the early days, yet a perfect example of the "Hollywood Syndrome" once he became rich, powerful, and famous as the fanbois rock star. He was entertaining to say the least.

The new dynamic duo is Elvis and Steve... what a pair :) :) :)

My observation is that this is an iOS5 issue and not specific to the iPhone 4S. I have had people say that they hear a beep/screech sound when using a headset. I have an iPhone 4 and not a 4S. This only began after my iOS5 upgrade.
