At least they try. My wife has a 2010 Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant; and we still cannot upgrade to anything higher! Andriod phone makers does an even lousier job support older phones! Not even 1 year old!
My collegue at work who owns HTC and LG Andriod phones has similar experience. they are stuck at their old Andriod 2.0 versions and was promised updates forever. None of them have been able to update Andriod unless they root it.
My theory is HTC, LG, Samsung doesn't make enougn profit off their old phones and don't have the resources and staff to update Andriod across all their Andriod lines. They rather stick their resources at the latest and greatest.
The only Andriod phones that appear to be upgradable are Google reference phones/development phones such as the Nexus phones, and G1.
