I've spent the day putting together an informational website on this problem. Thank you to the users here for sharing your experiences - I see I'm not the only one who's being particular about this.

I'll update as more information comes about; hope this helps as a consolidated resource:

The good news is the Apple store is very close. Went back after seeing the scratches. Arrived to a big line (still) but the employees walking the line walked me to the front & replaced it.

I got lucky. The new one is also scratched but not as bad. Only three on the back near the logo. All less that an inch. I've resigned myself to covering it with a case.

when Steve job was alive this things never happened. Be ready for ****** quality products from now on. If you go back to the leaked pictures of the iPhone 5 before the keynote yo will see the scuffs in the iPhone band.

Mine came out of the box with a few tiny dings in it. I don't care though because it is going to happen sooner or later. As long as the screen stays flawless that is all I care about.

when you exchanged, did you get a RETAIL box phone from apple store? or did you get the black/exchange box version?

I took my phone to the Apple store (ordered online) today because of a scuff. They gave me a phone out of a white box not much bigger than the iphone itself.

The "senior manager" was working with me. He kept apologizing and told me to come back in the store once cases started to arrive and "he'd hook me up". He assured me the "white box" phone is brand new - just in different packaging for replacement purposes. I'd imagine there really can't at this point be any true refurbs in the channel.

I don't see any scuffs on the replacement. Looks flawless. Actually afraid to look any further at it out of fear I'll find one. :)

Anyone know the best brand/type of protector? I'm thinking of just trying to find whatever the best front and back screen protector is and buying that and definitely keeping them on the phone, and perhaps using a bumper as well... Just trying to find a front and back protector that is clear and is dry placement.

To complement OCD regarding the condition of the phone, here's my gripe with the "white box" replacement: your phone's serial number, IMEI, etc. no longer match what's printed on your original box.

I think the only way I'd be happy is if I got an actual full retail exchange.

My replacement today was a new retail box, as was my replacement iPad from the day after the new iPad launch.

I seriously think everyone here, although based on first hand knowledge, under estimating this issue in a big way and here is why...

I camped for around 9 hours, number twenty ish in line and spent the evening trying to decide not only which color I like best but if I were worried about the black finish. When asked, some what suddenly, which color I chose black. It is an extremely striking piece of material and I figured it's Apple and they put the customers experience above all else.

My phone was activated in the sealed box and I left the store and made the drive home (about 45 minutes). When I got home and opened my phone I most initially noticed a chip in the plastic that sits between the glass and the metal edge and so my issues began. My phone at the antenna barriers was almost completely silver as if someone had lightly rubbed with the softest material until the black faded. Upon further inspection the small nicks on the edges were everywhere.

So I call an Apple store that is closer to me but not the one I originally purchased from and explained my situation. "Dude that is terrible luck get in here and we will get you taken care of". So I get to the Apple store and the employees helping me instantly exchange my phone and offer many apologies and if only it ended there....

The first NIN DOA phone had the same band "fading" and even more nicks. So we walk to the displays and holy moly of not everyone of the 10 black on display had an issue!!!! They were completely shocked and even started checking their personal phones for damages. Upon seeing that they had "perfect" phones they brought out the last two models they had in stock. The next one we opened faired the same and was refused by the Apple employee. The final and last 32gb black I'm the store had just ONE nick and very slight fading at the antenna gaps. I decided to take the phone and think over the situation myself.

The point is either QC is super low or these phones are near impossible to manufacture without defect. I don't think this is an OCD MacRumors issue this is a product wide manufacturing issue.

With that being said I have always loved white and black iPhones but this black iPhone is just ridiculous. It is so incredible to look at and I plan to read the AppleCare + agreement, confirm it covers cosmetic damage and enjoy my beautiful naked black iPhone until the scratches bother me enough to spend $50 for a new phone.

It is a shame to have to do this and I agree we shouldn't have to. Although I am a huge Apple fan I did just come from a Galaxy S 3 and with that being said this is the first product I have owned that is so magnificent that I feel like I can make sacrifices just to be able to have this model/ color.

#300 for flawless!! Love this phone... been carrying all day and feels like a million bucks! Sorry for everyone that got a bum one, you'll get straightened out.

I look at it as every company putting out a product will have a scrap rate. Some higher, some lower. We expect Apple to make sure each item we buy is held to impeccable standards. And for the most part they are.

Consider they estimate Apple selling 7 million phones just this weekend; even at 2% scrap rate which is insanely low in mfg, that's 14k phones with issues! It happens. :)

Really..? Where do I begin...
* White MacBooks (intel) staining and hinges cracking
* iPhone 3 and 3GS cracking in the headphone socket area
* and who can forget iPhone 4 "antenagate" issue - "you holding it wrong" was Steve's response...
Probably the only iPhone that was and still is kind of flawless is iPhone 4S - released after Steve was gone BTW;...
I'll be holding on to it until they (Apple) address "scuff" issue in iPhone 5, but I will not hold my breath... Perhaps iPhone 5S next year?

I agree...it does "bother" me a tiny bit about the box. But in the grand scheme, this phone doesn't have a scratch; the other one did and would have annoyed me more than a mis-matched box. :)

I didn't want scuffs so I got an incipio feather at the store I got my phone. Better than the incipio on my 4s.

Pre-ordered the iPhone 5 black model, but after inspecting black demo models at apple store, I saw persistent fading and light scratches on the bevel and on edges. A few hours of demo use if the iPhone 5 black will have this wear and tear issue how would it look after a month? Solution is to get a case or band protector.

I decided to get the white model, even if it scratches it will be less obvious. Even the white aluminum band is not the same metalic finish as the iPhone 4/4s.

iPhone 5 is a great phone, its just not as durable as the iPhone 4/4s body.

Just like the Ipod touch, it gets crazy scratches at the back! :D

It's far from the first Apple product with some issues (and more people come on to complain than to say it's perfect, I'd bet). That said, this one worries me. The antenna issue was just the nature of phones in general. A phone shouldn't come out of the box with scratches, especially at this price.

I'm with you on the 5S, though. I don't quite fancy putting down £600 for this.

So after me and the specialist went over my replacement with a fine tooth comb, we deem the exterior of the phone to be in flawless condition. So...I get home and find a super tiny speck of dust under the screen! I don't even care at this point. It's near the bottom right side of the phone and really is so tiny. I'm not exchanging again for fear I'll get one with scuffed exterior again. SMH.

ordered my phone through Verizon, went to the apple store, after 10 mins, walked out with a new phone with no scuffs! Idc, black one is too beautiful to swap for a white! Awesome customer service!
