I have said it in early on in this thread and will say it again: Wait till early next month, and the iPhone you will get will be scratch free (assuming you get a brand new boxed replacement, not a tech replacement from those white boxes). Apple knows about the issue and Foxconn are only *now* starting to get things under control.

I actually had my phone replaced twice, (original was a launch day one), first was a boxed brand new replacement, and second was tech replacement. all 3 had scuffs in various locations. I got a brand new replacement about 10 days ago and it doesn't have a single scuff. While not all iPhones sold now will be trouble free (since they already have been manufactured a while ago), the longer you wait to replace the phone the better.

Yeah, there are other phones too you know besides iphone. The amount of BS people are putting up with is mind boggling. Have some self respect and say b@lls to Apple.

heh heh, why are you so concern about what other people are willing to put up with? That is bizarre... May be other folks see beyond the scuffing and like Iphone? may be they decide to put a case on it and scuff is not an issue? May be they are just exercising their right to choose what they want with the money that they earn... Who are you to put them down??)

finally got them to take back my launch day iPhone 5 for a full refund. (sent an email to tim cook)

Gonna wait till next month to get the phone. No point haggling with the geniuses over issues that make me look like a weirdo.

Getting my white ip5 to replace my black tomorrow.

Note: Senior advisors or whatever they are called, can do absolutely nothing to help you. I went around in circles for 2 hours with one of these reps and they continually told me it was impossible to swap a black for white. The next day, a "Corporate Customer Care Admin" called me to follow-up and I explained my issue. Her first response was, "we can swap a black for white no problem let me get that done for you".

So, all in all they made me happy as they always do but it took a lot of posturing to get to this point.

Please let us know how you make out with this. I was trying to do the same thing, but had no luck. I was told I'd have to return mine and go with out a phone until I was able to find another. Or pay full price for the white one. I said I wanted them to order me a replacement, and I was told they don't do this. Needless to say, I was frustrated so I dropped it. Anyway, I'd still like to do this if I can.

I was given the same speech by 2 different people (senior advisor and retail.) Then I decided to try a little experiment, I asked for customer relations, these were the only people who were extremely apologetic (although the other people I talked to were nice too.) Anyways, within 15 minutes they did exactly what I asked, I have a brand new retail box iPhone 5 on it's way.

Okay, I just joined this site to help those who ordered an iPhone from Verizon and experienced damage out of the box.

I pre-ordered from Verizon's site (not Apple) and received my black 32GB iPhone on lauch day (Sept. 21st) at 9:00 AM. I noticed some minor scuffs/straight lines that show the color of the underlying metal (white-ish looking straight lines) precisely along the edge where the side band meets the chamfered edge. I wasn't too concerned though. But then I came across this thread and it brought out the OCD in me.

So in more carefully examining my phone a few days later, I noticed two nicks/chips in the chamfered edge (one top back, the other on the bottom right corner back). These bothered me more as potential weak points that could get worse over time. I also didn't like that my fingernail gets caught in these nicks, ruining the smooth feel. Frankly, I'm not 100% sure those nicks were there out of the box, as I didn't know what to look for then and in certain angles/light it is hard to see.

Not wanting to deal with a Verizon store or an Apple store (that may not have stock anyway) and have a human look at me funny over the cosmetic damage, I decided the best route would probably be to call Verizon directly.

So this morning (Sunday) I dialed *611 from my iPhone, which connects me to Verizon. After listening to the menu prompts I pressed 4, then asked to speak to a representative. About 2 minutes later a rep comes on the line.

I explained to the rep that I received an iPhone 5 that was damaged on the bezel and sides and was hoping they would ship me a replacment phone, and that I could return my current phone upon receipt of the replacment. She said no problem, she would put this in as a DOA (Dead on Arrival). [I understood from our call that the term "DOA" is key to getting a replacement shipped]. I didn't mention DOA, she did -- but another rep might not know, so keep that in mind.

