Numbers louder than words

For all the trolls...

Surface area of iphone
26.81 in^2 (4.87,2.31,0.3)

Surface area of 1/10 of a pencil point
(0.5mm/10/2.54/10)Pi = 0.0062in^2
0.5mm being the diameter of a typical lead mechanical pencil and 1/10 of that.

26.81/0.0062=~4300
So if my calculation and logic are correct
1/4300 of my iphone is nicked/stretched/damaged

Cheapest iphone5 $650 I paid retail.

Typical Porsche Surface area.
Approx 30000 in^2 (do your own calculation)

so If your brand new cheapest Porsche that you can find Retail for 75000
(30000/26.81*650)
has paint/widow/rim damage of 1/4300 of your total car, that you'd be okay?

Which translate into 30000*(1/4300)=6.98 in^2
Which also equal to Almost two quarter sized damage. (0.955*3.14)=3in^2

Bottom line
I will not sit here and purchase a Porsche with any damage, esp 2 quarter size worth of anything.

So if I PayPal you $0.12 cents you'll stop whining about pinheads on your iPhone 5?

Porsches aren't designed to sit in a pants pocket with loose change or a purse with loose keys. No one should expect a Porsche with paint blemishes. Everyone expects their cellphones to get scuffed.

I got my ip5 64 GB Black yesterday at the apple store.

They opened it for me and i looked it over and saw two small spec issues on the band.

I asked if i could replace with another and they opened another one. This one was sizeably chipped on the bottom chamfer.

They said they couldn't open any more so i had to pick between the two flawed phones lol.

They then went on to say that the process of creating the phones is so difficult that if we opened 25 more boxes for you, you would find a flaw in every single phone.

They also said that only about 20/100 you would find no flaws.

These were apple store employees.

I still cant believe they said this to me as i was buying the phone.

Unreal.

So did you walk out, or did you take one of the damaged phones?

While that's a reasonable expectation, if the reality is that it's going to have scuffs 10 minutes after you own it why does it matter if they're there 10 minutes before? You want the right to scuff it yourself or something? Apple depriving you of that fun?

If there are thousands of these in the wild and people aren't complaining its because they understand that scuffing cellphones is inevitable. What comes out of the box has 'issues' the size of a pinhead, it's not a concern considering what happens a few minutes later when Mrs. Camry puts it in her purse.

BJ

Yes I want the right to scratch it myself. Would I accept a new car with a chunk of the bumper missing or a key scratch down the side? Nope. What I do with it after I drive out of the parking lot is on me. When I pull it out of that box, it better live up to the hype.

As mentioned with a lot of people mine arrived with 2 scuff marks (black warn down to silver)
I mulled it over for a few days and after getting quite a few more scuff marks with the phone doing nothing more than resting in my hand or pocket I decided to ring Applecare.

They have decided to swap the phone but I most provide photographic evidence of the damage. I've asked for a white one in replace and I've basically told em I'm holding on to this one until the new one arrives at my door.

I actually felt quite petty for complaining about this but then I thought if this is like this after a few hours whats it gonna look like after a few months. The admiral thing about apple products is that they depreciate in value very little. Sadly with this phone it wouldn't be the case.
For £529. This phone should be premium in every way.

Porsche argument doesn't fly. This is a super mass produced consumer electronic product. If you want engineering tolerances that tight on a product that is this small, you better expect to pay a lot more.

When apple throws out lines like, " Never before has this degree of fit and finish been applied to a phone." and "made with a level of precision you'd expect from a finely crafted watch", then yes the Porsche argument makes perfect sense.....

I guess some are still blinded by the Apple light...

How come this is starting now? Why no iPhones, 3Gs, 3GSs, 4s and 4Ss were found scuffed right out of the box? Are we supposed to suddenly accept a quality decrease with the same price? (Even higher in some countries).

So you're going to go back to the Apple Store 100 times if you have to in order to get a 'perfect' one out of the box so that 10 minutes later you can put it in your car's cupholder and scuff it yourself.

Brilliant.

You are missing the point. Totally missing the point. Again, this is why the term 'sheep' is often used. As long as Apple says they are fine, they are fine.

To answer your question. Yes, I'd go back until I found one that was in the condition that was promised. You know, the whole "Never before has this degree of fit and finish been applied to a phone." and "made with a level of precision you'd expect from a finely crafted watch" thing......

That is pure ********. It's made in China on an assembly line like most of the products you buy.

