I ordered from verizon and i called apple and they set up a appointment tomorrow for me with a Genius, i dont know if they will do anything, i hope so! I heard their customer service is the best! i also have a huge nick on the top right

Has anyone walked into an Apple Store for a replacement without a Genius appointment? The earliest opening for my store isn't until later tomorrow night.

I have two scuff marks on my black phone out of the box. I am just going to forget about it. Too much hassle to exchange.

I have a question!

The people whose iPhone's are scuffed or scratched. Did your guys iPhone come from china? Because I think the iPhones that were delivered from USA don't have any imperfections.

Mine came from an AT&T warehouse in Texas. Before that, it came from China. I don't see what this has to do with anything.

Does anyone know if they are replacing just the phone or if we would have to take in all the accessories? This is such a hassle... Also, the two representatives I spoke to over the phone were jerkish to me. They tried saying it probably was something I could get over, and that the phone itself should operate fine (no ****, hardware issue, not software).

iPhone 5. 16GB. AT&T. Week 36.

Just opened mines (kept it under wrap for like three hours) just now, I guess I'm another unlucky one.

Apple should really send those quality control guys a pair of glasses!!

Should I keep it? Or change it out (in a week or two)?

I really wanted to like the black one because it looks newer, but the white one looks appealing too.

Change it out in a few weeks. Seems like a lot of people are having some sort of QC problems at this point. My white has a lil blemish on the mirrored finish above the facetime camera, too. It is everywhere if you're going to 'inspect' it.

I was able to walk right in. I just talked to someone and they got a specialist for me. But they weren't able to do an exchange for a white iPhone. We went through the whole process of doing the exchange, but then had an error when he was trying to active my new white iPhone. He told me that it wasn't possible to exchange for a different color, but he could do it for the same color. So if you want to just replace it for a black one, I don't think you will have a problem.

Just switched out my black 32 gb for a white. I'm happy with the decision. Best of luck to everyone that sticks it out with the black. Maybe Apple will come through and offer some refinished side panels.

How did you go about switching your color? Did you call your carrier or Apple or what? And how long till you'll receive it?

Another out of the box blemish...

Count me for a nick in the frame right on the corner near the power button.
As soon as I tilted the phone to look at the top the light caught the bare metal and I have to admit I was disappointed.

What's more disappointing is the nearest Apple store is 2.5 hrs away......

If i replace my iphone and when i open the replacement in the apple store it has another chip or somethiing similar will they change it for me again ? What it it happens again and again 2-3 times

Since switching for a different color might be complicated I am just going to take the opportunity to upgrade from 16 GB black to 32 GB white.

Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker first time posting. I decided to create an account hoping my info can help someone out. I know everyone has been talking about the black iPhone 5, but I have some info on the white iPhone. I preordered the white iPhone and received it this morning. I opened it and noticed it had some scratches and the edges were chipped on several spots on the phone. I immediately called Apple. I got transferred to 3 different people before they could start helping me. I was told there would have to be a 3 day investigation on the claim and that they would e-mail me with more info. After the return is accepted, I would have to mail my phone back and wait 1-2 weeks to receive my replacement phone. I told Apple that I really wanted my phone today. I asked if I could exchange it at an Apple store and they said no, I would have to wait 1-2 weeks and get it through the mail.

After reading a post on this thread about someone who had gone to an Apple store to try and exchange it, I decided to try and do the same thing. The person who posted stated they had to wait in line in order to be able to exchange the phone, so I was a little worried about how long my line would be. When I got to the store there was only around 10 people in line and the line was moving fast. They seemed to have a lot of phones left. Apple employees were handing out cards with info on the phone you wanted to purchase. I went in the store told them my problem and they said it would not be a problem. Except one thing, I had purchased my phone on the Apple app store, so I would have to return my phone and wait 3 days for that money to show up on my account. I could get a new phone but I had to shell out more money (at the upgrade discount) which kinda sucks, but I really wanted my phone. I ended up just going through with it. I opened up my new phone in the store and noticed the same chips on the edges and some scratches. I showed the Apple employee and I was handed off to a Supervisor dealing with this issue. The Supervisor said they were aware of the problem and that I could try as many phones as I needed to until I found one without any defects. I opened 5 phones before I found one. They all had scratches and chips on them, and some also had staining on the white parts of the phone. This whole thing felt so ridiculous. All those phones coming out with defects. I was so happy when I found a phone without defects.

Other than the problem with some iPhone 5's having cosmetic defects coming out of the box, Apple stores have great customer service. They were very helpful at my store. By the way this was the Apple store in Valley Fair (Santa Clara, CA). Hope this helps someone out, sorry about the long post.

Bring the box with all accessories.

If you go to a Apple store an exchange will not work. Try returning it and then purchase the new color. You may need to wait a couple of days for the refund.

I had pre-ordered 3 phones 1 verizon black 16 gig, 1 att black 16 gig and 1 white att 16 gig. The white phone came no problem no issue, shipped from US. The verizon phone had a 1/4" long scratch exposing the raw aluminum where the lower bands met on the volume side and the 16 gig black iphone had discoloration extremely bad where all bands met.

I went to the local apple store after work to replace as instructed when I called apple. When I got to the store I spoke with the gentlemen in charge of the line and he brought me right into the store and got me a rep. I showed the rep the phones and he was amazed they shipped like this. After he spoke to one of the managers they said they return/repurchase both phones. I switched the phones to white but they were out of 16 gig att so I had to get 64, wife made me lol.

It took two hours working with the lead genius helping me to get the carriers to re apply the line upgrades and purchase the phones but it finally went through. For appreciation of not getting upset or mad at anyone the store manager gave us an extra charger and lightning cable for each phone. I have to say I have never seen such great customer service from a place before and commend the staff on what they are doing at Short Hills in NJ.

You can't replace the color, you can return and than re buy white.

This. An exchange has to be for the se color. You would have to return and repurchase for a different color. Also, if you bought at your carrier you have to go through the carrier and vice versa. Think about it....you can't buy something at lows and return it at Home Depot.

What about upgrades? I was told that if I returned my phone that the upgrade wouldn't be reset for a few days. Then I called another store and the specialist asked the Verizon rep about reseting the upgrade and he said that it would only take an hour if he reset the upgrade himself. But that store didn't have any more white phones...

Thanks. I'll try heading in tomorrow morning.

Went to the store tonight, was told that this is mostly an AT&T iPhone problem.

One of the customer reps said they would be happy to exchange my scuffed black phone, BUT there is an over 1 month wait since they ran out of supply.

It wouldn't bother me to have a scuff, but my blemish is more of a small DENT!

Yep, mine is scuffed too. Little bit worse then most of yours and mine was like it out of the box as well.

I decided to suck it up and deal with it, no matter how bad the OCD gets. I love the phone and now I don't have to really worry as much.. it's already scuffed :D

When I sell it for the 5S/6, deff will get a replacement before sale. Other then that, enjoy your phones boys/girls!
