Meaning... There's too much going on on the back of the phone, it doesnt look seamless as the others have. Instead of being able to appreciate the smooth curves of the iPhone 3G/S, or the sleek glass edging of the iPhone 4/S, my eyes are not drawn to anything in particular, but equally feel as if too much is going on back there. In other words it seems to lack the simplicity of the previous models. The original iPhone had one break between materials yet somehow it didn't feel as cluttered as this leaked design. Hope that helps.

Give me a break. You sound just like the people who were saying the same thing when they saw the iPhone 4 metal band with black lines in them.

"what the hell, this is so un-Apple, it looks so disjointed and not seamless. I hate the new design"

This new back part is absolutely gorgeous. The build quality looks unreal. And if you want to start talking about aesthetic appreciation, then I think the top and bottom plastic strips on the back add a very nice contrast to the anodized finishing. The way the top/bottom, Apple logo, and iPhone logo all gloss while the rest of the back is matte, has a very nice look to it. And once again, the quality of the build looks unlike anything else Apple has ever made. I thought 4 had insane build quality, this goes way beyond that.

I have a feeling a lot of you are gonna change your mind once again after you actually get one in your hands. Just like the 4.

I still can't decide if I like the headphone jack on the bottom.

It might be easier in terms of pulling your phone out of your pocket to look at the screen, but i'm just so used to having it on the top of the device.

I know it'll annoy me for sure, I use my phone in the car to listen to music. Having the jack on top is great there, having it on the bottom means I'll me mashing up cables because the phone will be squashing them.

Oh well, not eligible for an upgrade for a while anyway.

Using it with glif is going to get less cool. Well, guess they'll have to redesign it for thinness anyway.

Starting to look like the real deal tho. Havn't read the whole thread, but it seems to be material finish on the back plate as opposed to glass inserts. The material also seems to have an interesting resonance unlike Aluminum or Steel... Maybe not. Maybe just the audio... or wishful listening...

Having the headphone jack on the bottom doesn't seem logical, on the top seems like a much better location. This would more logically be the iPod Touch, as it currently has the headphone jack on the bottom. Also, I could see Apple listening to requests, and incorporating a SIM slot for 3G/4G access on the next iPod touch.

If it is the new iPhone, there must be a compelling reason as to why they would change the headphone placement, and I would hope they would share it with us.

LOL...it's funny how more people are now liking the design. When the mockups came out, everyone hated it. I love the gun-metal look. Can't wait! :)

Hi all

I like the new design so far, finally dumps that all shiny fingeprint magnet back, glass appears to have been dumped in favour of aluminium near the top and bottom (bars) and a different surface in the middle, plus the biggest change is the back which is now one piece with the frame. The antenna housing is now colour coded to the frame - no more silver / black, and this could also mean its anodised for better functionality and less attenuation when in contact with skin oil.

From the picture / video I have seen so far, I believe the back of the case maybe a touch panel or improved grip or even NFC built-in, the internal grooves inside the frame on the back are either wiring panels or some type of inductive charging system or even possible micro heat fins as the left side is where the battery will sit (long rectangular area). The secondary pick up microphone which was on top has been changed to the rear between the camera and LED flash.

Others have questioned why the size of the lens and LED have been separated. It's been discovered the F rating of the rear camera module (Sony) has been altered which would alter the lens shroud, and having the LED further separated stops light bleeding from the flash. Meanwhile the secondary pickup microphone is between these two, possible as a microphone for video recording as well - perfect positioning.

The longer (elongated) design means you have a greater viewing area, but keeping its width means you still have full access without having to use two hands. Making it wider also makes it more difficult to use single-handedly. The bottom has some drastic changes, new Mini USB connection port which matches the UK 30 pin adapter here: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD099 and this mean the speaker / microphone area (if not dual speakers) is larger and will produce better audio.

I noticed on the right side of the frame there are two to three flat circular screw plates / thread plates which indicates a PCB or other component will be screwed to the chassis. The relocation of the headphone jack to the bottom matches up wtih the iPod touch etc and allows more valuable space to be freed at the top.

For those of you think this is real:

You have to explain why Apple hasn't had these shots and videos taken down.

