Yes, click in and take a look at the red circled area. Dust is easily wiped off, scuffs are not. Also, that is a nano-SIM slot, not a micro-SIM.

I can understand why you're not concerned about the nicks though, since you only paid $399 for a subsidized phone. You might as well be leasing your car or renting your home :

I own both my homes with a modest mortgage on each for tax purposes per my accountant.

I paid $399 for my iPhone 5 as its disposable after 2 years and not an investment.

I lease my cars because it costs more than owning and wealthy people can afford it.

I don't use a microscope to find specks of dust in an effort to recoup a $35 AT&T activation fee as I have morals and don't need the money.

hm.. I have some very different stats in Toronto
70% male use their iPhones without any cases
99% females put their iPhones in a case

Anyway, It's a shame that the aluminum isn't as durable as the ones found on MacBooks; of course it's an issue, apple makes about $500 per phone, with such a high profit margin, cheaping out on something like this is simply unacceptable.

apple makes a gross profit margin of around 50% +/- on an iPhone and the iPhone sales account for nearly 60% of sales....

( the other 40% for sales = 30% is macs, apple tv and 10% for ipads)

my guess would be that apple is freaking out right now....no one knows yet how big this problem is and by Friday it will be in even more countries....

Bolt, by your logic I could take your phone from you, set it on the concrete and rub it around, it still functions, its simply not cosmetically 100% anymore. As a consumer paying for anything from a $5 pair of sunglasses, to a new Audi S5, I paid for it. Any damage will be from me. I have the sole right to damage it or super baby it so it looks new forever. My iphone 4 is about 3 years old now and is still in perfect condition. This issue was no present on the 4, so why would any consumer accept a downgrade in terms of fit and finish? As models progress through the years they usually improve, that is the image Apple sells to its consumers.

I was saying that you might as well rent your home or lease your cars, not that you actually do. With the way you throw around the 50k number, I assumed you owned your car.

So you actually lease? You're more similar to the high schoolers around here who drive base luxury cars than I initially thought. They're not really 'your cars', they're BMW Financial's ;)

'Wealthy people' can afford to pay for the entire car in one go, and drive off the lot with the title in the glove box. Even if they do lease for tax purposes, they wouldn't be driving a 3 series (a low end 3 series at that).

I don't use microscopes to find specks of damage either- my picture which you quoted was taken from a normal camera. It's very obvious in person as it's bright silver against black.

What are you on about with the activation fee? I don't even use AT&T, and I'm fairly certain this issue isn't what people are basing their activation fee waiver request on. This doesn't even have anything to do with the carrier.

Please welcome me to the #scuffgate club!

Bought 2 ip5 32gb black from the apple store - didn't open it in the store since we were in a hurry. Once we got home, we noticed both phones with dings on the aluminum... Called apple store - they were "out of stock" but miraculously could get 2 placed on hold for me after hearing my issue. Went to the store, they got the 2 new boxes out... anddddddd DOH... both those NEW phones came with designer scuffs - the manager denied to keep changing phones for me after the first round. I just asked him what the return policy is and how long do i have... 30 days! Well, I'll go back in 20 days and see if this issue is just related to the specific batch they had at the store.

And now, Mr. Ive - This is just ridiculous - why design something that can get damaged so easily? All the hype in your video about how precise the manufacturing process is - and it just gets damaged in shipping? Or perhaps your state of the art process is not really that state of the art? Stop designing phones that need to be carried inside oven mits - give us something we can hold up with pride and have it be more scratch proof than this.

I agree, this BJ kid and his geo metro/tracphone need to move on, no one is taking you seriously and you fail to compose any valid points time and time again.

I'm still waiting on my $50 baller!

Terrible QC

I have just received the replacement for my iPhone 5. It is even worse than the first one. I called Apple. The guy is very nice and helpful. He said he will send another replacement and monitor the whole process this time. He assured that the next one will be no problem. But I really doubt that. I told him this is the first time I worry about Apple product. Actually, if I did not use a $50 voucher Apple sent for this order, I prefer to get a refund and wait for several weeks to see if Apple improve the quality control.

I walked into my local Apple store and grabbed a black 16gb Sprint iPhone 5 and I am very unhappy to report that I have a very large scratch in the top right corner of the phone. It is above the screen (luckily) and I don't notice it much, but when I do, it pisses me off.... I will try and take a picture of it later

Anyone think that I have any case if I went into the Apple store and told them this?? They probably wouldn't have the stock to replace the phone anyways but.....

