All that performance from a thinner/lighter package; a testament to superb engineering and design.

Thinner and lighter has nothing to do with CPU (and A6) is quite a big chip. It has everything to do with skimping on baseband chips (one compared totwo in Android phones), RAM, NFC chip, battery size, wireless charging and memory card/port.

It's funny how a dual-core beats a Tegra 5-core. Wait, 5-core? Yes. Tegra 3 uses a 5th low-clocked, low-powered core to do general computing. And then there are 4 high-performance cores, to do the heavy lifting.

This is a engineering masterpiece. Well done Apple. Very, very well.

...and the short bus shows up right on time.

The benchmark is a good reference for potential of the new CPU/GPU (not so much as a comparison to non iOS devices). Given what the 4S/iPad "3rd gen" can do, this will make a pretty stout SOC for video/image processing, gaming, etc., all with decent power consumption.

I'd imagine we'll see an "A6X" platform in the next full sized, retina iPad[?]

Not sure why everyone is going crazy worrying about specs right now...I thought Apple users don't care about specs...(unless we're is winning of course, I forgot).

I don't believe the fact that the A6 is faster than the Exynos or Tegra chip is that interesting. Great, a next-generation architecture is better than a 1+ year old cortex-A9 architecture, how amazing, lets all care about specs now .

The real comparison that should be pointed out is the HTC One S, which looks to be the only Snapdragon S4 chip on that list of Android benchmarks. Both are current-generation, customized cores (both dual), and the A6 distances itself pretty far ahead with 50% less clock speed.

If this leak is real, the A6 should be a very interesting contender for the next year with the upcoming cortex-A15 based chipsets. Good job Apple.
Most apple users don't care about specs; yet this article serves as a great way to shut those fandroids who keep claiming 'apple is playing catch-up' up.

So, u mad bro?

At the end of the day, it isn't about the specs. If it were, Apple would have spent far more time on Wednesday talking up the A6 rather than just giving some vague language about it being twice as fast and showing times for certain tasks. However, it does indicate that Apple's engineers are capable of some pretty good CPU designs.

Wow, what a surprise, a phone that is about to be released has a slightly better performance than the S3...

Reactions here are amusing.

Fandroids have been comparing the S III to the new iPhone since it was announced. Saying the S III was better and whatnot. So when proof comes to light that the S III is slower then it is perfectly reasonable to point it out. They opened the door.

who gives a crap about spec sheets? ... specs don't matter, its all about the user experience, right?

I wanted a bigger screen, apple came up short .. I'm going android.

Woah, looking at the benchmarks -- the iPhone 5 has twice the performance of the new iPad?!

That's … that's actually immoral.

But yeah, it's pretty darn good to see Samsung's flagship phone obliterated in the specs sheet, when taking into consideration their earlier advert. I really don't think they expected this one to be that powerful (heck, neither did I!)

Yet as the Macbook air will prove over and over, people care way more about aesthetics and a nice slim package then all the junk that you just mentioned.

Memory card port? I suppose they should have also added a physical keyboard, cd tray and floppy disc port lol.

Memory Card....lol

Looking up the list of the competition that would mean that - if these numbers are true - the iPhone 5 would be the fastest phone on the market.

Nothing infuriates me more than Fandroids looking at spec sheets to determine what is better. OBVIOUSLY Android phones need more under the hood to compete with an iPhone with lower raw specs. That is clear.

The link to the Android list:

EDIT: Its even beating their tablets. The only thing that comes close is the Nexus 7 and the SIII but the iPhone beats them both.

That's very true. The uniformed spec hounds won't believe the benchmark scores or they'll say benchmark scores have nothing to do with performance...cuz quad core is more the dual, so it's gotta be better!!! - sigh

But Apple is catching up. Isn't this a catchup? An unreleased iPhone model is faster than previously-released Android-based phones. The iPhone 4S was slower than those Android models. Apple is catching up here. They won't be ahead for long on this.

I'm not part of some kind of Apple vs Samsung fan war, but it's not fair to compare the iPhone 5 to the S3 when the iPhone 5 has not come out yet. I don't care if Samsung fans are making comparisons.

OK, OK. Please embargo all these comments until 8:00AM Friday in Singapore when the iPhone 5 is officially for sale. :)

Soooo how do these stack up to computers from about 5 years ago? They can't be that far apart right? Is there a way to compare the 2 platforms?

According to GeekBench - it's about the same as a 2004 Mac Pro G5 - which was a dual core 1800 MHz processor.

So what solution do you propose for a better comparison? all companies should release their high-end smartphones in the same month or something?

You are missing the point here. The iPhone is able to pack more power and more battery life inside a smaller enclosure than those atrocious samsung huge phones.

iPhone 4s screen 3.5", iPhone 5 4.0"

Does the math escape you, or were you hoping to hold a tablet up to your ear?

The MacBook Air is for people who want a very portable computer, possibly for business. Who needs fast computing parts when you're just doing basic stuff? It still runs the fantastic Mac OS on it. I'd take a MacBook Air with Mac OS over a fast Dell laptop with Windows 7. I use my MacBook Bro, a beat-up and slow '06 MacBook, at school instead of the top-notch Windows PCs they have.

The MacBook Air is NOT the PC for me, though. I'm a desktop user. I even dislike the new iMac because it's so much harder to open than the old iMac. I use a 2008 Mac Pro. More power than I need, easier to open than I could have imagined.

I dont care about the numbers or the competition.....the iPhone 4 and 4s have been plenty zippy enough for me, and yet in the preview videos the new phone was noticeably snappier than the 4/4s. These tests don't surprise me in the least. This new phone is going to be amazing.

Obliterated? With one benchmark score higher by 2%? While at the same time offering 2x RAM, NFC, simultaneous voice and data, wireless charging, higher screen resolution, higher memory capacity. It's pretty clear that SGS3 is a superior phone.

The US version of the GSIII use the Qualcomm Snapdragon which is the same as the HTC One S, but with 2 GB of RAM. My guess is that it scores no higher than 1400 on Geekbench.
