I just got a replacement from Apple Store. I posted a reply with pictures of the damaged one on page 145. A Genius replaced it and gave me an iPhone from a white box. I wished they gave me a retail instead... :( The iPhone from the white box was flawless but I dislike it knowing that it was not retail! I hope it doesn't have any problems now like the clicking of the glass.

Makes no difference. All white box replacements are new phones at this point, not refurbs. Refurbs won't show up in white boxes until after about two months.

Ugh

Have been babying this thing while I wait on my invisible shield. less than 5 days out of the box...

Will AT&T exchange this for a new one? Not happy!

How did that happen? I don't think AT&T will replace it unless it's a problem covered by warranty. Does your iPhone have any scuffs? Maybe they could replace it because of that.

Wow, that's nothing near Gorilla Glass strength. What happened>?

Did something sharp come into contact with it? If so, you're out of luck as it'll be considered an user-inflicted damage.

If not, do a scratch test with a cloth or something. Does it scratch easily? If so, it's probably a defective oleophobic coating, which has been known to happen even on past generation iPhones. See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1456428/

Did you baby this thing along with your keys and screws? That wouldn't just happen with throwing it on your pocket. I've been using my 4 with just a case to protect the back, and my front glass is flawless.

Hmm

Nothing that I can remember. I've been babying it... barely putting it in my pocket and when I do it rides solo.

I am going to go to the AT&T store tomorrow and see what they say. The AT&T rep on the phone was going to process it for me, but their stock is back ordered and I would really just swap it out in store. Fingers crossed!

I had the same iPhone 4 since they came out and never experienced any scratches like this, front or back.

Just going to go into AT&T and show them and hope for the best. Worst case scenario my invisible shield (was back ordered, that's why i was unprotected) will gloss these scratches over.

Thanks for the tip! I will give this a try...

I have a replacement coming in a couple days but for those who are sick of replacing theirs, the Sharpie Pen does WONDERS. I just tried it on a little scuff I have on mine since I'll be sending this one back anyway, and its fantastic. It's glossy at first but once it dries it looks perfect.

Oh...

So you're telling me I shouldn't carry my extra screws in the same pocket as my new iPhone?

False alarm everyone... mystery solved!

There _is_ some good news because of the chipping / scuffing issue. Giving Apple the benefit of the doubt, it can't get much worse.

Perhaps this widely publicized, highly visible problem, will cause Apple to rethink their values & quality control procedures.

I know that doesn't help us now, but I'm not going to give up just because of Apples declining attention to quality. I gave them my money, took my chances & lost. You can't win em all.

As some of us are experiencing, Apple seems to be willing to deliver mediocre quality... who knows, perhaps they're counting on us to look the other way.

Apple Stores in Hong Kong are now warning customers prior to purchase that returns/exchanges will not be entertained for minor cosmetic issues. Goodbye :apple:.

Aren't this what most companies in Asia do?

I mean from what I understand, there are even some 3rd party authorized retailers/telcos in Asia that even stated clearly on their terms & conditions that even if the iPhone/iPad arrives at the customer's hand DOA, they will not accept exchanges/refunds & the only option for the customer will be to send the item to a local authorized repair/service depot for repair...

I was shocked to learn of that as well but I may be wrong. Fellow members located in Asia, please kindly correct me if I'm wrong.

So you want them to replace a product that you've clearly damaged yourself?

Why don't I take a hammer to my TV screen and ask Amazon to replace it with a shiny new one.

Can you post a picture?

Hmmm

What the heck did you do to your phone? No way it came out of the box like that.

I wish I knew... that's why I posted on here to see if anyone else had similar problems.

Yes, it looks bad.

No, I do not remember what happened. If I did, why would I post on here? If I knew that I put it in my extra screws pocket, or tried to use it as a skateboard, I wouldn't post on here asking people for their thoughts and to see if anyone is in the same boat.

I was simply asking if anyone else was experiencing the same problem and checking to see what the policy is. Yes, these marks came with use but I don't specifically remember any particular incident, so I wanted to ask around. Why do you have to be such a tough guy?

I was simply viewing it in the same way that anyone at AT&T or Apple would.

I'm sorry if you took it personally, but unfortunately, you have very little chance of a free replacement for such significant damage.

Saying that, quite a lot of people got their iPhone 4 replaced due to shattered glass for free. It all depends on which "genius" you get, should you take it to an Apple store.

Rang AppleCare for the 3rd time and they've agreed to replace my scuffed (out of the box) iPhone 5 with a new model delivered this week.

Very happy. Fingers crossed the new one has no defect.

Went to apple store today to exchange scuffed phone out of box. They are well aware of this and I was not the only one there with this issue. They said they can show me 2 replacements and I have to choose since the replacements are defective as well. I guess they are starting to make some ground rules. In any Case they were out of stock so they ordered me one. Hopefully there will be more than one when my order comes in so I can choose.

Only Apple would attempt to lay any "ground rules" where a faulty product is concerned.

Their professionalism has decreased rapidly over the last year. They aren't far off being a shiny version of Dell.

So if Apple is so hesitant to replace a phone that is scuffed out of the box, then the chances of my getting a new one that didn't have one out of the box, but does a week and a half later is basically zero?