If they are real, Apple would probably have HAD to pursue legally. NDA's work in two directions.

If company A is allowed to freely disregard the NDA, company B, likewise with an NDA, may say something to the effect, "Apple's not enforcing these things anymore and we can make a crap ton telling all these other guys what the secret design is, so let's leak."

This isn't good for Apple...why have NDA's at all if you're not going to enforce them?

Also, this is intellectual property we're talking about. You have to enforce your rights or risk losing them (true in almost all law, but especially so in IP). These are called trade secrets, and you can't enforce them on one person/entity while you've allowed your "secret" to otherwise become public. This is the reason for a TON of IP litigation.

What other company do you know who more rigorously defends it's IP? Why would they stop now?

I kind of like this look, so convince these are real.

all of those pictures and videos are in China or another country I think. Too much troublesome to have them taken down. And I don't think companies make those efforts, either. Like when a Samsung or HTC or Sony phone leaked, the pictures and videos are just there.

I'm wondering if the difference in material half way through the back panel of the new iPhone may have something to do with NFC?

*raises hand*

I prefer the flexibility of Android. I personally love Dolphin HD as a browser (even more than Opera Mini). And I really love desktop widgets (which may arrive in iOS6 and are a valid reason for people to jailbreak).

Valid point. The flexibility is what I do like... Though that very flexibility is one of the things that leads to usability issues. It has always been clear to me with andorid that often the left hand doesn't now what the right hand is doing.

Widgets would be cool. Does anyone who is reading this use the spotlight function? I've always thought that would be more useful as a dashboard of sorts such as with OSX.

FAKE obviously.

No way head phone jack is in bottom.

ANyone who uses an iPhone to listen to music while running or walking will know it can't be on bottom. How are you going to listen to music if the jack is in the bottom and your phone is in your pocket?

What about sports bands? No way are apple going to make the jack on the bottom.

TOTAL FAKE

No problem. Just flip it up side down.

There is SO much going on Monday: iOS 6, OS X 10.8, new Macs, presumably a whole lot of 'em, and a key note can only go on for so long. Also I don't see Apple blowing it's entire product-line wad in one shot mid-way into the year. The iPhone is Apple's biggest money maker. It's going to want to give it it's own party.
This makes the most sense. It's just really surprising to see such concrete evidence of the next generation iPhone so soon before a launch. I don't remember seeing any parts leaks this significant so far ahead of an actual product launch before.

Also if the Mac lineup is going to be getting a complete refresh as rumored, where are those leaks at?

So basically because you like the design that makes it real? Honestly how can any of us comment on build quality based on an internet video of an unfinished part, and something we don't even know for sure is a real Apple design? For me a two-tone back with aluminum and shiny glass/plastic or whatever that is is not "gorgeous". And it seems a step back to earlier iPhone designs where they had to have the black band because of the antenna. If this is the best they can come up with then keep the iPhone 4S design, IMHO.

Obviously fake. I mean, it's so difficult to put your phone in your pocket upside down. No way they would move the jack...impossible.

Good question. Since the rumors are new macs being released at WWDC how come we haven't seen any Mac hardware leaks? It seems odd that we'd see leaks of a phone most likely not released until September or October and zero leaks of new Macs which could be on sale within the month.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Plugging a cable into the bottom and then setting the phone down (usually in cup holder) means bending that cable.

What are the chances that the new dock connector will support Thunderbolt?

Why would you want to have to pay $50 for a cable to connect your iPhone? I sure hope it's not Thunderbolt based. With the electronics required at each end of the Thunderbolt cable, i don't see them being available for cheap for a good long time. Nor do I see the need for Thunderbolt speeds. What is the max transfer rate for the flash memory? USB3 should be adequate. Most people likely do wireless transfers now anyway.

Believe me... you'll live. Its all what you're used to.
I started on a touch and found the jack on top to be clumsy and ugly when I got my first iPhone.
It makes no sense to have to flip the phone upside down to go into a pocket the way it is now. Its just something we've gotten used to.

I think this new design totally nails it.

I'm not buying it.. Remember Tim told that they will double the "secrecy" this is not yet the so called iPhone 5
