Porsche argument doesn't fly. This is a super mass produced consumer electronic product. If you want engineering tolerances that tight on a product that is this small, you better expect to pay a lot more.

Find one that flies.
With failure rate at 40% what would the the accepted risk for you? Based on surface area alone the comparison works.
This phone is the high end of the phone world, isn't it? Highest price wise? Did I take a 1million dollar car as a comparison? Which there are plenty..

I presently own 3 iPads, 5 iPhones, 3 Apple TV's, 10+ iPods, 1 Airport Express, 1 MacBook, and 1 iMac.

I think back to the iPod Nano or iPod Touch when they first came out with their chrome backs and edges. Common sense said that those surfaces would get scratched if you placed them in a jeans pocket with or without coins/keys or down on a table. The fronts of those products never scratched, screens and control surfaces perfect. The first day you owned your Nano or Touch it was scuffed. There was no attempt at "Scuffgate". Customers knew the reality.

My iPod Nano 1 is in a drawer with pens and pencils, sliding around as an afterthought, hasn't been used in more than 5 years. Yet I could charge it up and it would work beautifully right this moment. The chrome is all scratched, but the front and screen and scroll wheel good as new.

A what quality score do you give my iPod Nano 1? A "3" because its all scratched up or a "10" because it functions as-new?

BJ

Not at all, I have the original Ipod, the very first nano 1 like you, and I was more then happy for the chrome to scratch. Its what happens to chrome bits, same as aluminium bits, I have never used a cover on my apple products. I do have an issue with anodised parts, cause unlike chrome/aluminium, they look like crap with use, that is why after owning one watch that was PVD, I will never got another one, I got so annoyed, I ended up getting ceramic. I also have watches in SS and even with scratches they look damn good

. . . They said they couldn't open any more so i had to pick between the two flawed phones lol.

They then went on to say that the process of creating the phones is so difficult that if we opened 25 more boxes for you, you would find a flaw in every single phone.

They also said that only about 20/100 you would find no flaws.

These were apple store employees . . . .

Unbelievable, that is absolutely disgusting customer service & just shows the problem is getting bigger until new stocks arrive.

I got a white 16gb and thank god it came flawless, does anyone have any scuffs with the white ones or all of the reported cases have been with the black one.

34 production week and the factory was C3.

I baby my gadgets really well. My 4s is spotless. The 4 was too.

My 5, since Friday, has 3 scratches on the on black metal that wraps around the phone and it is showing white/silver.

Oh well.

No more stress though! use that sucker like it was meant to be used.

Apple try to do something nice for you lot and all you do is cry like babies. At this rate Johnny ives is going to say ****** it and you can all have your peice of ***** plastic phone....and go home.

I actually don't want to return my wife's white ip5 with multiple defects out of the box, including a 2 inch scratch across the back. I'd much rather Ives autograph it as a consolation. This way I'd know he saw how many defects came on one phone.

I love his designs. But I'm not a fan of the way he talks about them in the promo videos. Apple should really tone those videos down or they will continue to invite this scrutiny.

My 4S still looks flawless to date. I dont understand how people can give Apple a pass on this with the iPhone 5. The phones should not have dents, nicks, or deep scratches out of the box. I dont care if the item is mass produced.

They quote, "Never before has this degree of fit and finish been applied to a phone." Apple should be able to mass produce the iPhone 5 shell with little to no defects. If Apple cannot produce a product that is defect free, then change the process and more importantly the marketing.

Same here. I have never had an iPhone or iPad show up looking used. Even the refurbished iPad 2 I bought looks better than my 5. I can't pay over 400 for something that looks like that. I like Apple and will continue to buy their products but I won't give them a pass on poor quality control. There is really no excuse for that. Obviously a lot of phones showed up looking brand new so it was just sloppiness with some of the phones. Even if they didn't make the comment about the degree of fit and finish I would still hold them to a new product looking new. I can't for the life of me figure out why some people are so bothered by this thread. We are not saying the iPhone sucks or that Apple sucks. We just want a flawless phone. It shouldn't be this difficult.

My 4 was spotless and that was after more than two years of using it as I don't do one year upgrades.

Just opened my iP5. It has a tiny nick on the chamfer near the sleep wake button. It's about 0.5mm long.

Don't think I'll return it, can live with something that small.

I just opened my iPhone 5. It has a speck-of-dust sized nick on the edge near the power button. It also has two slightly larger nicks along the edge near the volume buttons. There is also a nearly microscopic bare spot on the rear.

None of these matter to me. They literally look like specks of dust on the phone. I may touch them with the tip of a sharpie, but I'm not sure. I'm definitely not returning the phone, since everything else seems to be in order. Home button is solid. Camera lens aligned. Speakers and mic work.

Not having a hard a** boss walking around demanding perfection is starting to effect the products.

I will not believe any of the beta phones suffered no scratches while in use. Poor R and D.

The other problem is OK, you got Apple to give you a undamaged phone. What happens when the phone scratches in a week?

We're the scratches there out of the box? Because the black anodizing does NOT scratch off easily. If u look at my thread where I purposely tried to scratch a display model you will see that it's pretty damn durable. Anything will scratch, but after seeing how durable it is, I'm not worried on bit about it being damaged with normal use.

I just opened the box to find a small ding on one edge of my white iPhone, just my luck.

I got it from Carphone Warehouse, so I presume I will have to call them to arrange and exchange, or will I have to contact my network provider?

And as it seems to be out of stock everywhere, will I be able to hold on to this one until they come back into stock?

Gutted.

Has anyone tried taking a Sharpie to the shiny edge? That might cover up the aluminum showing through

Lol I use to do this on my Aluminum Macbook Pro....Using "Silver Sharpie.":D

3 Days in: Anyone still have a perfect naked iPhone?

I'm just curious. It's been 3 days now. Any of you rocking a naked iPhone and still have no scuffs or scratches on the aluminum?

Question applies to black and white models alike. I just want to see if there is any hope that the issue is just for a possibly flawed batch.

Most iPhone customers do not care about the bezel. It's the screen that matters. They understand that all mobile devices that live in pants pockets, purses, or car cupholders will get scuffed on the edges or on the back. It's not unexpected. A few dents the size of a pin aren't considered 'bad'. They're considered normal.

BJ

So you're going to go back to the Apple Store 100 times if you have to in order to get a 'perfect' one out of the box so that 10 minutes later you can put it in your car's cupholder and scuff it yourself.

Brilliant.

BJ

Fantastic posts!!!

That's not considered normal. It's considered as bad quality checking by Foxconn. Fair enough scuffs may occur during normal day to day usage. However, dents and gouges out of the new box brand new! That's not acceptable - No matter how many apple products you have.

I've been rocking mine since Friday with no case.. No issues at all not even a little nick.

I'm pretty careful with where my phone is and what is near it though.

Went golfing on Saturday and put it in the same area as metal ball markers and wooden Tee's... not even a scratch.
