This part would make me rage: "Trust us, we will be able to get you the phone you want – maybe not as fast as you might want, but likely as fast as anyone else at this point."

I don't know about about the process to know whose fault it is, but that would enrage me. You won't get it as fast as all the places fulfilling their orders, or as fast as you might have if you went elsewhere.

Haha I know what time it is in the westcoast...but looking at some of the pictures on here some stores have gigantic lines already and have for a few hours now.

my sprint fer sure wont get packed that is why i will try going but idk best luck to me ima go early morning to see if sprint will get me it

i know i was like people that did no pre order will get there tomm for shure at a apple store suckss!!

Best Buy's biggest gaffe in this whole ordeal is the lack of damage control. There was no compensation nor other alternatives. Just a crude email on the eve of the phone's launch.

There wasn't even an "Okay, this model won't be in stock, but we can offer you this model."

I'll take another color and capacity at this point, but don't just leave me out in the cold.

It doesn't even sound particularly apologetic. Like "well you're not out the cash yet so no big". There was a deposit, right? Why on earth wouldn't they offer to return that?

I've pre-ordered from BB the last 3 years and never had this problem. Now this year I get an email saying they didn't get enough of my model. I was the third person in line so that's kinda strange, unless they didn't get any at all. I wonder if employees are able to order before customers.

It definitely sucks. But I guess I can't blame Best Buy. I'm gonna head out at 8am and hopefully get lucky at another store. Otherwise I'll have to be patient.

Because, every launch this happens. There is always an overwhelming demand. They take as many preorders as possible promising a 9/21 date, then send emails out like this. It's laughable because it sort of is Best Buys fault, every year they have limited stock and every year they over sell. When I worked in retail when I'd order or preorder something for a Customer, it would push dates back in real time as stock dwindled. You can use the overwhelming demand statement all day the system worked fine even on Black Fridays, with a couple hiccups for stock in the store through the whole holiday season but as a company it's their job to have a Ball park number of the units allocated to a certain store.

It's stated from the second you preorder that you are NOT guaranteed a phone on launch day BECAUSE they arent sure of the quantities they will get...

That is true. This is the first time I've ever missed out on a launch-day phone from Best Buy. I think in the future it might be a good idea for Best Buy to call it a reservation rather than a pre-order. Pre-order carries with it the implication that you are ordering something that will be available. At least if they called it a reservation it makes it sound like you are reserving the first available, or where ever you were in line.

I received the same email...not much you can do except wait...who knows maybe not receiving one from the initial build cycle will mean no scratches, dents or dings as being reported on other posts...my 4S works just fine, my new toy will arrive soon enough...

I'm thinkin the same thing. I'll gladly wait an extra week or whatever to see what happens with "scuff gate" as it's being called. Even though to me all the pics look more like scratches/dings than scuffs.

Bestbuy didn't get any 16's

Inventory manager from my store texted saying no 16's. Must've been in high demand during pre order.

For people that pre-ordered when did you get your confirmation email? I didn't get mine until the 15th. Maybe their employee's put their pre-orders in first.

Just spoke with best buy mobile, they told me pre-orders will be fulfilled first. There will be no walk in purchases unless that stock wasn't already pre-ordered. My 64gb VZW wasn't there today...

PR Nightmare

OK, I've asked this question in other threads and I'll ask it here:

Why is it Best Buy's fault that Apple didn't supply them with enough inventory to fulfill all of their preorders?

Here's a dose of reality for you: if you didn't preorder straight from Apple in the first 1-2 hours after they started taking orders, you'd be in the same boat. This has nothing to do with Best Buy and everything to do with overwhelming demand.

The problem is that while their advertising notes in the fine print that you may not get your iPhone on launch day, the majority of the message makes it sound like you will. If this were their first iPhone launch, it would be forgivable: Apple shorted them - not their fault. However, after getting my 28 days email, I trolled the internet and found that they've had the same problem EVERY iPhone launch they've done.

My question is if they know they'll likely not be able to supply hardly anyone with the phone, why don't they advertise it that way. "We know you're excited to get your hands on the next big thing, and we want to be the ones to put it in your hands. However, we have no control over the stock sent to us by Apple, and while we will get you an iPhone within a month of launch day, we probably can't get it to you from day one." Something like that. They've created a PR nightmare for themselves.

*Note: I don't mean putting that in the terms and conditions. I mean putting up front in plain sight and requiring employees to inform people.

I ordered one Black and one White (both 16 GB AT&T). For the Black I got the pickup confirmation email and a call to schedule the appointment. For the White I got the "sorry we don't have enough" email. I ordered these consecutively on Friday afternoon.

I'm starting to think there's just a problem manufacturing the White.

Update on Availability

It isn't just Best Buy. I've been running around to other stores like Walmart and everyone had the same thing happen: they took preorders expecting to be able to fill most of them and then found out they were only getting 1 or 2 or 5 phones per store.

My unwarranted guess is that Apple sold so many that they ended up keeping more for themselves than planned to meet demand and shorted third-party retailers to do it. Whoever you are, manager at my local Best Buy, you were just spared a strongly-worded conversation about ethics.

Again - how is it Best Buy's fault?

Best Buy has no way to predict how many iPhones they will be receiving in each store until they actually receive them. So tell us how they can limit the number of preorders to a quantity that cannot be predicted?

At this point most of you are hating on Best Buy because you're looking for a convenient scapegoat. Best Buy has done nothing wrong. Next time stay up late and preorder from Apple if you're that anxious to have your iPhone on release day.

You were given a warning when you preordered that there was no guarantee of receiving a phone today. What more do you want done?

best buy called me last night to inform me the 64GB black I pre-ordered (last friday, so I know I was one of the first ones) did not get delivered.

That's all they said. no expected delivery or anything. And I did not get an email... just a phone call late last night...

and im screwed because I already "sold" my current iPhone 4 on craigslist and had to tell the lady I can't now... at least until Monday??

Ugh i hope I can still sell this......... ugh **** you best buy why do you promise me a phone and then not get it???!

Again, my problem isn't that it happened once. It's that they knew it would happen again and didn't put any advertising in a more prominent place or require salespeople to inform people it would likely not happen on launch day. It's a marketing issue, and that's the only thing I'm saying they did wrong. I'm not blaming them for a supplier issue, but rather the way they are presenting the issue to consumers.

How did they know it was going to happen again when there is no way to predict how many units they would get from Apple?

The warning that there was no guarantee of getting a phone on launch day was prominently placed on its website. You didn't answer my question - what more should Best Buy have done that would satisfy you?

Preordering from anywhere does not guarantee anything.

It's your own fault for jumping the gun. Don't blame anyone but yourself for this.

You're delusional. Best Buy promised you a phone. That's it. They didn't promise you a phone on a particular day. Just wait long enough and you'll receive the phone they promised you.

People warned against ordering from places like Walmart....

Given that many of us weren't awake between 3 and 4 am to preorder through Apple's website, these retail partners really did give us the best chance of a launch day phone.

It's stated from the second you preorder that you are NOT guaranteed a phone on launch day BECAUSE they arent sure of the quantities they will get...

When I preordered mine I did it in store not looking at any fine print, the guy reassured me since I was one of the first to pre order I'd be fine. Low and behold it wasn't there when I went to to pick It up. It's best to do all big launch products through apple even if you have to wait for the second batch
