Just received a replacement iphone 5 from apple via ups. Either I'm being too critical or the iPhone should be shipped in perfect condition.

There is a tiny chip in the anodized coating directly in the middle of the phone on the screen side.

Theres 2 Chips and yes keep retuning that **** until you get a perfect one :)

I think Apple should have shaped it differently. If it had a small radius, rounded just enough to eliminate the thin easily damaged edge that would be a big improvement. It's as though they didn't think it through. I do believe Apple is better than this and _that_ for me is the frustrating aspect of what Apple is doing with current products.

No, the main problem is the QC issues where they're allowing nicked and scuffed iPhones to slip past QC as well as manufacturing defects such as defective anodizing coating. None of us with non-defective iPhone 5 are getting nicks through normal use, unless it's an user-inflicted damage.

Funny how my eye was drawn right to that tiny shimmering scuff so yeah that would be an exchange for me as well.

Received my Verizon 32GB iPhone 5 today. No scuffs, no scratches, no rattles, no wifi issues, no LTE issues and no yellow screen. Flawless so far. Will see how the battery life is over the next few days.

Apple Stores in Hong Kong are now warning customers prior to purchase that returns/exchanges will not be entertained for minor cosmetic issues. Goodbye :apple:.

Sure they will. Open the phone in the store. Chipped, return it and leave. Repeat the next day. They will fix this.

False alarm guys, went to SoHo store, got a new phone, went through 3 iphones before I found one without any scuffs out of the box...looks like it was just genius BS at Grand Central.

:D

I think I'm gonna go back to my 4S. I hate the feeling that if I don't totally baby this thing, it'll look totally trashed inside of a year.

Received my iPhone 5 64GB - Black with a 1mm hairline scratch on the top band. For now I'm keeping the phone since it seems like this issue varies and could be much worse.

2) as well as manufacturing defects such as defective anodizing coating.

1a) I believe that faulty QC is the root of the problem. Perhaps the phones are held by robotic clamps during the trip near the end of the assembly line, marking / chipping the coating.

2a) It has not been established as to whether it's defective anodizing or not. I did some research & found a shop that anodizes parts. They looked at my phone, & with my permission they tested an area to determine if the coating was sub standard. According to their test there was nothing wrong. They said the edges are especially vulnerable since the aluminum that's being used is rather soft.

3a) You have no data to support this claim.

At the end of the day, I don't care what's wrong. The fact is we paid Apple & it's engineers to deliver a fresh new phone to us. Period.

Toys R Us quality doesn't cut it, this is Apple we're talking about. They can do better, but also know just what they can get away with. This is simply not acceptable.

It's One Big Apple Failure.

I've gone back to my pristine, Google Maps equipped 4S. I appreciate this trouble free model more than ever.

I'll admit, I think we bought different phones. I upgraded from my launch iPhone 4 and I couldn't be happier

If the black on some people's iP5 is scratching or rubbing off just from normal wiping and the rest of us aren't scratching it through normal use, that's a strong indication of defective anodizing. Testing your non-defective black iP5 alone means nothing.

Only Apple will have data to support this claim. We can only go by observation at this point.

I agree with you as far as QC is concerned. They need to do something about the factory workers who've allowed these nicked and scuffed iPhone 5 to slip through QC under a time gun.

There were people like you who were pissed that Apple had gone all glass and made it more breakable. Only time can tell us whether non-defective iP5 are actually trouble free as far as normal wear and tear is concerned, but I bet it's no less trouble free than the original iPhone and is in fact more durable than the 4/4S in terms of drops.

The soft aluminum is lighter and was used for weight reduction. Had they used a more dense-ie. heavier aluminum nicks and chips would be much less common. I personally would prefer durability over weight savings in this application.

Your a word the starts with P and ends with Y. I already dropped my phone on cement and the thing still looks good.

Typical idiot caveman mentality. 'it doesn't happen to mine so...'. Stupid.

Just got an email that my iPhone 5 is on the way. I waited because I wanted to see feedback first. Ordered the white because of aluminum and black paint aint a good mix, but wanted to be sure Apple didn't come up with some magical paint that bonds to metal.

Looking forward to it, will be my first ever smartphone.

I just got a replacement from Apple Store. I posted a reply with pictures of the damaged one on page 145. A Genius replaced it and gave me an iPhone from a white box. I wished they gave me a retail instead... :( The iPhone from the white box was flawless but I dislike it knowing that it was not retail! I hope it doesn't have any problems now like the clicking of the glass.
