A "damaged" iPhone 5 has a cracked screen or a broken speaker, not some dust particles. An item whose lifestyle is akin to the set of keys jiggling in your pocket can't be held to the standard of a Ming vase.

What I'm slowly finding out in my conversations with you types today is that it's about the principle. Big-bad Apple "owes" you something because you've been "wronged". It's an invalid argument.

BJ

Lying to make a point only makes my point stronger. Have you looked at any of the images posted? Dust particles? Dented aluminum as well as scratches through the anodizing in no ones world equate to dust particles.

Spending $650 on any electronic device would garner such criticism especially when the main advertising focus has always been on quality.

You obviously could care less, so again, this topic doesn't apply to you or others with your mindset, and again, contributes to general decline of the standards in which consumer products are judged.

Oh my frig people will you STOP replying to BJ! This is turning into the BJ show. JUST STOP!!! You're not accomplishing anything other than feeding the troll and keeping the thread off-topic. Show some self-control and just IGNORE HIM!!!

Seems like there's two types of complaints on this:

1) came scuffed
2) scuffs easy

I was mainly responding to #2. As for #1, I kinda get it, it has to be pristine new. I don't understand the why a <1mm speck of a scuff makes a $700 worthless when everyone is trying to get their hands on one.

Sure If its a bad scuff/dent like some have had...sure go replace it that's why apple has great customer service. But seems like most can't accept ANY kind of nick, and abuse the service and join the complaint bandwagon.

I bought a $30k truck, I didn't return it because there was a scratch on the door handle....

And if you accept such things thing good for you. Move along.

I do, no need to hate on me for my wealth.

Your puppy has a crooked tail; he's defective. When are you putting him to sleep?

BJ

that isn't similar to this topic at all. It doesn't matter what you think though because as I'm sure you're aware, Apple is replacing phones without questions because they have realised there is a problem. You may have had a point with the 'there's nothing wrong' mentality if Apple had point blank refused to exchange people's phones.

You and the others like you who think there's nothing wrong with scratches/dents on New Apple products need to live in the real world. As for your 'wealth', who gives a stuff? I don't care if your Tim Cook himself. No one deserves design flaws on something they have worked hard for to purchase, especially something that costs so much.

@Takeo I'll stop replying to him now, he's a troll. Nice to see what he does for a job in his username though.

white phone with scuffs / dents / dings

My white 32 gb iPhone 5 came out of the box with a 1 inch scratch on the back and 2 dents in the bezel... went to the Apple store in Georgetown last night to replace it, felt lucky because they had a 32 GB white iPhone 5 and were happy to help. As we were setting it up we noticed a chip in the aluminum back plate and a small scratch in the bezel. They didn't have any more in stock and at this point I've been waiting to get it replaced once they have a new one in stock. This has not been a good first iPhone experience. There is no point in loading this loaner phone up with apps or my personal information since I know I will be returning it.

Ok, glad the ignore button works. I suggest everyone else do the same so we can get back to discussing the real issues here.

Besides, it's hard to argue with someone who drives a BMW, they always think they are right. But, then again, every BMW looks alike so I can see how that fits that type of personality.....boring.

And usually people who BOAST of having many things, are just internet posers.

Here's something better:

$50 over 24 months is $2.08 a month.

Perhaps poor people shouldn't be buying expensive phones designed for wealthy people. Seems the only people with this issue fit that description.

BJ

I've told you several times I upgrade every year so it's actually more like 4.08 a month. Since you are so willing to throw away 50 bucks go ahead and PayPal me $50 and ill drop it right now. Since your so wealthy that should be no problem.

I, personally, am not worried about the nick that came with my phone BNIB. But that doesn't mean that it's right. And that doesn't mean that anyone else should be ok with it.

People are well within their right to return a phone that isn't 100% flawless out of the box. That's the whole meaning of BNIB - mint, unblemished, NEW!

You have to be trolling dude.

And comparing a puppy with a crooked tail to an iPhone with a chip in the bezel? WTF is wrong with you?

