Many of the people on this board make their money writing apps for the iPhone and iPad. That would be like saying, Who cares if you get a 50% pay cut? It's just your job.

Point taken.

I was just trying to put things in some perspective. But you are right - for some people the new phone is very important.

The longer this phone is delayed the happier I am about my decision to dump my iPhone 3G in June and buy a Refurb 4 for $99. I can't imagine myself actually spending $200 on a phone anyway...

If I had an iPhone 3GS or 3G, i would be pissed waiting for the iPhone 5. But I have an iPhone 4 which pretty much holds up to the other smart phones out there on the market so I should be fine for a while.

I see two camps here:
The iPhone 4 lovers want a delay so they can get more life out of the 4. (can't blame 'em)

The 3g/3gs people and the folks who own a 4 but are not happy with it. A further delay is infuriating.

I'm in the second camp. I passed on the 4 and have been waiting ever since for the next model. As of now, we don't know when the hell it's coming out.

That's the first thing I thought as well. I hope you are right about the LTE chips, and the delay is not for the curved glass, etc. Maybe NFC ability while they are it it. :)
Well, the longer it takes, the less likely it is that the iPhone 5 will be a mere speed bump, as some have suggested.

With respect to LTE, I certainly hope the iP5 will have the new LTE chips, but I'm unsure how likely that will be, given when they are supposed to be available.

Well, if there was a downgraded iPhone 4 for $300, why would you buy an iPod touch instead? to save $70? And as we know, apple is all about keeping their lineups small. Macbook Airs already replaced MacBooks, and soon macbook pros. Plus iPod Touch owners also buy "other" smartphones like android. And apple doesn't want that. So I really see this happening.
A phone instead of a media player will never take off in the US. Assuming (and this is an abslutely gigantic assumption) that Apple will make a cheaper version of the current gen iphone priced at similar levels to the ipod touch line, most would still not buy it as a replacement for a pmp. First off, it is currently only usable on 2 carriers (1 for 3GS, which is ancient tech anyways), and I don't see a phone usable on multiple CDMA carriers coming around anytime soon. So you would have to switch media players anytime you switched carriers? Assuming they wouldn't use it as a phone, how are you going to offer the higher capacities at such a low price? And how are they going to be able to con people into paying $200-300 ON CONTRACT for a new gen iPhone when a "cheaper version" of the last gen is $300 off contract? If they make it lower quality, no one will buy it. If they make it high quality (like ipod touches) very few will buy current gen iphones.

The market for personal media players are people who need more capacity than a phone can afford or those who do not want an iPhone because of the required data plan or some other aversion to the phone portion. Merging the two lines completely ignores these two markets and will cannibalize their more profitable line (iPhones) more than it will steal other media players' market share.

iPod touches aren't going anywhere. Not everyone wants an iPhone with a contract. And I know this may come as a shock, but not everyone has money to buy one without a contract. Just like iPads won't replace laptops, and how the iTunes store will never single-handedly kill all physical media.

Anyway, I find it strange that Apple will wait a year and a half to release a new phone.

Still on the 3G, was originally waiting for a June/July announcement... oh god, please not another month :(

Every day of delay brings greater risk of my 3G being hurled into a brick wall due to another crash, unresponsive button, screen lock when I'm trying to do something quickly... etc etc

This is going to be my first iPhone. I hope it is going to lunch sooner than that.

How about a third camp of the iphone lovers who love their 4 and have no plans on getting the 5 but are worried about the delay cause it could mean next year I'll have to wait this long after my contract runs out to get the 6?

It doesn't directly affect me but it may affect me next year. And it's going to be frustrating to have to wait til October (September is bad enough) for an upgrade (and I know I won't want to upgrade to a "year old" phone but will want one that is relatively new so I'll not want to go to the 5).

Gruber suggested that Apple may replace the iPod Touch with a low end (new) iPhone at the same price point ($229-$249) without a contract. That would mean that it could/would be sold in the same way as the current iPod Touch, but you could pop a SIM in and use it as a phone. Maybe carriers also offer free on a shorter contract as well?

I stand corrected. I didn't realize the price point would be that low. That would be really sweet. Especially since almost everything has 3G capabilities now.

My mistake, I should have clarified $300 off contract. $300 off contract is pretty close to $229 starting point of the iPod touch.

Apple just discontinued MacBooks and took out optical drive from mac minis and macbook pros are next, therefore they are almost killing physical media. iPads will replace laptops, Steve Jobs himself said PCs will be like trucks and tablets will be like cars. And after just one year, iPad is already outselling all macs combined. And hey, if they can sell an iPhone off contract for nearly as much as an iPod touch, why wouldn't you get the iPhone, just don't use it as a phone if you absolutely don't want to. Plus, people who buy iPod Touch, don't tend to buy iPhones, and that is not a good thing for Apple, because that means you are probably buying another cheap phone, which more than likely is an Android.

Well, this is just what Gruber suggested. It may merely be him musing or it may be him hinting at what's going to happen; I honestly don't know but it's exciting!

Hmm. I guess I'll get all my work done on a truck than be frustrated trying to do work on a car. And my truck will have an optical drive, USB ports, and no content will be uploaded to iCloud. :)

I was actually referring to the newest iphone (which would probably still have a price of 200-300 on contract) sales being cannibalized by this cheaper version being $300 off contract.

iPhone 5, iOS 5, September 5th?
Just +1'ing this after hearing a whisper last night about the Sprint iPhone. Also heard Sept 5th.

If that date is true, I need to start looking for a potential buyer of my iPhone 4 in a couple weeks. :D
