Are people actually being given replacements for scuffs? I jut noticed some scuffs on the top on my phone. They weren't there when I checked an hour or two ago.

Been in an empty pocket, no case. Normal use all weekend

I just got mine replaced. I didn't notice any chips when I first got it - but that may have been because I wasn't looking for microscopic chipping. Mine had a little bit of silver showing through, and the genius happily replaced it with - I'm assuming - a new iPhone. It came in one of the Apple replacement boxes, so I'm not sure.

I went to an Apple Store today to take a look at the display phone to see how they were holding up after 3 days. Most of them actually looked pretty good for having been manhandled by 100s of people. Most of the white iPhone's bezel has so many minor scratches, that you really cannot tell it is scratched at all.

I stopped by a Verizon store today to check out the iPhone 5 since I didn't get one. The store had one black and one white one out. The black didn't have a mark on it. The white one though did have a nick on the side edge. To be honest, I'm not sure I would have even noticed it if I hadn't been looking for it. Once I did see it though, wow did it stick out!

Pretty sure all he does in this thread is troll. Every single post seems like a richboy troll.

Everytime someone explains the clear as day point that it is NOT acceptable to receive a NEW good with defects (no matter how small, a defect is a defect) he is always 'YEAH BUT ITS GONNA HAPPEN ANYWAY LOL'

The point is, it's not necessarily 'going to happen'. Why? Because it is quite possible to keep something in mint condition, if you put in the effort. Assuming it's going to happen inevitably is basically implying you can predict the future. You can't. Simple as that.

Either very stupid or a total Apple diehard.

Or both.

Edit: I'm referring to BoltJames' stupidity, not you nasa25

There are certain products that you know, from Day 1, are going to get scuffed up.

A snow shovel. Does it matter if its in "mint" condition when you purchase it, can't have a few scuffs? The moment you take your first scoop it's all over, right?

A mobile phone in its own way is like a snow shovel. It's primary function has to do with the design of its display and the quality of its connectivity. It goes in/out of your pocket. It goes into a car cupholder. It goes through airport security. You touch it with dirty hands. You place it against your sweaty face.

The iPhone 5 doesn't function any less if it has a few scuffs on it. Your friends can't see them from 10 feet away. They're inevitable anyway. So take your iPhone and enjoy it and stop crying about how it's not in a museum. This isn't a piece of jewelry. It's a cellphone.

Last time I checked, you don't buy a snow shovel for it's aesthetic value. It's a tool.

Yes a phone is also, a tool, but there's a reason phones have DESIGNS, because they're DESIGNED to look good/nice as well as function properly. High quality phones should not be coming pre-boxed with imperfections, not on this scale anyway. 1/10000000 is bad luck. This clearly not a random fluke.

Most people buy phones based on their feautures of productivity AND design. Those are both factors of a tool AND aesthetic value.

Hence why we should ALL ignore him, don't reply to his posts, and generally he will be phased out. Hopefully.

You're correct, from my observations this guy has pathological issues. He's very insecure, and wants to dominate the thread and show his arrogance and power over people he considers lower than himself. All Narcissists suffer from these self aggrandizing delusions.

Glib, superficial, controlling, arrogant, = pathological tendencies.

Ignore is the best solution in dealing with narcissism, they loathe being ignored.

Wait a minute. This is good.

I'm a narcissist but those who are consumed by microscopic chips that no one can see and don't have any impact on functionality are perfectly normal? Do you wash your hands three times before touching a doorknob? Do you sometimes see a UFO? Can you see dead people?

Would you have licked Steve Jobs butthole if given the chance?

They're not "microscopic". People are seeing them without the need for magnification devices. Aka, the human eye alone. Hence the problem.

You're an idiot.

Why? Because I've owned enough iPhones to know that scratches and scuffs are inevitable? Because 4,999,800 iPhone 5 owners are perfectly happy with a few chips that only a chipmunk can see?

An iPhone cannot resist scuffs unless its in a case. So if I understand your point correctly, you are mad that you don't have a perfect phone so that you can cover it up and not know anyway. That makes sense to you?

You are consumed with cosmetic perfection which is impossible with an iPhone.

So what's your long-term strategy then? Going to get a case, right? That'll hide any scuffs so that you can't see them, right?

Explain to me how your reaction to this situation makes any sense in that context. I might have the most damaged, most scratched iPhone 5 on the planet. But it's been in its bumper since the moment I took it out of its plastic wrap so I don't see anything and it doesn't worry me. Make sense?