I went to a local Apple Store today, and tried to get a replacement. He said that it would take up to two weeks to order a new one. I figured that, hopefully by then, this issue might be sorted out.

Personally, it's still not that bog of an issue to me, as my iPhone will be in a case most of the time, and it's not like I'll be staring at these tiny chips anyway.

And for what it's worth, this entire post was posted was Siri dictation on the iPhone 5. Coming from an iPhone 4, I've never been able to use this, so it's pretty neat.

Tried to get mine swapped an apple refused to help me at the apple store. Talked to Apple CORP at least 4 times today trying to get mine swapped out with little success. This maybe my last apple device due to this poor service.

Hire an attorney and serve Apple. Hey, Apple has no problem suing people. As a matter of fact you may not have to hire a lawyer, attorney may pro bono.

We get it, you are fine with the condition of your phone. Why are you still here? Enjoy your phone, and leave those who want to discuss scuffs/marks/damage alone. If going back to an Apple store to return the phones with marks is ridiculous and a waste of time, how much more ridiculous and time wasting is you continuing to argue with people?

+1 This.

Two phones for return. I am not happy.

Could somebody tell me if this affects all black iPhone 5's or is it just a bad batch of them????????????

I wouldn't say all black iPhones are affected but I would say they are susceptible. I don't know anything about this "batch" business everyone keeps mentioning but the possibility that it could happen to any black iPhone 5 is pretty certain. They are all made equally, none of us has some special, unique one-of-a-kind prototype that is immune to this issue.

Went to my Genius Bar appointment with the phone still in box, and showed the genius the scuffs. I was courteous about it, and explained that I really didn't want to be "that guy" (being: the type of OCD guy that returns iPhones 9,001 times over tiny imperfections - real or imagined - until he gets that mythical "perfect" one) but, with all the chips and nicks that my iPhone 5 had right out of the box, if there was at least a less-damaged one to be had, I'd rather have that than what I've got now. He totally agreed with me.

The good news: he had a replacement white-box model in stock, and it's flawless. That iPhone 5 is now mine.

The bad news: The genius forgot to take the nano SIM out of the phone I brought in, and white box iPhones don't come with SIMs of their own. Didn't cross my mind until I came home, turned it on and saw "NO SIM" at the top.

So, I'm still using my 4S, and still have a black anodized $800 paperweight.

I'm just hoping that AT&T store nearby has spare nano SIMs, or that guy is gonna have to fish my SIM out of the iPhone 5 reject pile.

All I know is what I read here as I don't have a scuffing problem.

And what I read here and see photos of are teeny-tiny little markings that no logical user would view as a "defect". This isn't a piece of jewelry, not a pair of eyeglasses, not a carton of eggs. It's a cellphone. They are tools that get thrown into pockets and handbags, onto car dashboards and office desks, spend time in our children's paws and through airport x-ray machines.

I can appreciate beautiful design and wanting to take care of your possessions. Pick another product, something that's not meant to be tossed around like a set of keys and I'll support what you're saying. But it's a cellphone. These things get exposed to lots of evils. The end goal is to deliver content to a touchscreen. If it fails to do that, bingo, "defective".

We're talking about microscopic markings that could easily be mistaken for dust or pocket lint, absolutely nothing to do with how it functions as a communications device. If you want to keep it clean and impress your friends, buy a unique case. Everyone's got an iPhone, no one is going to be drooling over yours if it looks like everyone else's.

All the Iphone5 in the Apple store on display must be hand picked as not a single one has a ding or scuff.

Leasing is more expensive than buying. And anyone with a 5 year note on a car? It isn't "your car" either, it's Bank Of America's. Both in the same place at the end of 3 years except I'm moving on to my next brand new car and you're stuck in an old one which you ultimately intend to sell for cash and that's what makes it the cheaper alternative to leasing. Spend some time in the BMW forums, you'll learn something.

I could buy 10 F30's for cash today if my financial adviser thought it was a smart thing to do. People with real money look at their 3 Series as the common man looks at his Accord. You look cool in your boy-racer M5 and spend 98% of your time driving it like a 328i in school zones between stop signs. I drive a beach house, three fully-paid college educations, and an early retirement.

those are the "new" and "good" batch. you will have a hard time to scratch them. LOL

sorry for those who got there phones early.

Scuffs-a-plenty

Got my White 64GB on launch day and noticed these right when I opened the box. Glad to see I'm not alone...
