Now awaiting my iPhone 5 #2, 3 days in and around the band in the middle the annodisation has little spots where it is coming off, baring it mind it has been in a bumper since day 1. Got a White one coming this time instead of black, After Sales in the UK sorted me out.

I went to one apple store last weekend and the genius bar replacement was worse than my launch day iPhone5 so I passed. I went to the Apple store westfarms last night and the first replacement was perfect. This was for a black ATT unit. Keep trying guys, there are good ones out there.

Definitely worth trying to see if you can get a replacement. Contact Apple's helpline, visit one of their stores or call your respective carrier and arrange for a replacement.

Assuming those marks bother you, not everyone seems to mind. Apple may ask for photos so keep those ready.

Hi from Bavaria,

here it is almost the same, many many scuffs out of the box, i still wait for mine to come from t-mobile.

Perhaps they will fix this problem as soon as possible.

For me it is a big image problem for apple, they are saying, iphone5 has the same precision like swiss watches, but i can´t see this precision. Maybe apple could, but foxconn won´t.

I have also a little Video from youtube with our beloved Steve Jobs.
Very funny, until today... have a look:)

Keep in mind it may be an intern that answered. Even if he originated the comment, whisper down the lane may have gotten to it between ear and keyboard.

And on the other hand, Apple has responded in the past to customer complaints with snarky, condescending remarks such as "you're holding it wrong".

When calling into apple to replace the phone are they requiring to put a full charge of 750$ on cc and another $30 charge for the issue? The other option was to send my phone in first and then they will send out another phone?

My replacement iPhone 5 arrived today. Much better condition than the first. Pretty much spotless.

The only downside is that the yellowing to the right side of the screen is slightly stronger with this one, just a touch more noticeable.

Oh and for people who keep crying about durability, GET A NEW PHONE.

Seriously. These things are built like tanks in comparison to the last iPhone.

Want proof? I'll happily show you the chip out of my wall caused by my shiny new phone. Long story short, ran up stairs, phone cannoned out of pocket, took on wall, phone won. Infact the only way anyone would have noticed it had hit something would be the green paint that had coated one corner of the phone, which rubbed off quite easily.

Received my replacement today. No marks/scuffs/scratches. :)

I pre-ordered mine online, so didn't actually go into the store. Just rang up and told them the issue, they sent out a replacement the same day. I've still got the old phone, it's going back tomorrow.

No charges whatsoever.

Spoiler: No markings.

I'll throw my hat in here.

Finally got my black i5 last night, and it's flawless on all sides, back panel, and front glass. I will say though, I use a Kensington Car Mount (pictured below) and the way you have to snap the phone into the mount, you would think is going to lead to some major scrapes and scuffs on the edging. Not the case though. I've snapped it, carefree, into and out of this mount about 20 times by now and there's not the slightest of markings on the phone.

Did you buy AppleCare as well? I think that makes a difference (for the $30 charge).

I received my replacement for a few chips today. Nice scratch on the bottom. The bottom was the LAST place I inspected, so I was getting pretty excited about having a flawless phone until I saw this guy. Luckily, I have a direct contact for the Sr. Advisor I spoke to originally, so I emailed him my pics.

Nope, don't have Applecare. I should mention, this is in the UK. Might be different in the US.

Was this through Applecare over the phone you got your replacement? What was the process??

I just rang the main Apple customer services, explained that my iPhone had a chip out of it, and I would like to get an exchange. They sent out the new one and arranged for the old one to be picked up.

That was it really, I was on the phone for about half an hour, but despite that, it was a very easy process.

Terrible quality control. Good luck. I wish the replacements could be hand inspected, but I realize that is a time consuming process.

My replacement was hand inspected by the looks of things. Before I even took it out of the box I noticed fingerprints all over it. And yes, it was a sealed phone.

Did the original iPhone 5 come from Apple or from a carrier/carrier's store?

If you don't have apple care and they send you a replacement via Fedex or UPS they will charge you $29 unless you get them to waive the fee.

This just means, the nick/chipping scratching would have taken a lot of effort to do.. But these are out of the box...