No, that phone has probably seen 4+ years of severe use. The 5's will look like than in a months time. Not the same at all.

What would you like to bet? Are you just guessing? I'm betting this coating is more durable than you tin foil hat wearing guys think it is. Coming with a scratch or ding is totally different than creating one. I've hit my phones chamfered edge on my console 10 times already it there is no scratch, ding or chip.

Take your ring if you have one or keys and gently rub it along the edge and report back please.

This was a replacement for my pre-ordered week 33 phone. Much larger nicks on the bottom on that one.

I have a ring on. It's on my left hand. I hold the phone with my left hand. No scratches. Purposely rubbing hard items on a metal object to see if you can create scratches is not normal use.

It's funny, I am so paranoid I'm going to scratch this that I've been keeping it extra safe. Unfortunately, the extra precautions are just not working and it has somehow led me to drop it multiple times on a hard floor and once I accidentally dropped it on a rolling treadmill. I can't believe how lucky I am that it is still scratch-less. I guess this is staying at home till I get a case for it!

Frustrating!

I just received my replacement iPhone from Apple today and sad to say that the cosmetic flaws on this replacement are even worse than the flaws on my original iPhone 5. The funny thing is the box which the replacement iPhone came in with has a seal which says "Inspected by AppleCare". I guess quality control has really gone down on their end. I have to admit that what has been initially an exciting process turned to a very frustrating one. I called Apple support again today to report this and they offered me to go to the nearest Apple store to find a suitable replacement. I respectfully declined. I guess I've come to accept the cosmetic flaws of my original iPhone 5. I will just be sending them back the replacement that they sent me.

I have a question. My support profile already reflects the serial number of the replacement iPhone 5. Will it revert to the serial number of my original iPhone 5 when I send them back the replacement? Thanks!

I commute to and work in Manhattan.

I've seen, guessing, 30,000 iPhones since 2008. 90% of them are in cases. The 10% that are naked are beat to hell, scratched, dented, cracked, filthy.

If you are in the 90% you have no issue.

If you are in the 10% you have no issue.

So there is no issue. Just a bunch of people whining. Which is entertaining but ultimately pointless.

BJ

hm.. I have some very different stats in Toronto
70% male use their iPhones without any cases
99% females put their iPhones in a case

Anyway, It's a shame that the aluminum isn't as durable as the ones found on MacBooks; of course it's an issue, apple makes about $500 per phone, with such a high profit margin, cheaping out on something like this is simply unacceptable.

There is nothing to indicate this was apple "cheaping" out. It's a similar aluminum to a MacBook. You can easily scratch your MacBook with keys if you'd like. MacBooks aren't painted. Anodizing is the toughest way to color aluminum. It might be manufacturing defect or everyone may be expecting too much from a colored surface.

IMHO a little of both.

I'm sorry, but am I supposed to be seeing a flaw there somewhere?

You best be more worried about the quality of your maid as the dust is more noticeable than the two scuffs that are 2/100th's of the width of the micro-sim slot.

Yes, click in and take a look at the red circled area. Dust is easily wiped off, scuffs are not. Also, that is a nano-SIM slot, not a micro-SIM.

I can understand why you're not concerned about the nicks though, since you only paid $399 for a subsidized phone. You might as well be leasing your car or renting your home

The ip5 was to be my first iphone, but I rang up and cancelled my pre-order today. I placed the order well over a week before the ip5 was released and got an SMS on the night of the release telling me they had just received my order.... That's 5 or 6 business days after I placed it, and that I would receive another SMS within 4 days telling me my estimated delivery date (which is sure to be weeks from now). Then with 4 out of every 5 phones turning out to be scuffed or chipped I just thought "**** it, I'll go with the galaxy s3 instead". It's disappointing because I had been quite anti-apple for so long but finally caved and bought an iPad 3 this year and it changed my mind about apple being a ****** company until now. It seems quality control and customer service died with Steve jobs.

Well put and smart decision my friend.

All cellphones scratch.

Not all cellphones scratch within one second of opening it out of a brand new box.
