Likes everyone's said the back plate looks a lot better in the video than in mock ups.

On a side note I noticed that the camera is still on the same side on the back plate which makes taking photos when using the volume buttons quite a chore when your tryin not to get your fingers in the picture.

Also if I'm not mistaken it looks like the headphone jack is on the left hand side (when looking at the screen). I don't know how I feel about that as I'd rather have it on the right.

That made absolutely no sense.

Meaning... There's too much going on on the back of the phone, it doesnt look seamless as the others have. Instead of being able to appreciate the smooth curves of the iPhone 3G/S, or the sleek glass edging of the iPhone 4/S, my eyes are not drawn to anything in particular, but equally feel as if too much is going on back there. In other words it seems to lack the simplicity of the previous models. The original iPhone had one break between materials yet somehow it didn't feel as cluttered as this leaked design. Hope that helps.

BLACK METAL WILL BE A NICE CHANGE .. i wish the screen was a little wider also but oh well this will be the best iphone thus far.. so i will keep my 4S and get the 5 when it is jailbroken:cool:

It's real

After watching the video twice I'm certain this is the actual final part.

It's the first black aluminum design from Apple. which seems like a new direction for them which they seem to do with every new product.

The two tone back matches the matte aluminum of all their products other than the iPhone 4/4s. The lines on the back match the lines on the sides which looks more clean and thought out. Also, I have a feeling that it feels quite nice in the hand since the sides are the same matte finish as the back.

The new dock connector was just inevitable. It had to be updated at some point. The headphone on the bottom, which I don't personally like, makes sense because most people (I believe) keep their phone bottom up in their pocket. If you keep it top up you have to spin the phone around which is just one more opportunity to loosen your grip and drop the damn thing.

Also, why would a company put their name in the video to show a fake part? They'd be stupid to try and trick us knowing they'd be outed as fakes and their company is one to avoid because they're liars. They'd be WAY more interested in showing us the real part so we'd think, yeah, they rock, they showed us the actual part way ahead of time.. I like that company.

It seems so obvious this is the real deal.

<snip> And good luck getting a timely update whenever google eventually does address the issues. Ask anyone who has owned both. I'd be very surprised if they preferred Android.

*raises hand*

I prefer the flexibility of Android. I personally love Dolphin HD as a browser (even more than Opera Mini). And I really love desktop widgets (which may arrive in iOS6 and are a valid reason for people to jailbreak).

Micro USB doesn't support most of the pins that the current 30-pin dock connector does, such as audio line out, video out, etc. Sure, micro USB is great for charging and syncing, but lots of people use the direct line-out audio capabilities because the audio is cleaner than what goes through a pre-amp on it's way to the headphone jack. You'd lose functionality by going with USB.

You do realize that nearly every system you want to connect your iPhone/iPod to is capable of decoding media files? Consider your iPhone/iPod being a thumb drive. Problem solved.

Want playlists? I heard that .m3u will do the trick on most systems. Just export your Playlist from iTunes (yes, the function is there, no need for extra software).

2- Two tone- I'm just not a fan of this. Since this is a personal preference I doubt many will feel the same.

Most do feel the same as you (based on earlier photos), according to this poll started just over a week ago. The negative vote is currently around 66%.

I'm also one of those who was disappointed by the design, BUT… if, as a few commenters have hypothesised, this design relates to an improvement in (1) durability and/or (2) mobile reception—in other words, if this is an example of form following function—then I will gladly put aside my aesthetic grievances and applaud the improvements.

The reason I didn't upgrade to an iPhone 4 when it came out was twofold: (1) the use of breakable glass on the back, and (2) the widely publicised antenna problems. They fixed the antenna with the 4S. I'm hoping durability and reception will improve again with this release. My old 3G is getting tired and needs a rest.

i think it looks great

much better in the photos.

okay so i wanted a larger screen and we get taller.

ill buy it anyways :D

I don't understand why is MacRumors calling the new iPhone "iPhone 5"... It's the 6th generation iPhone, and it's most definitely NOT gonna be called the iPhone 5.
It's the New iPhone.

Headphone jack at the bottom???

Image

Yes headphone jack at the bottom and thank god.

I think it has been said before, but just to reiterate, moving the headphone jack apparently means that the speaker grilles are different sizes - just seems very 'un'-Apple. Other than that, seems very believable...