Tim, is that you?

Yes, happened to my iPhone 4.

Point is, why would you care what it looks like after you're done using it? Let the next owner fret over that. You just enjoy the clean look and worry-free placement for your 2 years and that's that.

All phones get scuffed. Wishing that Apple reinvents the laws of physics isn't a realistic expectation. Don't like scuffs, get a bumper. You won't see them then. Fancy that.

BJ

So why should I lose $50 in resell value because my NEW iPhone doesn't look new? Right now my iPhone 5 is going to be free because my 4s is in such good condition that I can resell it for a higher price. Is Apple going to pay me the difference next year when I sell the 5? See why it matters even if I put it in a case? Are you starting to get it yet? I can break it down further if you need me to.

I commute to and work in Manhattan.

I've seen, guessing, 30,000 iPhones since 2008. 90% of them are in cases. The 10% that are naked are beat to hell, scratched, dented, cracked, filthy.

If you are in the 90% you have no issue.

If you are in the 10% you have no issue.

So there is no issue. Just a bunch of people whining. Which is entertaining but ultimately pointless.

DID YOU ALL SAY THE SAME ABOUT THE OTHER IPHONES? It's not the first iPhone to scuff....

So you're unhappy with your iPhone 5 because the person who uses it after you won't like scuffs on a 2 year old pocketable mobile device that he's buying used, from a stranger, on Craigslist.

Dude, if the $50 means that much to you perhaps up shouldn't be wasting $300 on the hardware and $2,400 on the service. The iPhone is a rich-man's device. They make Android for just this reason.

I pay more for my Android devices than for any iPhone I've ever had. :) Just saying.

Man, it amazes me that people are so dense as to still not get the point. The phones are shipping damaged. If you like to pay for damaged goods sold as new, then you too are adding to the decline of what is acceptable for consumer goods. No one is saying it should be bullet proof without case, but when it's scratched before removing it out of the package, it pisses people off. If it doesn't piss you off good for you, take a hike.

Anyone that got an express exchange. Did you get them to waive the $29 fee?
They wanted to charge me 29, I told them NO. Talked to manager and he waved it. Only a crazy person would pay this for a defective item or if your rich I guess. Either way not cool if you had to pay this. Btw, I'm still waiting for my replacement.

I stopped at at&t to look at one since I can't get mine until the 6th. The black version was the only one they had on display and it was in gorgeous condition, lots of fingerprints but no scuffs. I'll definitely inspect mine before I leave when I buy it, but I'm really not concerned about it. I already purchased a case as I always would.

It didn't come like that in the box though did it? Are you people stupid or something?. Even my old Sony Ericsson phone that cost me $50 didn't have scratches on when I bought it. No one should pay $700+ for a phone and expect scratches/dents/scuffs. If you do then you got more money than sense.

A "damaged" iPhone 5 has a cracked screen or a broken speaker, not some dust particles. An item whose lifestyle is akin to the set of keys jiggling in your pocket can't be held to the standard of a Ming vase.

What I'm slowly finding out in my conversations with you types today is that it's about the principle. Big-bad Apple "owes" you something because you've been "wronged". It's an invalid argument.

Actually I got the 64GB. And yes $50 is not something I am just going throw away. I pay for an extra line every month so I can upgrade every year for free after I sell the old device. I know poeple who have a lot more money that me that wouldn't take $50 and throw it in the trash so that is a terrible argument. Then the part about the android was just as bad so I'm going to let you try again. We will forget your last post and see if you can come up with something better.

You should really think before you type. Why would poeple on an Apple forum that got the first batch of the new iPhone 5 hate apple so much?

Here's something better:

$50 over 24 months is $2.08 a month.

Perhaps poor people shouldn't be buying expensive phones designed for wealthy people. Seems the only people with this issue fit that description.

Seems like there's two types of complaints on this:

1) came scuffed
2) scuffs easy

I was mainly responding to #2. As for #1, I kinda get it, it has to be pristine new. I don't understand the why a <1mm speck of a scuff makes a $700 worthless when everyone is trying to get their hands on one.

Sure If its a bad scuff/dent like some have had...sure go replace it that's why apple has great customer service. But seems like most can't accept ANY kind of nick, and abuse the service and join the complaint bandwagon.

I bought a $30k truck, I didn't return it because there was a scratch on the door handle....
