Online? What, so you can get a scuffed iPhone and have no one to immediately swap? Then they can blame it on you because who knows what happened between your house and the store.

This is blowing up quick.

Essentially. The store didn't seem very willing to help. Ended up visiting another location and they were far more recognizing of the issue and did a retail swap. New unit still has a slight amount of scuffing but it's far better than the original. At this point I think I'll wait a few months.

Does anyone know if it's possible to return the damaged black in store, and then let them reprocess my upgrade, and then purchase a white one right then? Or would I be placed on some list until they receive stock?

When my black arrives this week, I'm just going right there to get a white. I'm not even going to bother with this, it's pretty ridiculous, I'm not going to use a device that can be damaged easily like this.

What about upgrades? I was told that if I returned my phone that the upgrade wouldn't be reset for a few days. Then I called another store and the specialist asked the Verizon rep about reseting the upgrade and he said that it would only take an hour if he reset the upgrade himself. But that store didn't have any more white phones...

After I returned my phone and got the new one I didn't have any problems getting the upgrade. This was a AT&T phone at the Apple store, not sure about Verizon.

Change it out in a few weeks. Seems like a lot of people are having some sort of QC problems at this point. My white has a lil blemish on the mirrored finish above the facetime camera, too. It is everywhere if you're going to 'inspect' it.

Yeah. This is the first time Apple had something like this.. I got a first-run iPad 3 but it came out pristine (I suppose I was lucky then and I wasn't following Macrumors as much at the time).

I guess it turned out into like one of those iconic "I Love Lucy" episode at the chocolate factory. When you put too much chocolates at a very high speed, quality is likely to decrease exponentially.

But what's up with the quality control though?!

Also, if I ordered from Apple.com would I still be able to exchange the iPhone at my local apple store? Or do I have to like ship it to them like what the other person mentioned on an earlier post..?

I'm still debating it hard though, as the scuff is on the back side of the phone that could probably easily be hidden with a case (and some mental therapy). Should I just get a SquareTrade warranty and exchange it out after a few years? (sides would likely to be all silver by then probably).

I dunno, my OCD is kicking in at full gear.

Update: Anyone tried coloring it over with an ink tip pen yet? Not a sharpie..

Mine's good. My friend had a scuff/dent in his. I'm going to scuff and dent mine myself due to no case. I do love it so far.

Well, honestly, that test is rather stupid. What is shown in this video is not normal daily usage - that's extreme. Every single dent, scratch etc. made in this video would only happen rarely in the lifetime of an iPhone. A test with an actual meaningful result would be if someone would take a pristine, new iPhone 5, use it without a case for a week or two and then post photographic results. What is shown in this video is just WAY over the top and not exactly a realistic scenario at all.

It may be over the top but idk man... I was in the Apple store checking the phones out today and noticed the black version already had scuffing on the sides. I mean, it was only 4 hours after release too.

I just can't believe this, come on Apple :(

Apple has had build quality issues out of Foxconn since day one. Apple and Jony Ivey know damn well the iPhone 5 is yet another flawed design, really sad, and I have had no intentions of getting one since the screen size was confirmed, now I KNOW i'll never get one. I do feel for those of you that got one.:(

I want to see someone brush the aluminum on purpose. Does anyone remember the brushed look on the iPhone 3G / 3GS on the antenna band? Maybe that will be a potential solution to this problem for people that don't want to see scratches.

when you exchanged, did you get a RETAIL box phone from apple store? or did you get the black/exchange box version?

I ordered and received a 64G black iPhone today from the online apple store. I took it back to a local apple store after seeing a scratch, a couple dents, and some hard white stuff under the up volume button. They opened up another while I was there and it was in even worse condition plus it was very grimy looking. Rather then opening more boxes to find a good one I decided to just return it and wait a few months to see if things get better. The people at the store were very friendly, understanding, and helpful so if this happens to you don't stress, they will do their best to make it right. :)

One funny thing I saw while I was there, they had an AT&T tech onsite helping with the phone setups and she was using one of the new Samsung Galaxy phones. lol

I have a very minor flaw on my Black. It's a small dent on the top right hand corner, but frankly, it's not even noticeable when you put the phone down. However, I'm definitely going to get a case on this thing ASAP.

About a dozen, yeah, nah. One guy alone opened 8 boxes in Germany with all markings.

It's not about it being a tiny flaw, it's about quality control. Get off your fan boy pedestal.

I hear another guy in the UK opened 14 and none had scuffs.

Figure in two years we will get a liquid metal design, then we wont have to worry about it getting scuffed. Until then I will just use Ghost Armor and Carbon Armor on mine.

Skin will solve the problem with out the new of a bulky case.

A skin won't cover the chamfer... which is where most of the problems are being seen.

All the demo phones in the Apple Store here in my town looked awesome to me. I didn't see any scuffing at all. One phone might have had a tiny pink prick mark but that's all.

My upgrade reset automatically and immediately. The Verizon rep at the Apple store dialed in to help get it pushed through but it went through before she even got through to someone.

Did they open retail box or black/refurb box?

You can take online orders in store

Not in Canada though as the online store only sells unlocked phones and the brick and mortar Apple Stores only sell carrier phones. So I just placed a new online order for a white phone that will arrive in a month and I'm going to ship my pre-ordered black one back for a full refund. Sucks that I have to wait a month, but I can deal.

After returning the phone, can you buy another one with contract discount?

32 GB white. Scratch on bezel right out of the box. Mark above the scratch is a reflection.

Yes, they processed the return and immediately sold me a new one with the discount. They said Verizon doesn't allow direct exchanges and they had to process as a return and new purchase, but my upgrade immediately went back on the account and they were able to do the discount again right away.