The problem comes from the fact that it is BLACK. It's just like a black car, it shows defects you wouldn't normally see.

I'm not arguing with you to tell you you are wrong, I'm just trying to put some of you at ease so you don't spend time worrying about something like this. It's draining...I know from experience!

How many days do users have to swap a black iPhone 5 for a white one? Do I have to go to an apple store or can I call apple and request a white one? Can anyone speak from experience?

It may be B.S., but if they are going to throw those taglines out there, then they need to live up to them. If not, they just need to not say anything about how well it is or isn't built.

Why do you assume everyone is going to scratch their phone? My 4 and 4S both looked perfect after having them for a year (16 months for the 4) so why would I want the resale value of my phone hurt the day I get it? My 11 month old 4S looks better than my new 5 and I haven't even scratched the 5. It came with 2 nicks. Apple makes great products but they shouldn't get a pass just because of who they are. If I bought any electronics new and they had a noticeable scratch or nick then they would go right back to the store. The only difference is that if it was a Samsung product nobody would call me crazy for wanting a brand new product to look new.

He is missing the point because most of the people who says its ok have not seen the actual iPhone 5.

Anyone who has held the iPhone 5 , and have seen the problems in store with multiple iPhones 5, specially the black model will understand the situation.

So did you walk out, or did you take one of the damaged phones?

I took the first one with the least damage. I was in there for over 2 hours, did not want to go through the hassle of going in again to possibly get a completely perfect one.

The other issue was risking going in at another point and getting one that was even worse then the two i checked out.

We get it, you are fine with the condition of your phone. Why are you still here? Enjoy your phone, and leave those who want to discuss scuffs/marks/damage alone. If going back to an Apple store to return the phones with marks is ridiculous and a waste of time, how much more ridiculous and time wasting is you continuing to argue with people?

No. I'll give you 17 dollars discount to take my damaged Porsche.
That's why people buy brand new stuff. After car drive off the lot you lose 10%. But I pay that 10% for a reason. Because that 10% ensures me that the dealership will take full responsibility at that moment.
If you will accept that 17 dollars and take your brand new Porsche now with a quarter size damage.... Good for you.

There is clearly something wrong on the assembly line other than the phone being black, my wife's white ip5 came scratched, dinged, and with blue edges to the white parts

My 4S still looks flawless to date. I dont understand how people can give Apple a pass on this with the iPhone 5. The phones should not have dents, nicks, or deep scratches out of the box. I dont care if the item is mass produced.

They quote, "Never before has this degree of fit and finish been applied to a phone." Apple should be able to mass produce the iPhone 5 shell with little to no defects. If Apple cannot produce a product that is defect free, then change the process and more importantly the marketing.

I brought mine in to the GB yesterday and the replacement had more scuffs than my original, I passed.

Im going to wait about a month as hopefully the newer ones wont have any issues.

People getting replacements: Can you please report back on the condition the units are?

thanks

I presently own 3 iPads, 5 iPhones, 3 Apple TV's, 10+ iPods, 1 Airport Express, 1 MacBook, and 1 iMac.

I think back to the iPod Nano or iPod Touch when they first came out with their chrome backs and edges. Common sense said that those surfaces would get scratched if you placed them in a jeans pocket with or without coins/keys or down on a table. The fronts of those products never scratched, screens and control surfaces perfect. The first day you owned your Nano or Touch it was scuffed. There was no attempt at "Scuffgate". Customers knew the reality.

My iPod Nano 1 is in a drawer with pens and pencils, sliding around as an afterthought, hasn't been used in more than 5 years. Yet I could charge it up and it would work beautifully right this moment. The chrome is all scratched, but the front and screen and scroll wheel good as new.

A what quality score do you give my iPod Nano 1? A "3" because its all scratched up or a "10" because it functions as-new?

BJ

Most iPhone customers do not care about the bezel. It's the screen that matters. They understand that all mobile devices that live in pants pockets, purses, or car cupholders will get scuffed on the edges or on the back. It's not unexpected. A few dents the size of a pin aren't considered 'bad'. They're considered normal.

BJ

What a load if ********.

No normal person would expect their device to scratch from contact with normal usage items like pants.

This is neither 2007 with the iPod Nanos (that Apple fixed and was sued out of court for immediate scratches) nor a product that should expect to be scratched from normal usage.

Just because you are clearly a bumbling buffoon does not mean the rest of us are.
