iPhone 5 = 4" screen?

3.5" screen forces me to scroll left and right in order to read each line of text.

This is not the Internet in your hand but a pain in the ass!

4.3" screen like the EVO = It just works!

I'm curious where you came up with your percentages.

They're just guesses.

To everyone else:

Apple only has to increase the size of the iPhone by only a couple CM to fit a 4" screen perfectly on there. Increasing the resolution to 1440x960 would have a even higher PPI, thus keeping the "pixel-less" display.

Too bad that doesn't exist. The highest thing we have right now is a 4" screen with a resolution of 1024x768 or something along those lines.

That would give a PPI of 402 even at a size of 4.3". That's completely unnecessary and would only put more strain on the processor.

personally i hope they keep the current form factor, any bigger would be too much.

wouldn't mind a slightly larger screen though, edge to edge perhaps

I hope they don't go bigger, or it will be years before i upgrade to it!

I don't want a phone that requires 2 hands to do stuff, and that is how those larger screen phones look. I have long fingers, but i don't think with a 4" screen I could hold it in my palm and reach across the screen with my thumb. And then who wants to carry something that big on their belt or in their pocket? I don't it (I tend to not carry a purse).

Anyway, how about a poll with screen sizes people want?

I’m always amused at the posters thinking a slightly bigger screen automatically means you need two hands to use it. I’d love the iPhone to go to a Droid-size screen.

I would say that may be the reason why Apple has been so careful about its next iPhone this time around; and also the delay in releasing the iPhone. If Apple needs a separate event to reveal its new iPhone, then the new iPhone must have a pretty substantial upgrade, such as a 4" screen.

Chances of features:

8MP Camera: 100% (Apple known to increase camera MP every upgrade)
New Design: 50% (if 4" screen, then yes; maybe iPad 2 design.)
4" Screen: 65% (Resolution = Three Times 480x320 = 1440x960; Keeping Developers Happy; Resolution Independence.)
RAM Increase: 75% (1GB)
Dual Core Processor: 80% (1.2GHz - 1.4GHz)

The 3.5' is fine for me. As for the resolution upgrade, not needed. Remember that the resolution is not 320x480, but 960x640, at 326 ppi. (did you forget this already?) As well, the processor will be the same 1 GHz A5 dual core that is in the iPad 2, if that is what they are going to put in it. For the RAM upgrade, maybe not this year, but for sure the iPhone 6. :)

Well, in my case I sat here, holding my ip4, added 1/2" on the diagonal and concluded that my thumb wouldn't reach across or that it would be an uncomfortable reach.

Is the screen small? heck ya, but i have used an iPad for over a year as my main browsing device - 1/2" isn't going to add much to an iPhone in my opinion.

I personally think that phones aren't an area where we need bigger devices. It's a PHONE, it needs to fit in a cup holder - and not a big gulp sized one. Smaller phone plus a tablet, or a add-on like the BB thing.

Or two devices, one normal sized, one huge for the rest of you.

You know, people used to make fun of the size of my palm treo..... Sure it's thicker than the ip4, but they are about the same width and and ip4 is taller. My old treo could be looking really really small soon!!

Depends if you use the "smart" phone to it's full potential or if you mainly just make calls, listen to music and check email occasionally. No one needs 4" for that, but if you play games, watch movies and do much Internet browsing, you can hardly argue against more screen space.

Either way, the most we'll see out of Apple (if that) is about 3.8". If anyone complains about that then they have no real use for a smart/multimedia phone.

Nope, I didn't forget; I'm basing the tripling of resolution off the original resolution (480x320). iPhone 4's resolution is doubled that, so triple that would be 1440x960.

The Xperia Arc has a 4.2 inch screen. While the phone is a bit bigger than the iPhone 4, it doesn't look clumsy and is very easy to hold and operate with one hand. I think the only company that has Apple beat in terms of mobile phone design is Sony Ericsson. Their phones are simply a delight to see and use.

If that phone ran iOS on it I would have kept it over the iPhone 4 lol.

I can.

I believe the current form factor only supports 3.7" edge to edge. But if they can do it without increasing the current chassis size, go for it.

THIS. THIS THIS THIS.

If I wanted to hold an iPad up to my head, I'd use an iPad.
So, you're equating a 4" screen to a 9.7" iPad screen. Please. Even if Apple did go 4", you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in overall size. Give Apple some credit.

Sounds like some replying in this thread have never handled a phone w/a 4" screen.

I upgraded to an Atrix from my iP3g, as I'm not a fan of the 4's ergonomics, and it was more than 6 months old already. Anyway, despite the 4" display, the phone was nearly identical to hold as the 3g and the extra screen real estate was nice to have.

I returned the Atrix due to other issues and am now waiting to see what the next iPhone offers before using my upgrade. If there's not an increase in screen size I probably will go with something else w/my upgrade...unless the rest of the phone blows me away.

Bingo. "If I wanted to hold an iP.ad up to my head, I'd use an iPad" Comparing a 4" Iphone to a 9.7" ipad is the dumbest argument I've heard.

It's an intentional exaggeration that makes a very good point. I DO NOT want a larger screen on my phone. I want it to remain EASILY pocketable. I DO NOT want an increase in the form-factor whatsoever.

I sure hope the iPhone5 has a 4" screen, will help a lot of us Android owners jump ship back to Apple. I think 4.3" is a tad too large, where as 3.5" is way too small, but the phones with 4" seem to be the perfect size, and Apple could easily do a 4" screen, without making the device itself barely any bigger than the current iPhone4.

Well thats easy, the iphone 4 has the exact size you want. So keep it!

Pretty much. My friend has a Samsung Mesmerize w/ a 4" screen. That phone is still very easily pocketable. BUT if Apple can increase the screen to even 3.8" by keeping the exact overall dimensions, that'd be great. To me and many others I know, the small screen on the iphone is the major turnoff. I'm sure they'd attract more customers by increasing the screen size rather than losing customers due to them increasing it. I'd bank money on that.
