Got my balck iPhone yesterday from Apple store. I was there about 1pm and only five people were in the line.

Out of the box the iPhone had scratch and marks on the back.
So, I went back and ask for a replacement. The new replacement had some marks on the back out of the box as well!!

I wanted to exchange it with a white one but it was out of stock.:(

I think you'll be very lucky if you get black on perfect condition.

Isn't painted black aluminum what we asked for?

Im not telling people not to complain, but isn't painted black aluminum exactly what we asked for?

I've felt for years that the MacBook design was getting played out and that they should come out with a black aluminum one. Same goes for the iPad and even the iPhone. But now that Apple is FINALLY giving us the choice we want then the complaints are rolling out.

I have a few dings in my black iPhone but I'm not going to bother replacing it because in a month it will have 10x more scuffs and in 2 years I wont even own this anymore. So I think its a shame if Apple decides to avoid black metal for future generation products because I'd gladly take a rough and scuffed black Macbook Air over the same old boring naked aluminum.

I'm not saying anybody is misreprenting but I really find it hard to believe that 40% of people are getting scuffed black iPhones right out of the box.

the point is that people shouldn't have to settle for a sub-standard product when they are paying premium prices.

Here's my scratch:

The other white marks are just dust/lint.

My one plastic antennae spacer is also warped a bit :/

Pisses me off cause the screen is awesome, now I risk getting a bad screen with the replacement.

These scratches are sad too see but expected from just a simple anodising. I'll be getting the 5s when my contract is ready. May have to get a white one.

I get that part and in no way am I defending Apple because at the profit margins they make on these things then everyone has the right to complain if they were expecting a flawless product. BUT, isn't this exactly what we asked for? This isn't a car or a dining table where you can put several clear coats to protect the finish, this is a phone that touts "thin" as a feature so all these problems were expected.

They could have added a layer of protective coating if they knew wear was going to be an issue. But nothing can prevent some of these scratches....

Black vs White iPhone 5 unboxing.
Watch the HD version and jump to 7:30 to 7:33 to see what appears to be another scuffgate case.

This is helpful because you see it in a video instead of in a photo. Also, the guy unboxing it doesn't seem to notice the mark so he doesn't focus on it. However, you can clearly see it when you know what you're looking for.

I'm sure any perfect Black i5 will get these marks over time, so I don't think I'll be too worried about it unless it's super critical, just saying.

Clear mark from 7:30 to 7:33. Watch in HD.

Anyone that had this problem with a Verizon pre-order online have success easily exchanging it in store? it seems like most posts I read dealing with Verizon, they aren't being very helpful with the customers. Scuffgate is even on the news, I don't see how they can accuse everyone of dropping their phones.

Appointment today with the Apple store at 2:30 pm. What are the odds of getting a white model if I wanted to based on these images? These by the way are all around the front. None of these images are duplicates of the same area.

Antenna-gate was a totally overblown non issue. This is not. These phones are going to look like ass after a month or two of use.

I can't get an appointment for a while .. but i need to use my phone ... I have 2 or 3 wee dinks around the side (one particularly noticeable)

Can I go in and just ask to exchange it because I'm not happy with the quality .. and I'd like a white one instead (oo I dunno the black is sooo nice but if it's gonna have problems)

I'm not too phased about nicks on my white phone, but if it's true that a certain batch has these defects, I'd want an exchange as who knows what other quality issues might arise. So ... I just submitted a support ticket to Apple so that I can call them later (just so they won't accuse me of causing the nicks) and will wait to see how 'scuffgate' plays out.

Can you post some pictures of your white scuffs please?

A skin won't cover the chamfer... which is where most of the problems are being seen.

All the demo phones in the Apple Store here in my town looked awesome to me. I didn't see any scuffing at all. One phone might have had a tiny pink prick mark but that's all.

Full body Skin?

Apple blames UPS?

Small chip on my black 32gb near power button.
Talked to Apple Care this morning and they said that they will file this as "Damaged in transit". I disagreed and said that the shipping box looked fine along with the actual phone box but they replied with "This will be the fastest way to get you a new phone".
They apologized 10 times.
No phones will be shipped this weekend so I have to wait for an email that explains the receive and ship back process next week.

I still want the black as I do think it is quite bad a$$ murdered out.

I see it as the exact opposite. Antenna-gate took my signal from 5 bars to 1 bar with the palm of my hand. Here we are talking about very very minor cosmetic blemishes that would likely have developed after a week or two of regular use anyways... Don't get me wrong, I'm not downplaying some of you issues...but it's not bigger than the fiasco two years ago that drastically affected every single iPhone shipped...

ordered my phone through Verizon, went to the apple store, after 10 mins, walked out with a new phone with no scuffs! Idc, black one is too beautiful to swap for a white! Awesome customer service!

myditka, you were able to swap for a brand new in box 5 even though you ordered from Verizon?

just got off the phone with Apple Canada and the rep seemed kind of oblivious to the issue but offered me some options like genius bar etc (no freebies). She told me to check with my carrier first and then go from there. At the very least now I have a case opened with Apple about the problem if there is ever any discrepancy with the condition of my phone if I need to bring it in. Apple needs to figure out whats going on and fix it