FAKE obviously.

No way head phone jack is in bottom.

ANyone who uses an iPhone to listen to music while running or walking will know it can't be on bottom. How are you going to listen to music if the jack is in the bottom and your phone is in your pocket?

What about sports bands? No way are apple going to make the jack on the bottom.

TOTAL FAKE

When you hold your phone, your hand is pointing upwards, but when you pick it up from/put it into your pocket, your hand is pointing downwards, so if you think about it, putting the phone in your pocket upside-down makes more sense since your hand will pick it up in the right position.

Total fake... I don't even believe this is an "official" prototype. As someone previously posted, the font used in the iPhone logo is off.

The top and bottom are different, likely radio transparent, materials. Look at all the fasteners on the inside of the case. It's still a machined "unibody" design as the structural portion of the case is machined from a single piece of aluminium, even if it's not all one piece.

I just had a look at the video again (this time fullscreen in hires) and your absolutely right. To me the dull section looks like some sort of super hard material like titanium or something. You can see a groove between the gloss as the guy in the video moves the part and it catches the light.

My only concern with "painted" aluminium would be that with all the wear a phone gets the paint is going to chip/scratch pretty quickly. Thats assuming that it is painted and the black is not some pigment / treatment that has been applied to the aluminium mix / part.

It looks awesome, slim and more resistant with the back unibody.

But I am sad they didn't switched for a bigger screen (4.5in) ...

As someone who made the jump from iPhone 3G to an HTC EVO 4G, hated it, so then picked up a Nexus S 4G with Icecream Sandwich (same Android OS as the Galazy S III minus Samsung's skins and other bloatware), I strongly suggest against that. ICS is leaps and bounds ahead of any Android system before it, but still has much more work to be done. And good luck getting a timely update whenever google eventually does address the issues. Ask anyone who has owned both. I'd be very surprised if they preferred Android.

As for this part, it is very consistent with many of the rumors we've seen.
-The thin sound is because it is an empty piece of metal with nothing to obsorb sound.
-Earphone jack loacation will be a non-issue after 3 uses, if that.
-Antennas are still in the band around the phone, it's just black now.
-Also, I suspect the display will be thinner than the 4/4s once installed. I remember reading about apple using new technology for the new displays that significantly reduce thickness of parts needed for the touchscreen of the new iPhone. What remains to be seen is will this change be visible from the exterior or just obvious on the inside of the phone for enhanced packaging of the internal parts.

None of us can know with any certainty if this is it, but I'd venture to say I'm 90% confident we are looking at the next iPhone here...

Thanks for sharing that ibeanew1. I've had an iPhone since the original, and I've been itching to try an Android phone. I was considering the Galaxy S3 if I didn't like what the new iPhone had to offer. You may have just convinced me to stick with the iPhone.

I've been happy with my original Edge iPhone, 3GS, and my iPhone 4 which I currently still use. My contract is up in August and I am ready for a new phone. I have been with at&t since 2004 and there is no LTE in Tulsa. I might switch to Verizon if it doesn't cost me any more. I still have unlimited data and text and don't want to lose that.

Fake?

iphone5.jpg

This is why I think this is a fake. Apple would never have the camera offset like that. That's crappy design.

As i told in another thread. I'm pretty sure these backplates are a controlled leak. This surely is one of those old prototype 'next-gen' iPhones in an old body in order to disguise the real iPhone. It's already a known fact Apple made/makes a lot of different designs (new parts in old bodies, other way around) just to confuse people. What's with all the sudden prototype iPhones floating around? You think Apple would just let the real iPhone leaked out there?

Happens every year and it always turns out to be the real thing. I've not once seen a part leak that turned out to be misleading. However, we did all see the bad iPhone 5 cases last year. LOL

----------

I don't like the headphone jack being moved to the bottom.

Agreed! This will get in the way from time to time. It will become annoying.

Here's what I think.

I think that this is one of the prototypes that Apple made. To fuel rumors and speculation (and steal the thunder of some other events such as the GSIII), Apple made a controlled leak with this design. Apple may also be trying to lower the expectations of people so that they will get surprised when the REAL design shows up. It's not going to be this…

:apple:

It does look off...uneven, which it obviously is.

I know we are still a ways off, but such an "un-Apple" design element would be a bit annoying to the eyes.