So she took down my information and said the replacment phone should ship tomorrow via 2 day fedex. I will receive a tracking # when it ships (in the meantime she gave me a confirmation number). My plan is to very very carefully examine the replacment phone and if it is better cosmetically I'll do the swap. If not I'll keep my current phone, ship back the replacment, and maybe try again.

She did say they will put a temp charge on my credit card, which will be removed once they receive my phone back. We didn't discuss a restocking fee, but I see that Verizon's site lists a $37.00 restocking fee for returns. If they do charge that, I won't cry. But it didn't sound like that would be charged.

By the way, as far as the flat slate gray back (where the apple logo is), I don't see any problem with that. The problem on these phones appears to be the side band, where it meets the chamfered edge (which tends to get some discoloration) and the chamfered edge itself, which appears to be prone to nicks/chips (perhaps as part of the manufacturing process). So it is really the edges and the sides. The back itself (the flat part) does not appear to have any problems with scratching or discloration from normal use.

Just wanted to clear up confusion as to scuff-gate, as articles I read tended to focus on the slate gray back. I don't see that as a weak point. The main problem (from my phone and most of the pics in this thread) appears to be the edge of the side-band (the thing that is stainless steel on the iPhone 4S) and the chamfered edge thing.

Replacement iPhone 5 received and in service. Cosmetically the replacement is fine. I notice this one gets a little warm on the back when using a lot (the original one did not). But it does not seem to be a problem (no thermal shutdowns).

Verizon exchange was easy (no dealing with genuis's or any people giving you weird looks about cosmetic issues). They sent me a new one via fedex, with a return fedex sticker. I slapped that sticker on the box the replacement phone came in, and shipped my old phone back via the fedex office across the street from my office. I didn't even have to call Verizon to activate the new phone, as I just removed the sim card from my old phone and put it in the new phone. Restored from iCloud backup, and I'm up and running exactly as before.

Original phone was week 37. New one is week 39.

Dude, get another one while you still can. The heating problem will be worse than a cosmetic problem, especially in the long run.

Well I dispute that there is a "heating problem". I noticed the back gets warm after some use, that's all. It has not shut down or otherwise displayed any issues as a result of being warm.

My iPad 3 likewise gets warm. But I've had no issues with it.

I don't think this justifies a return, unless I see thermal shutdowns.

If your replacement heats up at all, even the slightest bit, and your original one did not, it would be a problem in my opinion. The warmer your phone gets, the faster the battery will die. It boggles my mind what people will argue over (minor scuffs/cosmetic defect) and settle for (heating up or warming up, or whatever you want to call it, its clearly a hardware issue).

My battery seems fine. I have a lightning cable at home, one in the office and USB/charging capability in my car (not to mention I own two different models of external batteries for long airplane trips, etc.). So I'm not that worried about battery life.

I'm at 82% right now, with 1 hour/33 minutes of usage and 5 hours 35 minutes on standby. That extrapolates out to about over 8 hours of actual usage, which seems to meet the specifications and published statements as to battery life on the iphone 5.

just got my black replaced, just noticed now a small scuff on the back (but none on the band) top right hand corner. It's not gonna kill me, but for $1000+ phone, would be nice to have it flawless.

Apple Store is 1hr drive from me, not looking forward to another trip.

Anyway, Apple Canada could send me another one?

I'm guessing it came from a white box, if so, what week was it?

Alright buddy, enjoy your cosmetically flawless, hardware-defective phone. Its not something I would tolerate, but clearly it doesn't bother you.

Those are not scuffs, those are dents and missing material. Whats worse is the damage was done BEFORE the anodizing coating was applied. No QC. Take it back!

Iphone 5

Week 38
So apple over the phone says they haven't heard a lot about the scuffs out of box. ???? This whole thread has been showing tons of this issue, worst quality control ever, my problem is that if u except a scuff phone and then protect it well in a case then try to sell it a year from now u wont get as much for it
